December 17 th, 165 U. w2t TO THB MEB-CHANTS OF THE KOI Til A; MM TIHVIM . Wk. the undersigned, importers and Jobbers In tbe City of Charleston, iu view of the present excited state of the country, deem it proper to bring to the notiee of the interior Merchants the Haims we have to their patronage and custom. — The majority of us have teen long catablUbed in business, and from our experience arc well acquainted with the wants of this section of coun try. All of us hold sentiments in common on the agitating question of the day—slavery ; and all of us .Icsire, as far as practicable, to become com mercially independent of the North. We have no desire to underrate the energy and enterprise of the Merchants of Northern cities, hut we claim to bo able to supply good* in our respective lines on a* favorable terms, both as to price and credit, as the merchants of any city in the Union. We have facilities for obtaining goods from Kurope net, surpassed by any, and our importations from abroad are very largo, notwithstanding the re ports lo tbe contrary, circulated fc* (fa* who hnv® no knowledge of what they affirm, or whose rot srest prompt them to mislead. American-goods we obtain from tbe manufac turers oo af favorable terms as any Jobbing Merchant* of tire Northern cities. Why then should we not be able to sell ou as favorable terms as others? We are able and determined to do an. and all we ask of you is, to try this market, lay aside tbe prejudice—for it is only • prejudice—that your customers prefer goods from New York to those from Charleston, and build up and encour age your own Seaports and your own Merchant*. If we cannot do what we profess, you will be subjected to very little inconvenience, far oppor tunities of leaving by railway or steamer are of fered every twelve Lours. •Jur Sticks will be complete by tbe Ist of Feb ruary next, and it remain* tube seen how many of those who have heretofore purchased ail their go.nls in Northern cities will give Charleston a trial this fiprir.g.
