TWO KULAKS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE
WIT AM* HUMOR.
A little girl described *
“ thing that’s tail all up to the head. ’
Twelve hundred and fifty dollars
made the ancient “ talent.’’ It takes
some talents to make $1,250 nowa
days.
The difference between a country
and a city greenhorn is, that one would
like to know everything, and the other
thinks he can tell him.
A western paper, alluding to the
statue of Shakespeare in the Central
park, nays: “ That’s right; such talent
as William’s ought to be encourag
ed.”
A middle-sized boy, writing a com
position ou “Extremes,” remarked
that we should endeavor to avoid ex
tremes, especially those of wasps and
bees.
A lady with two marriageable
daughters informed a gentleman that
one was a “ blue-net” and the other
was a “ bronze.’’
Two African slaves with their faces
much tattooed, driving with long reins
a pair of ostriches, are among the
present sensations of Paris.
A Fort Wayne man who has invent
ed anew recipe for cleansing clothes,
parades it on his advertisements under
the standing head of “ Every Man His
Own Washerwoman.’’
The following notice is.posted con
spicuously :n a newspaper office out
west: “ Shut the door; and as soon as
you have done talking business serve
your mouth the same way.’’
An elderly maiden lady, hearing for
the first lime that matches are made
in hesveu, declared that she didu’t
care a straw how soon she lift this
sinful world for a better land.
A smart young articled clerk, hear
ing it stated by a lecturer that “ man
was merely a machine,” remarked,
“ Then I suppose an attorney may be
said to be a suing machine.”
“ Arthur,’’ said a good-natured fath
er to his “ young hopeful,’’ “ I did not
kuow till to-day that you had been
whipped lust week.” “ Didn’t you,
pa?’’ replied hopeful, “I knew it at
the time.’’
“ If there i* anybody under the can
ister of Heaven that I have in utter
excrescence,” says Mrs. Partington,
“ it is the slanderer going about like a
boy constructor circulating his calo
mel upon honest folks.”
Wasn’t it rough ou Clara, just as
she was telling Frederick at lunch how
ethcrcu! her nppetite was, to have the
cook bawl out: “ Say ! will you have
yer biled pork und beans now, or wait
till yer feller’s goueY”
Two sisters in a Prussian town lov
ed the s rue unfortunate man. They
were practical people, and decided that
they had rather halve him than mo
nopolize anybody else, they captured
the youth and started for Utah.
An exchange describes the manner
of love-making practiced among some
of its readers, in the following para
graph: “Thoyouug people who were
seen feeding each other dove fashion,
over a gate-post, the other evening,
had better be a little more cautious in
the future.”
A story of Theodore Hook is told by
Cornelius O’Dowd, in one of his es
says, to the effect that at some civic
banquet, ou the appearance of a fifth
course of dainties, Hook laid down
his knife and fork and declared that he
would “ take the rest out in money.”
The idea, O’Dowd declares, was “ em
inently British.”
We perceive in a daily paper an ad
vertisement which iuforms tho public
that board for the summer can be ob
tained at a “ large und shady brick
gentleman’s residence in the country.”
We should think that this offer would
be very attractive to persons who want
to live with such a man.
A little girl, daughter of a ftlergy
niau, being left one duy to “ tend
door,” and obeying a summons of the
bell, she found a gentleman on the
steps who wished to see her father.
“ Father isn’t in,” she said, *• but if
it's anything about your soul I can at
tend to you. I know the whole plan
of salvation.”
When a stranger treats me with
want of respect,’’ said a poor philoso
pher, " I comfort myself with the re
flection that it is not myself that he
slights, but my old and shabby hat
and cloak, which, to say the truth,
have no particular claim to adoration.
So, if my hat and cloak choose to fret
about it, let them; but it is nothing to
me.’’
“ Madam,” said a boarder to a land
lady, “ I am very sure that pepper is
half peas.” “ Peas !’’ cried the lady,
bridling up—“ peas, indeed ! You
don't know anything about pepper,
sir, if you think there is peas iu that.”
” For all that, madam,’ said the boar
der, “ I’m sure that pepper is half peas.
P-e-p pep, p-e-r per—six letters, and
three of them pst.’’
A friend says the income tax is
nothing, the poor rates are nothing,
•ompared with the wife's rates and
taxes. She actually “ taxed” him one
Bight (the curtuins being drawn), with
being “ far too attentive, Sir,” at the
party, to that forward Miss Prettigal,
and “ rated” him soundly accordingly.
We fear the poor fellow has no “ ap
peal,” except ‘‘ a peal” of laughter
from his bachelor friends.
Maine husbands come a cruel dodge
on their faithful, if too talkative, wives.
He tells his wife he is going to Ausan
auquatausogowmougotongo, fishing,
and in his absenco has his friends call
at the house and inquire his where
abouts. Wbeu he returns the poor
woman is exhausted, and doesn’t speak
again for a month.

which is due to merit alone. We
can assure our old patrons that it is
kept fully up to its liitrH standard;
and it is the only reliable and | erfeet

oe Faded Hair to its youthful color,
making it soft, lustrous, and silken.
The scalp, by its use, becomes white
and clean. It removes all eruptions
and dandruff and, by its tonic prop

out, as it stimulates and nourishes
the hair-glands. By its use, the hair
grows thicker and stronger. In
baldness, it restores the capillary
glands to their normal vigor, and
will create anew growth, except in
extreme old age. It is the most eco

as it requires fewer applications,
and gives the hair a splendid, glossy

excellent purgative.
Being purely vege

no mercury or mine

serious sickness and
ed by fheir timely
use; and every family should have them on hand
for their protection "and relief, when required.
Long experience has proved them to be the saf
est, surest, and best or aU the PiUa with which
the market abounds. By their occasional use,
the blood is purified, the corruptions of the sys
tem expelled, obstructions removed, and the
whole machinery of life restored to its healthy
activity. Internal organs which become clogged
and sluggish are cleansed by Ayer’s Pills, and
stimulated into action. Thus incipient disease
is changed into health, the value of which change,
when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enjoy
it, can hardly be computed. Their sugar coating
makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their
virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so
that they are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable.
Although searching, they are mild, and operate
without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or
occupation.
Full directions are given on the wrapper to
each box, how to use them as a Family Physic,
and for the following complaints, which these
Pills rapidly cure: —
For Ilyspepila or Indigestion, IMstlcm
ur-*s, Languor and I.osa of Appetite, they
should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom
ach, and restore its healthy tone and action.
For Liver Complaint and its various symp
toms, Hiliou, Headache. Mick Head
ache, Jaundice or (Ireen Micknean, Hil
iou* Colic and JBiliou, Fevers, they should
be judiciously taken for each case, to correct the
diseased action or remove the obstructions which
cause it.
For Bysenterr or Diarrhoea, but one
mild dose is generally required.
For Rheuinutinm, Gout, Gravel, Pal
pitation of tile Heart, Pain in the
hide, Hack and Coin*, they should lie contin
uously taken, as required, to change the diseased
action of the system. With such change those
complaints disappear.
For Dropsy and Dropsical Swellings,
they should be taken in large and frequent doses
to produce the efTect of a drastic purge.
For Suppression, a large dose should be
taken, as it produces the desired effect by sym
pathy.
Asa Dinner Pill, take one or two Pills to
promote digestion and relieve the stomach.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels, restores the appetite, and invigorates the
system. Hence it is often advantageous where
no serious derangement exists. One who feels
tolerably well, often finds that a dose of these
J’ills makes him feel decidedly better, from their
cleansing and renovating effect on the digestive
apparatus.
