“011 LIFT,”
From (Uwn to dark they *tooi
That long midsummer's Jay f
White fierce and l'a*t
The battle blast
Swept rank on rank away
From dawn to dark, they fought
With legion* f*wept and cleft,
While black and wide,
The battle-tide
Poured ever on “our Left
They cloeed each ghastly gap !
They dressed each shattered rank
They knew, how well
That Freedom fell
With that exhausted flank
“Oh ! for a thousand men,
Like these who molt away
And down they came,
With steel and flame.
Four ihoutand to the fray
They left the laggard train ,
The panting atcaiu might stay
And down they came,
With steel and flame.
Head-foremost to the fray !
Right through the blackest cloud
Their lightning path they cleft f
Freedom and Fame,
With triumph came
To our Immortal Left.
Ye ! of your living, sure
Ye! of your dead, bereft .’
Honor the brave
Who died to save

From the Richmond Dispatch.
Tnfir Affair,
The Dispatch contained yesterday an account
of the shooting of Capt. Charles ii. Axon of
Company “M,” Ist Regiment South Carolina
Volunteers, on Tuesday evening, near Wilson,
N. C. t on the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad,
by Arthur lb Davis of the 2d tieorgia Regiment,
then en route for this city. The perpetrator of
the act was put under | guard for conveyance to
this city and trial by martial law.
The tircumstanou* attending the death of
Capt. Aston, excited a feeling of hitter mdigna
lion against Davis, although no attempt at re
taliation was indulged in prior to the arrival of
the Petersburg tram on Wednesday evening.
When they reached the depot in this oily, lour
South Carolina Voinnteera approached the car
in which the prisoner wax confined under guard,
and expressed an Intention of shooting him.—
Finding them determined, the superintendent of
the road, (Thus. H. Wynn, £q,,) ordered the
<*ar containing the prisoner and guard (two men
armed with muskets; to bo backed to the Man
cheater fide of the river. This wan .lone, and
the four who had made the demonstration, being
told that Davis would be carried across the river
to the camp near the reservoir, left in the latter
direction It appears I.owevor that there were
othera present hentontbe same errand of veng*
sauce. The bridge guard says five or six nol
diera passed him and would not bo repulsed
when be ordered them to return. The result of
sending Davis across the bridge, in company
with two men as guard ignorant of their duty, is
fouud in the following narrative furnished us by
member of the regiment Pi (which ho was at
tached. Our informant says:
Davis, upon arriving in Richmond, was l©rt by
Batts in care of a guard of tlio Telfair
Volunteers, Capt. Smith. Jlo ordered the car
to be backed acroM*tho river, and proceeded to
camp to report to Col. 3emines. Very shortly
afterwards a party of men supposed to belong to
Capt. Alton's .company, came and asked him
from the guard, promising on the faith of gen
tlemen, that he should be delivered to the prop
authorities Assured by them, ho followed
them. Ou the road they attempted to borrow a
rope. When they got to a ravine they halted,
and told him they wore going to hang him. lie
protected against it, and said that they bad
pledged their faith to linn. One stepped in front
of him saying “faith bod -d; lam going to
shoot you.” and upon that shot him. Davi* then
turned to escape; they rushed upon him, and cut
at him with bowie-knives, inflicting several
wounds. Davis fell, partially insensible. Again
while on the ground, they inflicted u wound
with a knife in the neck, and one on tho bond.
Supposing hiui dead, they lurried to leave, when
uQe of them asked if they bad belter not ccnd
for a doctor. Ho was answered by one who raid
“No; if bo is not dead let's finish him;'’ ami np
proaebitig him, fired at him within a few feet.
The ball did not take eflect. He now lion crili
©ally ill at the residence of Dr. F. E. Locket of
Manchester. The ball which may prove fatal,
passed between the first rib and clavicle, and
glancing downwards imbedded Itself in the deep
tissues of the back under tLo shoulder blade,
from wbonceit was removed yesterday morning
The knife wounds, though \try bad aro notin
themselves fatal.
Three more men returned after the affair and
inquired if lie was dead, and on being told no,
but mortally wounded, laughed and went ufl.
before being removed to Dr. Luc butt’s house,
Davis, supposing himself dying, aikcd permis
sion to make a declaration before the proper au
thorities. He was taken to the town Hall, and
his evidence stands recorded by a magistrate.
The circumstances of the shooting and stab
hing are gathered from Mr. Davis’ statement’

Tnit Captork op Ely.—The Montgomery
Confederation has the following from a reliable
source:
At half past three o'clock tho .-t impede be
came fearful, and the gloom among Wilson A Cos.
was awful. They immediately jumped into their
carriages and put for Washington at a rapid rate.
The Hon. Mr. Ely, with u friend, catching the
contagion, and believing the enemy to bo near at
baud, jumped into a buggy and pushed forward
to Washington at a “double quick.” Three mil.
from Centerville, the starting point, the buggy
broke down, and its content -, were left a prey to
our forces. Ely heard at this moment the “ter
rible” tramping of cavalry, and jumped behind
tree to tecreto himself, while his friend put to
the woods and was seen no more. Presently i
horseman dashed n,unJ seeing n man behind i
tree, loudly called out, “Who are you. r “
*‘Mr. Ely,” answered the man immediately.
“Well, who in tho h—II is Mr. Ely,” said tho
horseman. “Mr. Ely, member of Congress from
the Rochester District, New York,” said the man.
“The h—4l you say ; say that over again old fel

said the man. “Well,” said the horseman. “I*ll
