Too long the Southern people have been content
to took to Northern periodicals for instruction in
agricultural matters, ami to Northern literary pa
pers for mental recreation. There is, however, a
growing spirit of .Independence and of self reli
iiam ont too SouiU. Oar people aro awaking to
the com iction that we have the elements of suc
cc.sm in the experience, knowledge, and scientific
investigation, of the dwellers in our own South
ern homes. The truth is gleaming upon us, that
w* have literary re.Murcrs of <ur own worthy to
bo fostered—that among Southern writers should
i> divided somuportion of that vast stream of
Southern money that Hows perpetually northward
to sustain northern literatuie.
My aim is to establish a paper that will be a
vehicle of information useful to Southern Plan
ters and Farmers, and a repository of Southern
thought, imagination,and taste, in the realm? of
Literature and Art; and to obtain for it .such an
extent of patronag-and success as will justify
the moat liberal compensation to all its contribu
tor?. Able and experienced Editor* are engaged
and steps are in progress to secure contributions
from the must plua?iug Southern writers of both
sexes. Much latent talent will be brought to I
light, ami furnish some agreeable surprises to j
Southern people.
