SONG FO REVERYIiO DY.
The following is the latest, which
contains a moral worthy the consid
eration of every business man:
There is a man in our town,
Who does not advertise;
Good customers go past his door,
The cheery cash likewise.
And when he posts his books at night
He’s the saddest man in town,
And ever and anon he moans,
‘‘The place is going down!”
If all the men were like this man
We’d feel no great surprise
If all this town’s inhabitants
Were shoveled to the skies.
For towns must grow*and trade increase
Ily nerve and enterprise,
And they who’d live must have the pluck
To risk and advertise.

Not since the flood, that we know of, has
our section of country been so abundantly sup
plied with water as of late. Every furrow has
been a branch, and every branch a creek, and
every creek a river, and every river a sea. Our
basements and cellars have been converted in
to cisterns, and some of our streets into navi'
gable streams. The cars on our railroads have
been water-bound, ferry-boats have taken ship
ping to parts unknown, and bridges have been
loosed from their moorings, and fences and
water-gaps gone glimmering.
The streets of the city of Rome, our neighbor,
were navigated by boats, during the present re
ceding freshet.
Persons coming to Cartersvillo to trade,
should go at once to Howard & Ramsaur’s and
thus 6ave time and money. janlOtf.
The cars on the Cherokee railroad reached
our city on Monday night last, after a deten
tion of several days by high water.
For several days past the schedule of the W.
& A. R. R. has been “look out for the train
when the whistle blows.” High waters the
cause.
’Zekicl’s Story, on the first page of this pa
per, is exactly in time to meet the experience
of many of our freshet-scared readers.
We learn that the Hon. J. W. H. Underwood
has been appointed Judge of the Romo circuit.
Indisputable.— That Howard & Ramsaur’s
is the cheapest House in town. Those who
trade there can’t beliovc any othc way. janlGtf
Miss Maggie Kennedy, 15 years of age, who
was raised in tills county, daughter of Mr. T.
11. and Mrs. Frances Kennedy, died of typhoid
fever, in Atlanta, on Friday last, and her re
mains were brought to this place on Saturday,
and her funeral was preached, by Rev. Dr.
J clton, at the M. E. Church ou Sunday even
ing, after which her remains were followed to
the city cemetery, by a large concourse of sor
rowing friends, and there deposited in the
grave, to await tho resurrection morn. In the
spring-time of her life she has been called a
way from the embraces of doting parents and
cherished associations, we trust, to the beauti
ful home of the blessed in the skies, where her
laith has ended in sight and her hope in
glorious fruition.
Our aged friend and former follow-citizen,

DANGEROUS.
Railroading and railway traveling
are rather hazardous these times, and
those who can remain at home would
do well to do so, until the earth be
comes firmer and the roads are re
paired.
What has become of our soap men
and their factory ? The contemplat

wash us so thoroughly and so cheap
ly, seems to have vanished like a
bubble in the air.

Because such a policy is calculated to
make a man poor, and puts him in a
position which makes it easy for him
to fall into bankruptcy. Therefore,
if you don’t want to be lean, and at
the same time to lean towards abject
poverty, pay as you go and give no

VALENTINES.
The friends who sent us their bea
tiful colored pictures, on St. Valen
tine’s Day, are assured of our high
appreciation of the favors, for they
certainly favor those who sent them
very much, especially the one with
the long ears, and also the knight of
the spade and the quill.
DOGS.
The canine race is a great nuisance
in many ways and in many in
stances. A few dogs are good in
their places, which are the yards of
their owners. They have no honest
business away from home, and if
they happen to get in the way of
passing bullets or take a little strych
nine while roving about in quest of
mischief, no one should complain at
their fate.
COLD AND WET.
Thus far, the present winter has
been one of unusual severity, and a
greater amount of rain has fallen per
haps than was ever known before
within the same length of time. We
have passed through a stormy time
since November, and the unprece
dented floods have caused great dam
age to farms and farming interests.
We predict that a dry spring and
summer will follow the rainy season,
and farmers should “ take due notice
thereoi and govern themselves accor
dingly” by plowing deep.
BARS.
Why is a liquor shop called a bar f
Because it is a place of barter. Mon
ey, health, food, raiment, soul and
body are bartered for whiskey and
rum. It is an effectual barrier to
everything that is good. It debars
those who frequent it from all the
pure enjoyments of this life, makes
homo desolate and barren of com
forts, and those who buy the contents
of its barrels always make bad bar
gains. People of Bartow 1 avoid
that which is a bar to your progress
in the ways of prosperity and happi
ness.
TO OUR FRIENDS IN CHERO
KEE.
Providence permitting, we will be
at Canton Court-week, at which time
we will be glad to meet and receipt
those who owe for our paper, and
also those who may wish to subscribe.
In the future we expect to spare no
pains to make the Standard & Ex
press especially interesting to our
friends in Cherokee county by giving
them all the current news in other
sections, and by publishing from time
to time everything of interest that is
transpiring in their midst, such as
matters relating to crops, schools,
churches, mining operations, and
railroad enterprises. Help us,
friends, and we will give you all the
assistance we can in developing your
resources, and in promoting your
welfare and prosperity.
THAT WALESCA CORN.
Our esteemed friend Sharp writes
iu this week’s paper to satisfy us
about that one hundred and four
bushels of corn, gathered by Tom
Smith last year from one acre of
ground. We have to say, in reply,
that we are still by no means satis
fied. We want more Information.
We want the modus operandi of mak
ing so much corn on so small a piece
of ground. We want to know if the
land was set up on one edge, and
both sides cultivated, or was but one
side cultivated ? Was it planted in
hills, drills, or sown broadcast; and
lastly, though not leastly, was there
any guano used, and if so, how much ?
We always did admire our friend
Gus’ firmness. He is one of those
men who, when he says that a horse
is sixteen feet high, stands to it. H«
seems to be a little “ riled,” however,
because we insinuated that some
body had imposed upon his credu-lie
ty, and that the report in regard to
Tom Smith’s corn was most lie-kly
an exageration. He intimates, too,
that he had thought of sending us a
challenge, but had concluded that he
had better not do it. In that he
beautifully illustrates the maxim of
Sir John FalstafT, which declares
that “ discretion is the better part of
valor.” We have now a proposition
to submit, which we think will ad
just the matter amicably and satis
factorily to all parties, and that is,
that if Tom Smith will make 104
bushels of corn on one acre this year,
we will “ acknowledge the corn” and
be satisfied.

Why Endure What is Cnrablc?
“Whatcan’t be cured mnst be endured,”
says the proverb; but indigestion can be cured,
and therefore it is the merest stupidity to en
dure it. Dyspeptics have certainly a right to
continue dyspeptics to the end of their days if
they choose, but as it is not supposed that any
rational being prefers physical torment to ease
and health, the probability is that if all suffer
ers from indigestion were convinced that an
absolute, infallible remedy for their complaint
existed, they would with one accord resort to
it. We most emphatically declare that such a
remedy does exist, and that its name is Hostet
ter’s Stomach Bitters. The record of its suc
cess extends over a period of more than twen
ty years, and it is fearlessly alleged that during
the whole of that time it has never failed to af
ford permanent relief in any disorder or de
rangement of the stomach that was not organic,
malignant and incurable. The testimonials
that go to establish this important fact can be
counted by the thousand. Stomach complaints
that had been aggravated by a total disregard
of all dietary rules, and intensified and render
ed chronic by medicinal treatment or drastic
purgation, have in hundreds of instances been
cured within three months by the systematic
use of this celebrated stomachic and alterative.
It should be remembered that weakness of the
digestive organs involves many other ailments.
Biliousness, headache, nervous debility, palpi
tation of the heart, spasms, rush of blood to the
