The growth and cultivation of wool ; has been an employment of man. and taxed the skill and sagacity of the, agriculturist from time immemorial, j It is one of the highest and noblest occupations of man. Shepherds, and ; the keeping of sheep. nr- mentioned ! oftener in holy writ titan any other j occupation. Yea, the greatest event; that, ever happen, and or. this oarlli was! first made known to shepherds. ‘While j shepherds watched over their docks by J night, the angel of the Lord came down I and glory shone around There is no animal kept on the farm more profitable than sheep. Ttiis con- j sists, first, in increase; second, wool; thiid, flesh. They will live where no other domestic animal can, and are more peaceable, requiring less watch ing to keep them witiiin bounds than nnv other animals. There is no other country on the face <>i the globe better ndaoted to keeping sheep than Ameli na, and perhaps none where it is so little understood. Tin re is no domes tic animal so much neglect, ,1 as the sheep. Most people, even those, who write on the proper care of sheep, do not appreciate t lie importance , t keep ing them dry. Sheep have a natural aversion to standing in the mud or water. They wtli even sntl r hunger rather than venture into a muddy or filthy barnyard. This is not a matter of fancy, for sheep soon become dis eased when compelled to occupy damp, muddy or filthy quarters. Sheep give back to the farm more in proportion to what they take off than any other animals; therefore their ad vantages are not appreciated by a ma jority of the fanners. Sin ep are espe cially adapted by their j eculiar habits to render important service. They are pioneers of the plow, cl,‘fining up lanO that lias been giv n nj> to weeds and briers, cleaning in k! ', and while doing ho they will thrive so that their sides will stand out with fatness, or they will scale the rough hilts ami glean fo and where the implements of tin- hu-band man are useless. invariably leave a pasture belter for having been kept in it. An old sue* p pasture tLtd can be plowed may be looked upon as but one step from a full granary. Oat Meal ns Food. This health-giving food becoming increasingly popular, and ;s , xtensive ly maimftictuu and and pul tq> in barrels of one hundred and liiuet> -six pound* and shij ped to nil purts. After boiling full on -i our, turn the porridge into a turret and set to par tially cool, when i: is s. i \vd cither in milk, sweetened on inn, or with sugo spr nkled on. The Scotch formeilv cooked their meal but a elicit time, and by so no iiifjf, found it an irritant, and I hat they were fast becoming ad •. sj>“;:tic people lienee they cooked it n. much longer time, when tliu men! becomes thor ouglily mucillMgiiH'u- as will be st.en by the porridge wlu n cold, us it will then quiver like inli,. and when so thoroughly cooked, lx comes decid idy anti-dyspeptic. The best meal is the coarse, approx imating to cracked wheat, and light colored. The liue arid brown coloic-d is liable, or.might be adulterated with shorts. Oatmeal, eggs and grapes, are con sidered the greases! blood producing foods we have. Tr\ i\ and the more you use the popular dkli of porridge for breakfast, the more- \ou will like it. Lika oysters and tomatoes, some have to learn to like them If stung or bitten by insert, snak or animal, apply spoils of hartshorn very freely with a i-mt rag, because it is one of the strongest of alkalis, and is familiar to most persons. The. .sub stance which causes the so-called poison from bites or stings is, as far as a; certaiued, generally acid, ileum the hartshorn antagonizes it in pro portion to the promptitude with whirl, it is applied. If no build, orn is it hand, pour a cup of hot water on : cup of cooking soda or saleratns, is even the ashes of wood just from th< j stove or fire-place, because these xv. \ strong alkalis, and hartshorn i>, on! i best because it is the strong.- -t. This i all that is necessary, as the odor "f tin cedar keeps away 1 ce. The n tntdy is cheap, simple, and effective, and is well worth trying by all who have lu-ns u care for. Old orchards, bv shallow plo - h . and dressing with manure and asite ! may be given anew lease of life him productiveness. New growth of vv,>o will be stimulated, and cousidcrabh profit will be realized in letiuu of fruit. Storms in North America. An important memoir on tho laws ol American st -nns was recently pre s<-Lted by Professor Loomis, of Yale Col ege, fo the National Academy of , Sen nee, ami lias iately been published in a revised edition. The conclusions arrival! at by Professor Loomis were derived from an examination of the United States weather-maps, as issued from tile Army Signal-office. Among the results attained by him, bo states that the greatest daily velocity with which storm centers move along the -.u tii’s surface is found in February, the j lowest iu August. The average direction |of the storm paths is more northerly jin October than in July. Very rarely do storms travel in a west or north west direction. Among the disturb ! ing causa s affecting the direction of the movement of a storm center, be states that there must be a connection be tween it and the fall of rain (as has been established by many other nves tigators), and finds with reference to American storms, as > n exact result, the following general law: that the av erage velocity of the storm progress is j about thirty nine miles per hour wh, n ti e extent of rain area is GOO miles in advance of the storm, but its velocity is fourteen miles per hour when the ruin area extends JoO miles in advance of tiie storm. The average course cf the storm paths coincides very closely with the axis of the area over which rain falls during the preceding eight hour*; the stronger the wind on the west side of the storm, the less is the velocity of the storm progress. At the Light of GOOO fe t, in ti e western qu idraut of a storm, the velocity of the wind is more than double the rate of the storm’s prog ess. The i obaresin closing the stum’s c uter in more than half the cases examined by him were 1 plica), the major axes l e ng half as long -gain as the mi lor axes. In a •uiaji number cf storms the major mss w s sit least four times the minor f'he longer axis most frequently lies n a direction bearing about forty de crees east. Teaching Children Courage. Courage is a vital element of Chris tian chivalry. Without it, indeed aeithci truth nor fidelity to prpmise can tie hoped for. The coward is sure to 1:0 when truth means punishment, xnd sure to rt treat from his engage ments when they involve peril We need valiant touis that have learned to eadur an ! scorn pain, and to face danger f. ariessly and promptly when duty require--. Some parents evade tins vital part of training by glosses and in c-- pi ion, A mother who has taken her liny to the d< foist’,S to get a tooth out, will often say, if ha is shrinking, \S t still, niy boy, it wont urf ton Now she knows it will hurt m, lut think* if she can only ge on !>y this derive lu ait spill aud I©'. h<- u. Mu.o get hold of tiie tooth, then ms liiM'Oii ry of the pain will not liin h r it. ; txtraetiou. This is a double •nist ike. It destroys her boy’s conli- Me in her, for he detects her in a i<>. And though it get the boy this tine, to sit nt, li, it is under tho dilu tion shut there is to he no pain, where :s he should he taught to face the pain aud to scorn ii. This makes the ii' renee ! eiwei n the cowards and ■ ■ot s. A regiment of poliroony could iiatcii up to i battery as cheerfully a? • refotrii lit of heroes, if they thought here was no enemy at the guns. The difference is that heroes know the danger and yet face it valiantly. The plague is once more threatening the confims of Europe. The progress of tli pestilence last year in the valley of tt e L .w*-r Euphrates aroused some linn, and the contagion some weeks ago lx gun to spiead to Mesopotamia, •md since the beginning of March it has r, ached Bagdad. The new out break shows much of the old aid mys teiicns fierceneis before which medi cal science for many centuries recoiled in despair. There is no reason to ex pect that its ravages will be limited to the provinces of Turkt-y in Asia. Both in Egypt and in European Turkey the conditions in which the plague breeds ami spreads are still prevailing wi h little mitigation since the time when Cairo aid Constant!! ople were almost itm.uuily dec-in.ated by its stacks. Hap pily, there is not the least ground for believing that the essential conditions for its reproduction in Western Eu rope ary longer exist. Of the peculiar customs of the Greenlanders, the most singular is their musical combat If a Greenland er imagines himself to be insulted by another, he composes a satirical poem and challenges his adversary to sing. Both appear with a respectable chorus, chi' 11 women, and the contest of wit begins. He who fairly laughs out liis opponent, and gets the last word, ' gains the applause and wins the day. Amost admirable substitute for the i code duello! Nature did not intend tint man should i eed a stimulant, oc springs and wells would bubble with whisky Blood is sufficient to warm his bod., and pure water sufficient to invigorate j his system. Therefore, whin man drinks, he puts that iu his mouth hat will steal away his brains. If you want to bo unreasonable, ill-tempered, imbecile, then till your hide with poisonous liquor, and you will suc ceed. Curran was orce asked by one of his brother i-onnselors, ‘Do you see any thing ridiculous iu this w g'? ‘Nothing but the head,’ was the reply. LEGAL nD V EitTISEME NTS. HALS. COUNTY.
