The Angora Goat. The introduction of the Angora gnat into California falls very far in 1 1 of expectations. The animals !ive a healthy look, the fleece isbeau i fill and prepossessing in appearance, in< best qualities of wool command a good price, the pelts make beautiful robes and rugs, the meat of the kids Ia delicacy, the tanned skins are L’oud material for gloves; but the Inmding of the Angora goat for ite !i ice is a failure in California, where it Ins been tried for twenty years, as in Kentucky and Georgia for thirty tturs, and in France for half a centu i v. In five years after the first Merino ih'P had been brought to California ! n wool growing purposes, the first iiui erter had made a fortune, and wo< 1 had become a prominent article f exportation. In twenty years the Angora goat wool has not been able ..ii btain a mention in the ordinary n imual summaries of exports. The '• tm who have goats for sale at high i ices, tell about the shipments of vtjgora wool, but the records of the c imnercial newspapers know noth ing of them, and the large shippers <>f wool and the annual wool circulars i ike no account of them. So far as i generally known, no herd of goats ;n that State yields enough wool to ;> i v the interest on their cost and the ■ x pease of keeping them, and every imrson prominent as the owner of t< m looks for his main profit not to u. wool clip, but to the purchase of in ; bucks by ignorant and deceived i itomers. The production of Ango i wool may ultimately be a success in California; hitherto it has been a in ist complete failure as a source of rnfit to those who made the venture. ! is reported that there are fifty i uoiisand high grade goats in that State.— New York Commercial Bulletin Measuring Heads. The London Medical Record sums up as follows the resuits of some vi ry interesting measurements of • " ads by two French physicians, Messrs. Lacassagne and Cliquet : ii.vingthe patients, doctors, atten dants, and officers of the Yal de Grace at their disposal, they meas ured the heads ot 120 doctors of medicino, 133 soldiers who had re <• uved an elementary instruction, 90 N‘ ldiers who could neither read nor write, and 91 soldiers who were pris ' ners. The instrument used was ino same which hatters employ in measuring the heads of their custom ers ; it is called the conformator, and ives a very correct idea of the proportions and dimensions of the e ads in question. The results were in favor of the doctors, frontal diarne o r was alsjmuch more considerable nun that of the soldiers, etc. Nor me both halves of the head syrnmet -1 cally developed—in student®, the !• it frontal region is more developed ban the right ; in lllitera.e iudi uuls, the right occipital region is lar r than the left. The authors have " rived the following conclusions irom their ixperim, nts : 1. The head oi students who have worked much w th their brains are much more de v loped thau those of illiterate iLcli v. duals, or such as have allow ' i their brains to remain inactive.— 2 In students the Irontal region L i jure developed than the occipital irngiou, or, if there should be any ii Itc-rence in favor of the latter, it is v ry small, while in iilitera'e people 1.. e latter region is the largest. u sl>i lit liiiSuewccs.” The Pennsylvania Board of Par dons in just now considering the case of John S. Morton, the arista ratio Pniladelphian who was sen eaced to the penitentiary for ten \ ears for the crime of overissuing reet ra lway stock to the amount of $1,200,000. It is said upon good athority that the rich rogue will be ,-ardoned, on the ground that “he was controlled in his financial op erations by imaginary spirit iuliu ences.” If the Board of Pardons would i ike the trouble to investigate, the) would lied that many a poor tramp who stole a chicken was “controlled u his operation’’ by the unromantic i ict that he was hungry and without money to buy food. But then of course tbe Board wouldn’t take an) notice of or pardon a prisoner upon uch a plea. “Spirit influences ’is .no only excuse for disho; tsty which luo Board of Pardons will accept, ; ■ml even then, to bo tff.rctive, it cud mily be offered by a wealthy thief who has plenty of political ami other mlluence. If an ordinary thief should ask for pardon upon the ground that he committed the crime while under the inllueuce of inhabitants of the spirtual wold, ho would bo looked upon either as a lunatic or a man possessed of an amazing quantity of The lleaiilj- of Neatness. A woman may be handsome, or re markably active in various ways; but i she is not personally neat, she can .iot hope to win admiration. Fine lollies will not conceal tbe slattern. V. young woman with her hair always hi disorder, and her clothes hanging about her us if suspended from a prop, is always repulsive. Slattern is written upon her person from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet, and if she wins a husband, he turns out, in all probability, either to be an idle fool or a drunken ruffian. The bringing up of daughters to be able to work, talk and act like honest sensible young women, is the special task of all mothers and in the indus trial ranks there is imposed also the prime obligations of learning to re spect household work for its own sake and the comfort of happiness it will bring in the future. House work is drudgery; but it must be done by somebody and had better be well than ill done. Walking on Water A Colorado inventor is walking across the livei ut Leaven worth on patent water shoes. On June 3he .tarted from the upper side of the Missouri River bridge, and although Lhe current was running at the rate of fourteen miles an hour, the river was crossed in nine and a half min utes. After resting a few moments lie showed the audience how to man age the shoes, and how they could oe steered in any direction one wish ed to go. The shoes were then at tached together making a perfect buoy or life preserver, upon which che occupant could sit or lie with case and safety. 45 Years Before the Public. THE GENUINE DR. C. McLANE’S CELEBRATED LIVER PILLS, FOR THE CURE OF Hepatitis, or Liver Complaint, DYSPEPSIA AND SICK HEADACHE. Symptoms of a Diseased Liver. PAIN in the right side, under the edge of the ribs, increases on pres sure; sometimes the pain is in the left side; the patient is rarely able to lie on the left side; sometimes the pain is felt under the shoulder blade, and it frequently extends to the top of the shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken for rheumatism in the arm. The stomach is affected with loss of appe tite and sickness; the bowels in gen eral are costive, sometimes alternative with lax; the head is troubled with pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy sensation in the back part. There is generally a considerable loss of mem ory, accompanied with a painful sen sation of having left undone some thing which ought to have been done. A slight, dry cough is sometimes an attendant. The patient complains of weariness and debility; he is easily startled, his feet are cold or burning, and he complains of a prickly sensa tion of the skin; his spirits are low; and although he is satisfied that exer cise would be beneficial to him, yet he can scarcely summon up fortitude enough to try it. In fact, he distrusts every remedy. Several of the above symptoms attend the disease, but cases have occurred where few of them ex isted, yet examination of the body, after death, has shown the liver to have been extensively deranged. AGUE AND FEVER. Dr. C. McLane’s Liver Pills, in cases of Ague and Fever, when taken with Quinine, are productive of the most happy results. No better cathartic can be used, preparatory to, or after taking Quinine. YVe would advise all who are afflicted with this disease to give them a fair trial. For all bilious derangements, and a* a simple purgative, they are unequaled. BEWARE OF IMITATIONS. The genuine are never sugar coated. Every box has a red wax seal on the lid, with the impression Dr. McLane’s Liver Pills. The genuine McLane’s Liver Pills bear the signatures of C. McLane and Fleming Bros, on the wrappers. Insist upon having the genuine Dr. C, McLane’s Liver Pills, prepared by Flem ing Bros., of Pittsburgh, Pa., the market being full of imitations of the name McLane, spelled differently but same pronunciation. A § HA2 PS ! Sr. M. ¥/. CASE’S Liver Remedy BLOOD PURIFIER Tonic and CordlaL ! This is not a patent medicine, but is prepared under the direction of Dr. M. YV. Case, icoin, hit favorite prescription, which in an extensive practice of over twenty-seven years he has found most effective in al! cases of disordered liver or impure blood. It is ANTI-BILIOUS. It acts directly upon the liver, restoring it when diseased to its normal condition; and in regulating the activity of this great gland every other organ of the system is benefited. In Blood Diseases it has no equal as a purifier. It im proves digestion, and assists nature to eliminate all impurities from tile system; and while it is the cheapest medicine in the market, it is also superior to all known remedies. While it is jiore effectual than Blue Mass, it is mild and perfectly safe, containing nothing that can in the slightest degree injure the system. It. does not sicken or give pain; neither does it weaken the patient, nor leave the system constipated, as do most other medicines.
