SHOT DEAD AIDING WOMAN
Good Samaritan, Suspected as Assail
ant, Killed in View of Throng
Coming From Church.
New York. —Two thousand persons
emerging from the Church of Our J
Lady of Peace, Carroll street and
Denton place, Brooklyn, were seized ,
with panic when they saw a man op- I
posite the church level a revolver at
a man who was supporting the head
of a prostrate woman. A se<ipnd later
he pulled the trigger of the weapon
and the bullet pierced the man’s chest
above the heart.
The victim was Michael Laveglio.
According to the police, the man who
shot him was Demetrio Giorgiano.
son of a Mrs. Giorgiano, In whose aid
Laveglio was playing the part of a
good Samaritan.
Several persons in the vicinity said
the shooting grew out of a quarrel
which started over a marriage cere
mony which was to have taken place
in the church. These statements could
not be verified by the police.
It was said that Mrs. Giorgiano had
assailed the character of the bride
groom-to-be, and was attacked by
women in the street. Alberto Cirino,
502 Carroll street, joined the women,
the police said, and slashed at Mrs.
Giorgiano with a razor, cutting off
her thumb.
When the church doors opened the
lirst man to leave was Laveglio. He
saw the prostrate and unconscious
woman in the roadway and ran to her
assistance. In the meantime, it is al
leged, word had been sent to Deme
trio Giorgiano that his mother had
been mortally wounded In a quarrel.
He ran coatless to the scene, with
his revolver in hand. The instant he
saw Laveglio bending over his mother,
he fired, according to the police, be
lieving Giorgiano had stabbed his
mother.
TOOK 600 YEARS TO BUILD IT
Cathedral at Little Italian Town of
Arezzo Just Finished Was
1 Begun in 1277.
Florence, Italy.—The picturesque lit
tle town of Arezzo, on the way from
Florence to Perugia, is about to cele
brate the completion of its cathedral,
which was begun over six hundred
years ago.
In striking contrast with the rapidity
with which great structures are erect
ed ifi America, there are many build
ings in Italy which were begun many
centuries ago, which never have been
finished, and never will be, since such
an attempt might spoil the artistic har
mony of the whole, gained through
centuries of wind, weather and chang
ing tastes.
instances of such unsuccessful at
tempts have recently been seen at
Florence and Milan, where new fa
cades have been added to the old ca
thedrals. They were greeted with de
rision by the citizens, who described
them as sugar decorations on a wed
ding cake.
The architects have had more luck
at Arezzo and what was already a fine
specimen of Italian Gothic architec
ture, whose corner stone was laid in
1277, is now complete. The celebra
tion will take place in May, and a num
ber of art loving foreigners are expect
ed to be attracted to the ancient town,
which was the birthplace of Cilnius
Maecenas, the patron of Virgil and
Horace.
WOMAN THINKS SNAKE ROPE
She Grabs Coiled Object, It Wriggles
and She Battles With
Broom. ** „
Federalsburg, Md. —Mrs. Ida Adams,
wife of William T. Adams, proprietor
, of Riverview Inn here, had a thrilling
experience with a snake in one of the
rooms of the hotel. Mrs. Adams en
tered the room with a broom to sweep
it, when she spied what she thought
was a piece of rope wrapped around
one of the chairs.
Grabbing the supposed rope she was
horrified to feel it wriggle in her
hands, and panic-stricken when she
discovered it was a snake. A lively
battle ensued in which the woman and
broom came out victorious.
Upon investigation, she found the
reptile to be a pet snake belonging to
a theatrical troupe stopping at the
hotel. The members of the troupe were
deeply grieved when they learned of
the death of their pet, and a. small
cortege followed the dead pet to its
last resting place on the banks of th&
Nanticoke.
TANGO WARMS UP ACTRESSES
Girls Flee Flames and Drive Audience
Wild With Dance to Keep
From Freezing.
Indianapolis, Ind. —Two young ac
tresses danced the tango when a lire
was raging in the basement of the
Ballard apartment house, Delaware
and Ohio streets. The actresses had
been driven out of their rooms in the
Albert hotel, which adjoins the Bal
lard house, and they made several hun
dred spectators forget the thrills of
spectacular rescues by their dancing,
en deshabille, on the pavement of
Ohio street. They did it to keep,
warm. There was no accompaniment
except the splashing of streams of wa
ter from the fire hose. The “audience”
went wild. The fire started in the
basement of the apartment house,
filled the entire building with dense
smoke and made necessary the rescue
of several persons who attempted
flight by means of the fire escapes.
