HII ALPINE CROSS.
MY JAMES T. MtLVfi.
Benighted one© wboro Alpine .storms
Have buried boats of martial form*,
Halting with fear, benumbed with cold.
While swift the avalanche* rolled,
Shouted our guide, with quivering breath,
u The path i* lout lo mure ie death !'*
The savage enow-cliff* seemed to frown,
The bowling winds come fiercer down;
Shrouded in such h dinnal scene,
No mortal aid whereon to lean,
Think you what music it was to hear,
” ! the Crwm —w y uuy • cVar /”
We looked, nri,*J there amid the snows,
A simple cross of wood arose;
Kirin in the tempest's awful wrath
It stood, to guide the traveler s path,
And point to where the valley lies.
Serene beneath the summer ekies,
One dear companion of that night
lias passed away from mortal sight;
He raached hi* home to droop and fade,
And sleep within his native glade;
Hut as his tluttering baud 1 took,
Before be gave his farewell look,
lie whispered from his bed of pain,
“ The Alpine 6Vw* J ire again /”
Then, smiling, sank to endleni rest
Upon hb weeping mother's breast.”
