The Washington .‘-inr aay|
A serious and tragical affair occurred latt
Monday night at the temporary encampment
of the Fifth Connecticut. During the turmoil
of pitching tents and preparing supper in the
midst of a terrific storm, an unprincipled spec
ulator smuggled a hogshead of liquor into the
lines, and before detected by the oillorr*,
enough of hi* poisonous compound had been
dispensed to create the greatest disturbance.
Baring the reign of its influence an affray oc
curred, in which one uttixefi was killed, two or
three wounded, and several horses and < ttje
shot. On the facta transpiring, Gun. Hanks it
Sued an order for all Ihu liquor found within
the limits of our pickets to be destroyed, and
those found selling it to be arreted.
To-rley art indHtidue) racNsilsd in conceal
ing a barrel in the woods, and supplied it t*
passing soldier* near Gait bora burg. Adjutant
J*tone sad Surgeon Dnnen, of the Nineteenth.
New York, ferreted lain out nnd handed him
over to tho.car of Provost Marshal Stone.—
JHvillainolttbeverage was destroyed on the
spot.
How ran in* Aiotv woti.ii Beach.-- Know
ing pretty nesr how many men there aro lit re,
also the number of batteries and squadrons of
cavalry and the number of wagons needed to
transport the camp equipage and supplies, 1
have calculated Ifto i which would be
occupied by this army on a !</> ( erh. i
have noticed how much apace is taken up by
troopa, by wagons, by cavalry and artillery,
that your rcndcars might obtain a comparative
estimate. Men marching in flies an* usually
• Utile more than three feet apart ; horses,
whether in cavalry or artillery, need twelve
feet; a wagon in a tram with four horses oc
cupies fifty feet. Now, if the army of the Po
mac was in line, nfovingon a narrow country
road, with cavalry tear abreast, end men in
files of four, accompanied by all the wagons
and mnbuinnee* and ammunition trains, it
would reach from Boston to Hartford—not far
from one hundred nnd fifty miles'—Hash. Cot.
