Farm and Household.
Starting Sweet Potatoes.
Sweet potatoes are started in a
moderate hot-bed or forcing-pit.—
When but a moderate number of
plants are wanted, make a bed of fresh
horse manure twelve inches thick and
two feet wide, and longer than the
frame to be used. Then cover with
three inches ol old rotten manure, put
the frame in its place, and spread in
it two inches of very light, sandy soil;
rake level, and place the tubers very
close together over the surface. Small
tubers may be used whole; the large
ones should be cut once lengthwise,
and the cut side laid down. Fine soil
is then sprinkled over and between
the seed, to the depth of an inch. Put
the ashes on at once, and keep the
bed rather wet. There is little danger
of keeping the bed too warm as long
as sprouts have not started. After
these appear above ground the bed
has to be filled up again with two or
three inches of fine soil or mould.—
When the sprouts have pierced throngh
this layer, plenty of air has to be given
dining the warm days to make strong
and thrifty plants. In about five or
six weeks from starting, the sprouts
are large enough to be separated from
the tubers, and lit to bo planted out.
After this is done other sprouts will
start, which can be pulled in a week or
ten days. In this way three or four
crops are raised from tho same tubers.
When ashes are not at band, and the
plants are not wanted early, frames
covered with muslin may be used in
stead, and the whole covered with
boards in cold nights. The young
plants are very sensitive to cold, and
should, therefore, not bo planted out
before all danger from cold weather is
over.
Let every farmer who has boys pro
vide them a workshop, or work bench,
where the boys may gratify their long
ing for tools, and satisfy their restless
activity for something to do. It 4ff)nld
bo made pleasant, attractive and com
fortable. If there is room enough,
there should be a work bench and vise,
a few files, and perhaps a small lathe,
two or three planes, augers of different
sizes, a few chisels, knife, saw and
hammer. For those who cannot af
ford tho whole, a part will answer, and
to those who can, other tools might be
added. The cost of tho whole would
be but a trifle compared with the ad
vantages gained. A young man who
at any time can mend sofas, chairs,
rockers, harness or tinware, set the
clock, repair an umbrella, and do a
hundred other small jobs, will get
through tho world far more comforta
bly and thriftily than one who is con
stantly obliged to depend on the help
of others. Besides all this, great is
the moral influence of tools in furnish
ing boys something cheerful to do in
leisure hours.
The love that survives the tomb is
the noblest attribute of the soul If it
has woes, it has likewise delights; and
when the overwhelming burst of grief
is lulled into the gentle tear of recol-
TectuSu, then uio sudden anguish and
convulsive agony over the present ruin
of all we most loved, are softened into
pensive meditation of all that it was
in the days of its loveliness. Who
would root such a sorrow from the
heart? Though it may sometimes
throw a passing cloud over tho bright
hour of gayety.or spread a deeper sad
ness over the hours of gloom, yet who
would exchange it for the song of rev
elry ? No; there is a voice from the
tomb sweeter than song; there is a
remembrance of the dead to which we
turn, even from the charm of the
living.
The Rhode Island doctors recently
took cognizance of the tribulations of
school children in tho public schools,
and iu a set of resolutions very sensi
bly declared that scholars iu the pub
lic schools should not maintain the
same position more than half an hour
at a time; that no child should be ad
mitted to the schools, as now conduct
ed, under seven years of age; that un
der twelve years of age, three hours a
day, is sufficiently long confinement,
and over twelve, four hours is enough;
that study out of school should not us
ually be permitted; and that all incen
tives to emulation should be used cau
tiously, especially with girls.
A few hints about what is fashion
able, are always in order. Black silk
street dresses are as fashionable now
as they have been for several years
past. Shirring is the ornament worn
now for trimming the waist, sleeves
and overskirts. It is very stylish. In
kid gloves, the plain, uutrimmed ones,
without ornamental stitching, and
long enough to require from four to
eight or even ten buttons, are consid
ered in the best taste. Ladies win
generally appear in the streets with
somo kind of an outside garment worn
over the corsage. The shapes are
very numerous, but they are all quite
small.
A gentleman who has just returned
from the Snake river country, says
that the present condition of the stock
up there, would hardly indicate that
they have just passed through a hard
winter. He says that the hills and
plains aro covered with fine grass knee
high, and that the cattle are looking
well and getting fat—those that are
not already so. The Snake river
country is the champion stock range
alter all, and we doubt if its superior,
oither iu summer or winter, can be
found.
The following remedy is given for
blight in pear trees:
To half a bushel of lime add four
pounds of sulphur, slake to the con
sistency of whitewash, and, when it is
applied, add to each gallon of the
wash half an ounce of carbolic acid.—
Apply this to the diseased part, and
where the bark is diseased, remove
the outer covering before makin g the
application.
The embryo grasshopper is having a
hard time iu Minnesota. The severe
winter has frozen up the myriads of
eggs laid last summer and the power
to germinate has been lost. As Mrs.
Stowe makes one of her negro charac
ters say, “It’s an ill wind that blows
mwlmr.”
