FARM AS 1 ifo I si'HOLD.j
The Keeping f Sheep.
The growth and cultivation of wool ;
has been an employment of man. and
taxed the skill and sagacity of the,
agriculturist from time immemorial, j
It is one of the highest and noblest
occupations of man. Shepherds, and ;
the keeping of sheep. nr- mentioned !
oftener in holy writ titan any other j
occupation. Yea, the greatest event;
that, ever happen, and or. this oarlli was!
first made known to shepherds. ‘While j
shepherds watched over their docks by J
night, the angel of the Lord came down I
and glory shone around
There is no animal kept on the farm
more profitable than sheep. Ttiis con- j
sists, first, in increase; second, wool;
thiid, flesh. They will live where no
other domestic animal can, and are
more peaceable, requiring less watch
ing to keep them witiiin bounds than
nnv other animals. There is no other
country on the face <>i the globe better
ndaoted to keeping sheep than Ameli
na, and perhaps none where it is so
little understood. Tin re is no domes
tic animal so much neglect, ,1 as the
sheep. Most people, even those, who
write on the proper care of sheep, do
not appreciate t lie importance , t keep
ing them dry. Sheep have a natural
aversion to standing in the mud or
water. They wtli even sntl r hunger
rather than venture into a muddy or
filthy barnyard. This is not a matter
of fancy, for sheep soon become dis
eased when compelled to occupy damp,
muddy or filthy quarters.
Sheep give back to the farm more in
proportion to what they take off than
any other animals; therefore their ad
vantages are not appreciated by a ma
jority of the fanners. Sin ep are espe
cially adapted by their j eculiar habits
to render important service. They are
pioneers of the plow, cl,‘fining up lanO
that lias been giv n nj> to weeds and
briers, cleaning in k! ', and while doing
ho they will thrive so that their sides
will stand out with fatness, or they will
scale the rough hilts ami glean fo and
where the implements of tin- hu-band
man are useless. invariably
leave a pasture belter for having been
kept in it. An old sue* p pasture tLtd

but one step from a full granary.

If stung or bitten by insert, snak

very freely with a i-mt rag, because it
is one of the strongest of alkalis, and
is familiar to most persons. The. .sub

poison from bites or stings is, as far
as a; certaiued, generally acid, ileum

Storms in North America.
An important memoir on tho laws
ol American st -nns was recently pre
s<-Lted by Professor Loomis, of Yale
Col ege, fo the National Academy of ,
Sen nee, ami lias iately been published
in a revised edition. The conclusions
arrival! at by Professor Loomis were
derived from an examination of the
United States weather-maps, as issued
from tile Army Signal-office. Among
the results attained by him, bo states
that the greatest daily velocity with
which storm centers move along the
-.u tii’s surface is found in February, the
j lowest iu August. The average direction
|of the storm paths is more northerly
jin October than in July. Very rarely
do storms travel in a west or north
west direction. Among the disturb
! ing causa s affecting the direction of the
movement of a storm center, be states
that there must be a connection be
tween it and the fall of rain (as has
been established by many other nves
tigators), and finds with reference to
American storms, as > n exact result,
the following general law: that the av
erage velocity of the storm progress is
j about thirty nine miles per hour wh, n
ti e extent of rain area is GOO miles in
advance of the storm, but its velocity
is fourteen miles per hour when the
ruin area extends JoO miles in advance
of tiie storm. The average course cf
the storm paths coincides very closely
with the axis of the area over which
rain falls during the preceding eight
hour*; the stronger the wind on the
west side of the storm, the less is the
velocity of the storm progress. At the
Light of GOOO fe t, in ti e western
qu idraut of a storm, the velocity of the
wind is more than double the rate of
the storm’s prog ess. The i obaresin
closing the stum’s c uter in more than
half the cases examined by him were
1 plica), the major axes l e ng half as
long -gain as the mi lor axes. In a
•uiaji number cf storms the major
mss w s sit least four times the minor
f'he longer axis most frequently lies
n a direction bearing about forty de
crees east.
Teaching Children Courage.

The plague is once more threatening
the confims of Europe. The progress
of tli pestilence last year in the valley
of tt e L .w*-r Euphrates aroused some
linn, and the contagion some weeks
ago lx gun to spiead to Mesopotamia,
•md since the beginning of March it
has r, ached Bagdad. The new out

in despair. There is no reason to ex
pect that its ravages will be limited to
the provinces of Turkt-y in Asia. Both
in Egypt and in European Turkey the
conditions in which the plague breeds
ami spreads are still prevailing wi h
little mitigation since the time when
Cairo aid Constant!! ople were almost

Of the peculiar customs of the
