Chestnut Mountain Academy.
Editors Eagle: On the morning of
the 13th iust. we left Gainesville for
Chestnut Mountain Academy. After
a ride of eleven miles over a good
ridge road, we arrived about ten
o’clock upon the grounds. Avery
large concourse of people had gath
ered to witness the annual examina
tion of Prof. Sewell’s school, which
was UDon our arrival already in prog
ress. AVe witnessed the examination
of several classes, all of which ac
quitted themselves very creditably
indeed, and evinced a degree of skill
calculated to relloct great honor upon
their teacher as an instructor of
youth. At eleven o’clock Col. J. B.
Estes delivered a very plain prac
tical address upon the subject of
“Lyeful Education.” The address
was replete with wise suggestions
ami good hits, and gave universal
satisfaction to the audience. At the
dose of the address tlio school
formed in procession, and, led by
Prof. Hobbs’ string band, inarched
around, making a very pretty dis
play. At the proper time they filed
along each side of the tablo which
had been provided, and which liter
ally groaned under its load of good
things. Everybody was invited to
jat, everybody did eat, everybody
Kid plenty to eat, and yet there were
L U P °f the fragments many bas

In no possible shape can the sub
ject of stock-breeding be looked at,
and the fact that thorough breeding
is the most profitable not become ap
parent. If it cost any more to raise a
thoroughbred animal than it does a
common one, there might be some
excuso for refusing to improve tho
common stock of the country; but it
does not. The first cosl is some
what greater; but how very quickly
the profits reduce that. The Live
Stock' Journal recently illustrated the
matter as follows:
“A farmer in this country who is
mipposed to own as good common
sheep as anybody, sheared his flock,
and after weighing the fleeces, found
that each sheep averaged two and a
half pounds. Take tho whole num
ber of sheep in this State, and they
probably will not average more than
the above. Say tho wool ii worth
twenty cents per pound, tho pro
ceeds from each sheep will ba fifty
cents. Take now an estimate of
fieeces of the thoroughbred Merino
and Cotswold, which will not aver
ts 0 less than eight pounds per head,
proceeds on each sheep is SI.OO,

plentifully with salt and pepper;
have a teacupful or more—according
to the quantity of tomatoes—of flue
cracker crumbs, and spread over
the top. Bako in a quick oven from
thirty to forty-five minutes. Drop a
few lumps of butter on to tho toma
toes and serve.
. Housekeepers sometimes wish to
give silver a little brightening with
out going through all the ceremonies
of a formal cleaning, and this can be
easily managed by the use of a silver
cloth. Take two ounces of powdered
hartshorn and boil it in a pint of wa
ter. Dip small squares of cloth in
the liquid and hang them uo to dry
without wringing.
Professor Laxenby', “after numer
ous experiments and very careful
trials, commends tho following us
safe, cheap and effective applica
tions” for the cabbage worm—using
either two or three times during the
season: 1. A pound of whale-oil soap
in about six gallons of water. 2- A
low quarts of tar in a barrel of water.
I' or some sorts of vegetables, as
lettuce, cress, radishes and onious,
the Chinese system of keeping the
s.)il continuously wet is the best that
can be adopted. It produces a crisp
iuoss in the vegetables that is obtain
ed on’ywhen there has been no check
in the growth.
Cows should not be kept over eight
years old and ewes over five. Now
is the time of year to determine what
disposition is to be made of old
stock, whether to be prepared for the
butcher or continue as at present for
auother year.
i the report of the Pennsylvania
Fruit Growers there is reference to
Maiden Blush and Greening apples

in the ground, and kept, the former
till April, the latter till June.

DR. C. McLANE’S
CELEBRATED
LIVER PILLS,
EOR THE CURE OF
Hepatitis, or Liver Complaint,
DYSPEPSIA AND SICK HEADACHE.
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
PAIN in the right side, under the
edge of the ribs, increases on pres
sure; sometimes the pain is in the left
side; the patient is rarely able to lie
on the left side; sometimes the pain is
felt under the shoulder blade, and it
frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken
for rheumatism in the arm. The
stomach is affected with loss of appe
tite and sickness; the bowels in gen
eral are costive, sometimes alternative
with lax; the head is troubled with
pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is
generally a considerable loss of mem
ory, accompanied with a painful sen
sation of having left undone some
thing which ought to have been done.
A slight, dry cough is sometimes an
attendant. The patient complains of
weariness and debility; he is easily
startled, his feet are cold or burning,
and he complains of a prickly sensa
tion of the skin; his spirits are low;
and although he is satisfied that exer
cise would be beneficial to him, yet
he can scarcely summon up fortitude
enough to try it. In fact, he distrusts
every remedy. Several of the above
symptoms attend the disease, but cases
have occurred where few of them ex
isted, yet examination of the body,
after death, has shown the liver to
have been extensively deranged.
AGUE AND FEVER.
Dr. C. McLane’s Liver Pills, in
cases of Ague and Fever, when
taken with Quinine, are productive of
the most happy results. No better
cathartic can be used, preparatory to,
or after taking Quinine. We would
advise all who are afflicted with this
disease to give them a fair trial.
For all bilious derangements, and as
a simple purgative, they are unequaled.
BEWARE OF IMITATIONS.
The genuine are never sugar coated.
Every box has a red wax seal on the lid,
with the impression Dr. McLane’s Liver
Pills.
The genuine McLane's Liver Pills bear
the signatures of C. McLane and Fleming
Bros, on the wrappers.
Insist upon having the genuine Dr. C.
McLane’s Liver Pili.s, prepared by Flem
ing Bros., of Pittsburgh, Pa., the market being
full of imitations of the name McLane,
spelled differently but same pronunciation.
