Something, Not Nothing.
It is within the province of all to
be somebody or nobody. The first
lives, the otler exists. One has
hopes and doubts, aspirations and
fears, the other takes the world as he
finds it. We find occasionally men
fit to die and crowds not fit to live.
Some are fit for heaven, bat not for
earth, while others are fit for an un
discovered country whereof the mind
man knows nothing. If you would
be known and not know, vegetate in
a village; if you would know and not
be known, live in a city. The largest
countryman is lost in the aggregation
of individuals, sad bobs tarn to gaas
at presidents when fee sight isaeom
mon one.
Everybody can become something
if they wish. Sir Walter Raleigh
wrote on a window pane with a dia
mond, “Fain would I climb, but that
I fear to fall.” Queen Elizabeth saw
the act of the young cavalier, and.
unobserved wrote underneath, “If
thing heart fails, then do not climb
at all.” The world still echoes with
Ralleigh’s fame. When asked how
in his short life he had performed so
much, he replied, “When I have a
thing to do, Igo and do it.” That’s
the secret of fame and fortune.
Intended actions, never commit
ted, are like posthumous charities—
the very essenee of selfishness, when
bequeathed by those I who in life
would part with nothing. It has
the appearance of leaving their own
souls as heirs.
The world hates mediocrity. It
attaches both to virtue and vice.
What use has the gamester for
those of the brotherhood who always
lose; what gains one to have a
heavy weight attached to his every
exertion ? If a planter strive to be
the best farmer; a lawyer to rival
those up stairs; a politician to win
the highest office; a preacher to de
liver the choicest sermons; if a Chris
tian set the purest example; if a gen
tleman, deserve the name, and let the
cad do likewise. In each sphere it
is the duty of all to do the best that
can be done; to regard business as a
source of pleasure, as the sweetest
charm that life can giv >. Capacities
differ. Some mount rapidly and stay
there; success turns many heads gid
dy and there is a woeful fall, the
brain cannot sustain the position;
others, with t yes undimmed, reach
the topmost height. All cannot be
great but ail can be respected. Some
must fall, but if so, let honor attend
the disaster. If victory cannot be
won, it can be deserved.
In the social circle all cannot be
brilliant conversationalists, but each
can be dittinguished as listeners,
giving a silent compliment. The
mark of the man of the world is ab
sence of pretensions. We know peo
ple who have that rare tact which
makes you think that you are pleas
ing them while they fascinate you.
There are women with minds such
that when they talk the eloquent
blood speaks in her cheaks and so
directly wrought, that we might al
most say their bodies thought. Fol
ly chirped in is framed into some
thing of beauty and the listener is
enchanted.
If a nobody you are determined to
be, be the best nobody that you can.
Do not make pretensions to be any
thing else for the world will discover
the deception. Wealth can float on
flowery beds of ease, lulled by the sy
ren song of delight. If poor, envy
and repining never gained wealth.
Shakespeare’s shepherd expressed
content when he said: “Sir, I am a
true laborer; I earn what I wear;
owe no man hate; envy no man's hap
piness; am of other men’s good; con
tent with my farm.’’ He was a some
body.
Poverty is the nurse of manly en
ergy and heaven climbing thoughts
around whose steps the mountain
breezes blow, and from whose coun
tenance all.the virtues gather strength.
The distinguished men that in every
department of life guide and control
were not as a general rule rocked and
dandled in the lap of wealth. They
have emerged from the homes of de
cent competence or poverty. Neces
sity sharpens faculties and priva
tion and sacrifice brace the moral na
ture. They learn the great art of re
nunciation and enjoy the happiness
of having few wants. There is not
an idle fibre in their frames. They
put the vigor of a resolute purpose
in every act, and the edge of the
mind is ever kept sharp. In the
school of life, men like these meet
the softly nutured darlings of pros
perity as the vessels of iron meet
those of porcelain.
The nobody can expect nothing,
He cannot expect that the world will
give him a living, though he says so.
He does nothing, can get nothing,
and has no reason to anticipate any
thing. Those who perform all their
tasks in an indifferent air, who find
no joy in procuring a subsistence,
who, employed, work only to win the
salary and have no pride in the un
dertaking belong to the nobodies.
Whoever dreads punishment suf
fers it, and whoever deserves dreads
it.
The somebodies have a hereafter
to live for. They are not content
with an existence. They aspire to
something more lasting than tempo
rary good. The nobody dwells in
the present. There is more in that
dream of living beyond the grave
than many think. In the beautiful
drama of lon the instinct of immor
tality so eloquently uttered by the
devoted Greek finds a dear responoe
in every thoughtful soul. When
about to yield up his young exist
ence to Fate, his betrothed, Olem
anthe, asks if they shall meet again,
to which he replies: “I have asked
that dreadful question of the hills
that look eternal; of the flowing
streams that flow forever; of the stars
’among whose fields of azure my
raised spirt hath walked in glory—all
were dumb. But while I gaze upon
thy living face, I feel there is some
thing in the love which mantles
through its beauty that cannot whol
ly perish. We shall meet again
Clemanthe.”
Be a something, not a nothing,
Adversity may come, but it can be
be conquered. Take it and “faint
not faint heart, but stoutly say ‘so be
it.’ ’’
It is said that a blue-eyed woman
with blonde hair can out-lobby all
the black-eyed women in Washing
ton. They have got a positively irre
sistable way of puckering their
mouths.

Cathartic Pills
Combine the choicest cathartic principles
in medicine, in proportions accurately ad
justed to secure activity, certainty, and
uniformity of effect. They are the result
of years of careful study and practical ex
periment, and are the most effectual rem
edy yet discovered for diseases, caused by
derangement of the stomach, liver, and
bowels, which require prompt and effectual
treatment. Ayer's Pills are specially ap
plicable to this class of diseases. They act
directly on the digestive and assimilative
processes, and restore regular healthy ac
tion. Their extensive use by physicians in
their practice, and by all civilized nations,
is one of the many proofs of their value as
a safe, sure, and perfectly reliable purgative
medicine. Being compounded of the con
centrated virtues of purely vegetable sub
stances, they arc positively free from calo
mel, or any injurious properties, and can be
administered to children with perfect safety.
Ayer’s Pili,s are an effectual cure for
Constipation or Costiveness, Indiges
tion. Dyspepsia, Loss of Appetite,
Foul Stomach and Breath, Dizziness,
Headache, Loss of Memory, Numbness,
Biliousness, Jaundice, Rheumatism,
Eruptions and Skin Diseases, Dropsy,
Tumors, Worms, Neuralgia, Colic,
Gripes, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Gout,
Piles, Disorders of the Liver, and all
other diseases resulting from a disordered
state of the digestive apparatus.
As a Dinner Pill they hare no equal.
While gentle in their action, these Pills
are the most thorough and searching cathar
tic that can he employed, and never give
pain unless the bowels are inflamed, and
then their influence is healing. They stimu
late the.appetite and digestive organs; they
operate to purify and enrich the blood, and
impart renewed health and vigor to the
whole system.

70,000 CARH IA G-ICS
Manufactured by EMERSON, FISHER & CO., are Now in Use in Ev
ery Part of the American Continent.
They give unfailing satisfaction. All their work is warranted. They have received
testimonials from all parts of the country of purport similar to the following, hundreds
of which are on file subject to inspection:
Messrs. Emerson, Usher <£ Co.: Galva, Ills., July 16, 1879.
I have used one of your Top Buggies three years, and three of them two years in my
livery stable, and they have given me perfect satisfaction and are in constant use.
OSCAB SMALLEY.
Messrs. Coppock & Johnson: Newbebby, S. C., July 17, 1879.
Dear Sibs—l have been using the Emerson A Fisher Buggy I bought from you as
roughly, I suppose, as any one could. I had a fast horse, drove him at full speed, some
times with two grown ladies and myself in the buggy, and it is to-day worth all the
money I paid for it. I say the Emerson & Fisher Buggies will do.
A. M. TEAGUE, Farmer.
The favorable reputation the Carriages have made in localities where they have been
used for several years by liverymen, physicians, and others requiring hard and constant
use, has led to an increased demand from those localities, to meet which the manufactur
ing facilities of their mammoth establishment have been extended, enabling them now to
turn out in good style
