FARMERS’ EAGLE. |
To be Well, Keep Well.
Dr. E. Hitchcock says that thb
health statistics show that Massa;
chusetts farmers live much longer ;
than any other class, dying at an av;
erage age of sixty-five and a half
years. Man’s ditvases are 113, but
one-third of them are preventive, and .
even a large per centage is due to ■
filth. Typhoid fever, the most prev
alent in most districts, is due to im
pure water. Wells should be three
times as far from any source of pol
lution as they are deep. Filth should
be carried off by underground drains,
or, if use as manure, be made less
injurious by the use of an absorbent,
as dry earth or ashes. Cess-pools
should be water-tight, frequently
emptied and never allowed to drain
into the soil. The privy, too, is often
the cause of much ill health because
of its exposed situation. Bad cook
ing is also a fertile source of sick
ness; there is too much frying done,
and too much pastry eaten. Pure
air in sleeping-rooms is indispensable
to good health, and an opening to
the outside air at least a foot wide is
necessary. But the room need not
be excessively cold, a twenty minutes’
airing being enough on very cold
days.
Soda for Burns.
We must again call attention to
the fact that all kinds of burns, in
cluding scalds and sunburns, are al
most immediately relieved by the ap
lication of a solution of soda to the
burnt surface. It must be remem
bered that dry soda will not do un
less it is surrounded with a cloth
moist enough to dissolve it. This
method of sprinkling it on and cov
ering it with a wet cloth is often the
very best. But it is sufficient to
wash the wound repeatedly with a
strong solution. It would be well to
keep a bottle of it always on hand,
made so strong that more or less set
tles on bottom Dr. Waters thinks
the pain of a burn is caused by the
hardening of the albumen of the flesh
which presses on the nerves, and
that the soda dissolves the albumen
and thus relieves the pressure.
Others thinks that the burn gene
rates an acrid acid which the soda
neutralizes.
+
Luck and Labor.
If the boy who exclaims, “Just my
luck,” was truthful, he would say,
“Just my laziness !” or “Just my in
attention ! ’ Mi. Cobden wrote some
proverbs about “Luck and Libor.”
It would ba well for our boys to
memorize them:
Luck is waiting for something to
turn up.
Labor, with keen eyes and strong
will, will turn up something.
Luck lies in bed and wishes the
postman would bring him news of a
legacy.
Lal or turns out at 6 o’elock, and
with busy pen or ringing hammer
lays the foundation of a competence.
Luck whines.
Labor whistles.
Luck relies on chances.
Labor on character.
Luck slips down to indigence.
Labor strides upward to indepen
dence.
To Cure a Cold,
By simply abstaining from drink
and liquid food of any kind fcr as
long a period as possible, tue inter
nal congestion—which is, in fact, the
condition generally known as “a
cold”—becomes reduced. The cause
of congestion is the excess of blood
contained in the overcharged mem
branes, and this is removed when the
general bulk of the blood has been
diminished by withholding the usual
supply of fluid; by keeping the sup
ply for a day or two down to a point
at which some degree of thirst is yet
experienced, a complete cure may be
effected.
Curry the Cows.
No animal of the farm will show
signs of neglect so soon as a cow.
The coat gets rough and dirty and
the bones stand out with irregular
and peculiar prominence. On the
other hand, as a matter of course,
good care gives the opposite appear
ance, and the creature is neat, clean
and plump. There is much in a
good supply of wholesome food, but
it, without occasional rubbing and
currying, will not make the cow look
and feel comfortable. It pays to
curry the cows.
Keep tlie Good Calves.
As the cows come in the best of
the heifers may be selected for rais
ing. There can be no better way to
improve the stock of cows than to
use a good bull and keep the best
calves, well feeding and caring for
them until matured. After these
become cows a selection can again be
made for breeding, and only the best
retained. In a few’ years the value
of dairy cows may be doubled by this
careful practice of selection.
The Juice of the Tomato Plaut
as an Insecticide.
A German gardener has found by
experience that black or green flies,
caterpillars, etc , are at once destroyed
by syringing the plants affected by
them with water in which the stems
of the tomato plants have been well
boiled. The liquor is applied when
cold, and not only kills the insects
but leaves an odor which prevents
others from coming.
Soup for au Invalid.
Cut in small pieces one pound of
beef or mutton, or a part of both;
boil gently in two quarts of water;
take off the scum, and when reduced
to a pint strain it. Season with a
little salt, and take a teacupful at a
time.
The following extraordinary inscrip
tion appears on a tombstone in the
English graveyard at Peshawur :
“Sacred to the memory of Rev.
Blank Blank, A.M., who spent seven
teen years as a missionary among
the Afghans, and translated the holj
writ into their language. He was
shot by hie attendant. ‘Well done,
thou good and faithful servant.”
It is estimated that 50,000 men
and women are employed in Phila
delphia in the manufacture of cloth
ing, making 20,00,-000 suits a year.

hair. Faded or gray
hair is soon restored
to its original color,
with the gloss and

Thin hair is thick

by its use. Nothing can restore the
hair where the follicles are destroyed,
or the glands atrophied and decayed.
But such as remain can le saved for
usefulness by this application. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi

Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. Free
from those deleterious substances which
make some preparations dangerous, and
injurious to the hair, the V igor can

Containing neither oil nor dye, it does

They give unfailing satisfaction. All their work is warranted. They have received

Messrs. Emerson, Wisher & Co.: Galva, Ills., July 16, 1879.
I have used one of your Top Buggies three years, and three of them two years in my

Dear Sibs—l have been using the Emerson & Fisher Buggy I bought from you as

The favorable reputation the Carriages have made in localities where they have been

In Flowery Branch a man is found—
He sells goods cheap and you may swear it;
His stock is always fresh and sound:
His name is F. S. BARRETT.
0
And he makss his bow to the readers of the Eagle this morning, and announces
that his stock of
GENERAL MERCHANDISE
Is now more complete than ever before, and he is constautly receiving fresh
additions to it; in proof of which he invites the public to
CALL, EXAMINE AND BE CONVINCED.
His stock embraces everything generally kept in a first-class
FAMILY SUPPLYING HOUSE,
And he will sell you anything for use in the house, the shop or the field, as cheap as it
can be bought in Northeast Georgia.
DO NOT FORGET
That he is a one-price man a low-price man and a cash-price man. Ho buys for cash
and is thus saved the heavy rates of interest charged by wholesale
houses to credit traders, and he gives
HIS CUSTOMERS
THE
BENEFIT OF THE TiIAZNHACTION.
When you want anything in his line call on him and examine his stock »nd prices
before buying elsewhere, and you will never regret it.
