It is remarkable what a poor opinion some
people at the North affect to hav© of the milita
ry proweal of tho South. That, too, in the face
f stubborn fauts, which bliould enlighten their
prejudiced minds. They ridicule vhe idea of the
South e -ntending with thorn, or even having suf
ficient spirit to throw down tho g ige of war. We
do not wish to fight for tho mere sako of proving
to an unwilling people the kiud of mat rial of
which wo are mado. Wo abhor suoh an idea,
uid will only tuke up arms u 9 the last resort.—
I’ouco is our policy—but Ihe North should ro
mumber, with nil its gasconade, that the South
ham curried on every wnr—the Revolution, the
war of IS 12 uud Die Mexican war. She give
uii'ii who led in tlieso struggles and signalised
our battle# by tho must brilliant triumphs. It is
the boas of Massachusetts that she contributed
the men who fought tho revolution. True, tbo
oontest was upon her *>wn soil, and Bunker Hill
stand* as a monument to our defeat and a Brit
ish victory, but Virginia contributed the men.—
Massachusetts parades her muster roll of 82,20(5
soldiers, who enlisted in the Revolution aud whose
descendants received pensions. She boasts of
this uud proclaims it to tho world. But how
standa the case ? V irginia gave 32,128, and her
men enlisted for three yeare. Iho soldiers from
Massachusetts only enlisted for sue mouth* nnd
hud a now muster roll always at the end of that
period. She hud six muster rolls during the three
years that Virginia had one. And while it actu
ally appear* that she contributed twice as many
troops us Virginia, h did not. hav© but a frac
tion over one-third at any time during tho war.
This is iriihmotic nnd exposes tho patriotism of
Massachusetts during the revolution. The fig
ures show that tho South contributed tho men of
this war, and her soil drank up the blood of her
brave.
In the war of 1812, the North furnished 68,562
soldiers, who enlisted for three months. ‘Jh#
South gave ’.10,182; a majority of 68,601 in favor
of Ihe South. How stood th® States ? Massachu
setts gave only 3,110, while New Hampshire gave
SU7, Connecticut 387, Rhode Island 637, Ver
mont 131—in all 6,162 less than little South
Carolina, which -furnished 6,600. The States
which furnished most men who served in that
war were, Virginia 39,017, Now York 38,638,
Tennessee 24,858. In the two wars Iho troops
employed iu thu urmic* of the republic numbered
424,000 uion, of whom the Sout h furnished 287,000
—more than douhl© th© number of the North,
which was only 137,000.
fn tho Mexican war the Northern State* gave
23.061 men, while the slavubolding States gave
46,630—nearly double. She gave the heroes too,
in tho battles. This ought to satisfy Die North;
especially when the comparison instituted as to
th© valor of Dio two sections is complimentary to
the South. Then wo will tot boast, neither
will wo dtHparngo the patriotism of the Yankee*,
but when our courage aod heroic spirit arc ques
tioned, w© will point to history for our laurels, a*
Cornelia pointed to her children for her jewels.

Heretofore 1 have said uolbiug about tho town

called, ur© generally fishermen, and supply the

Yard to Durations. At present, nearly ©very
houso bus been converted into a “grocery” or

Two ©r three prices ar© charged for everything,
oven pipes ami tobacco, and the people seem de
termined to make a good thing out of the sol

whiskey” und other things of like nature are ex

higher her® than in Columbus, and those who
autiuipated a good time in euting them, hav®
been sadly disappointed. Ido think that the*©
shop keeper* and flsb-uiongcrs are leagued to
swindle the Alabamians in an audacious man
ner. The buildings in Warrington, with the ex
ception of those belonging to the Government,
are low und miserable, and owing to the sand
which lies accumulated in the street, are some
distance below the side walk. To a stranger the
