'X' II E EA ( I-< Un published Entry I'Vuifij Morning. FARM AND HOUSE HOD P- Helling d> Uaru. Tliere is a constant buying and sell ing (*f farms going on from year to year in our country. This restlcsrmow on the part of the farmer, and the de aire to change a present location foi auother, one hundred miles oil, is so frequently witnessed in our day tluii we coaße to wonder at it In the turn of our forefathers, when a man \vas settled on a farm he commonly contin ued thro’ life and then left it for his non. In times gone by the same laim was first occupied by the granulathei. and so on by the son ami grandson Thou the good old homestead wa i* verenced, ami the occupancy esteemed a privilege. There was a satisfaction felt by the successor that his pri de cesser was his relative, cultivated die same fields, wandered by the same brooks, traversed (be same bids and ate of the fruit of the same orchard. Then there was a borne feeling, home association, and borne attachments. Now the farmer looks more to his pe enuiary gains, and when ofiered a large price for his laud, liesitaies not to sell, lie quits his beautilul home, bis well cultivated acres, and emigrates to the far West, and commences a life of hardship that lm never dreamed oh It can lo safely said that where one man succeeds in this undertaking many fail. If lie could only sell his new farm, how gladly would he hi< bauk to the old home, now ’occupied by strangers, and the enclosure con taining the graves of his kindred ing to ruin. With the many will dispvfflg (.roubles inoidoul a | loluo j n a new country. Our advice is to remain where you are; if you are comfortably off, bo content to remain so; do not exchange a certainty for an uncer tainty, unless powerful reasons are brought to bear upon you to seek a new settlement in a distant region. Stick to the old farm, for it lias never failed you in tho time of need. The Suushitae of Sickness, Severe illness is a groat teacher. It comes unbidden and unwelcome. Its stay is often prolonged, as if it were uot au unsolicited visitor. At first wo I’oel impatient, mid sub mit with a very bad grace to the en forced confinement; we think that bui;- inosM cannot bo neglected; that people must be soon; that not one of the nu merous things can go on watt witnoiu, us. JJnt this original impression soon wears away. Wo perceive that the great machinery of the world moves steadily on without our help, and oven without so much as noticing our ub Renee. Our anxiety about many mat tors steadily diminishes, until, after a while, wo wonder at the intensity of the interest, which we once fell, ie sub jtiots, which wo have cmne to regard as of very little importance. Wo grow philosophical The days 80ftm longer because wo have attained a calm, patient, reflective mood; but they also have become pleasanter. Pain, if we suffer it, we have become accustomed to; and may be wo feel .> new veneration for science <>u account of the relief which medical knowledge has afforded us. Li the morning low er’s wo confine our thoughts within doors, where all iH cheerful. It is Urn sunshine, which ou a bright afternoon streams in at the windows of the still sick-chamber,which awakens the great est flood ol recollections. \V ■ go back to our childhood aud schooldays. We think of those of whom, perchance, we have not thought for years before. Uuf bow fresh and distinct ts our remem brance of them now! When we proceed to relied, what has become of them, and where I,hey are now, our thoughts wander over many lands, but limy rest mostly upon the ehurelivi irds. It is to those that one after another -it seems, as wo summon them in memory, as if it were nearly all -of our youthful com panions aro gono. And yet it seems but yesterday, that we were playmates together. We become sensible that iu reality human life is indeed but .. mere span ! Education lor (.Sit INukooi-. 11l onlof to give tile young ;l lliut o' ivl l fit might be loaruotl, teacher.s ought to devote a few hours each week to touching bcioiitilic education, ospcci ally such an volutes to agriculture. Short weekly botanical and geological excursions ought to bo made to th* country by the whole school, intev esting geological and ethnological specimens are lying around on h\on farm in this country. Every school house should contain a cabinet of scion tilic curiosities Thcso could bo col lected without any expense. Tiic cab inots would cxeito the curiosity of tlit scholars to know more about these sub jeds. Teachers that cannot teach any more than what they liud in sehoo 1 books are not qualified to teach. This qualtication ought to 10. required of every oue. The moral effect of teach ing science in our common schools would be to direct the minds of the youug from immoral enjoyments. Con stant employment and a scientific ed ucation ate among the best mor, timers that exist. To the end that wo may know what tiny mo doing in this di rection m other countries, 1 wilt hero state what the Germans have done to popularize scientific agricultural edu ction. In the first place, Prussia has four higher agricultural academies, with eighty paid professors; forty-one lesser colleges, all connected with model farms; five special schools for the cultivation of meadows, and for tue scientific study of irrigation; one spe cial school for the reclamation of swamp lands; two special schools for industri al agriculture; one school for horse shoeing; one school for silk and bee raising and pisciculture; twenty agri- cultural stations (laboratories) for ex perimeets and for garden culture; three higher colleges, and twelve sec ondary schools iu which the culture of Ihe drape-vine is made a specialty. All i.heso schools are connected with mod ■l farms for tlm practical education oi students. One contains two thousand h.ur hundred and fifty acres of farm ing hind, and fourteen thousand seven hundred acres of forests. Bavaria, with live millions of people, has twenty-six agricultural colleges, and two hundred and sixty nine associations for the ad vancement of scientific agricultural knowledge. Today the tier man em -I(iic contains one hundred and eighty four agricultural colleges, five for hor ticulture, seventy-iivo practical middle schools for garden culture, sixteen col leges for special branches, and besides an immense number of larger and smaller associations, evening schools lor the further education of farmers youths, led, tiro courses, etc. -(Dr. v 1 iftli. (iirat I'niik Agriculture. The farmer who stint™ as lie who as unwise, am 1 . eaitl(S ~ ill no is diminishing the ability of a faithful servant to bo useful to him. The farmer who obtains from a field not properly fertilized ton bushels of grain, when by manuring ho might have obtained twenty, is selling his la bor at half its value. He who does not give back to his fields as much as he takes from them, sells their fertility iu his crop and the fertility of the soil is the farmer’s cap ital. The farmer who will keep those truths iu view, and act in accordance with the rules they suggest, will find his compensation in tho incteasiug products of his farm, in the augmen tation of his wealth, and in the promo tion of general prosperity. When properly cooked, eggs aio dune evenly through liko any other food. This result may bo attained by putting Ilio eggs into a disli with a ' 1 r—V 1 -r „ upon them boiling water, two quarts or more to a dozen eggs aud cover and set them away from the stove for fifteen uuuutes. The heat of the water cooks the eggs slowly and evenly and sufficiently aud to a jelly like consis tency, leaving the centre or yolk har der than the white, and Liie egg tastes as much richer ami nicer as a fresh egg is nicer than a stale egg, and no person will want to eat them boiled au,i t having tried this method mice. T,.0 following recipe for choked enti tle should bo printed at least twice every year, as it is a sure remedy: i’ake of fine (lilt cllewilly tebaCCO enough to make a ball as large as a hen’s egg, dampen it with molasses so it adheres closely; elevate the animal’s head, pull out tLie tongue and crowd the ball as I,u- down the throat as pos- sible. In fifteen miim'es it will cause sickness and vomiting, relaxing the muscles, so tli.it the potato or whatev er may be choking it will Lie thrown up. Che cause ol streaked butter is tho imperfect working of the butter after and. is salted. Salt in butler sets the color, or deepens, or brighten it, so that if the salt is worked into the but ter, and not so fully worked as to salt eveiy part, then tho fresh butter re turns the color it had when it came from the churn, aud tho salt butter grows so much darker that, if, is decid rally streaked. The remedy is to work the streaked butter more thoroughly. Should you catch cold in the head aud have your nose stopped up no that you can scarcely breathe except through tho mouth, go straightway for a teaspoonful of fiue, pulverized white sugar, aud snuff as much as you can; or take a pinch of it and press it into the nostiils; after which hold tho head Lnick so that it can pen etrate through the air passage. L’res ently it will be entirely free and you can breatn as well as evor. The consumption of eggs in the manufacture of calicos is almost incred ible. No albumen is equal to- that contained in an egg—and it would consume the lay of 300,000 hens to supply mm of the large calico mami r.olorio : iu France. A hog should never bo fattened for food without being fed on charcoal to purify the meat. It. is asserted that with plenty ot salt and charcoal, hogs would never be affected with cholera and traehium. Newly-set grafts should be inspect ed a couple of weeks after setting, in order to repair any cracking or open ing in the wax. Wherever there is a crack or opening it should be care fully waxed over, it will do no harm to look alter the grafts the whole of Mar. legal advertisements. lIA UIL COUNTY. lia.ll Dtpnty SUcriiTi salts.
