Nkau WoodbOky, Oa., June 4th 1874.--
Mr. Editor: 1 ilestre through the column*
of your valuable paper to ctU the attention
of the plainer* of Meriwether County to a
very superior oat that I have been ra Mug
tor several years. You, as well as , great
many of our planters are aware that we
cannot make cotton to buy ooru. Bitter
experience ha* taught ui this fact, and I
with a great many others, am satisfied that
we canuoi raise corn sufßcieu' to run our
1 arms successfully, with t*e present sy*
tern of labor, ou our worn out snd almost
exhausted laud* without fertilising. I
think every man ought to do and say all
he<mb that will land to benefit the fatmiug
class.
When I commenced towing these oats
I bad about a thimble lull, wuich I drilled
iu. I noticed them very closely and saw
hat they matured very eur j. I took a
great deal of pains with them, and now
think I will be able to supply a grail many
ot the planters with a tow lor seed. 1 And
if they are sown early in the lull they will
-ilpen by the first of May, making them'
ready for feeding to stock two monthsand a
half belore we get through plowing. They
are rutt proof, and will stand the winter
and are eery prtf(/fn.
List fall I did not eow them until about
the middle of December, and I commenced
iueiling my mule* on them the tirst of May.
wli ii one feed of corn per day: My mule*
kept up Imiler than they have for everal
year*. The laai tour week* they have bad
no corn and 1 know they look better than
a gieat many uiule* that are led on boagkt
corn. Mr; Byrd Koveit, we all know t* a
great oat man, and la kdWtThf i variety of
fine oat*, lie aaye flirt mine turpaeaes bis
Hum the fact that they ripen earlier, and
the rust never effect* them, lent satisfied
that they will yield at much or more Ilian
any oat sown In the county*
1 have u 11V le mure than an acre sewn
near my Jot and hV" been feeding my
mule*, live head, since the tirst ol May
without corn ; and know lh*t that Ini and
Wmi'd i ot have medeen uigli coin lo have
led them h If that lime.
Hr v era I rl fmy nefgbletr*, wTm sate ih*
patch Im fore I cut them said It would make
•evenly five bunhel*. The land wae In
■ olton last year with ate hundred pounds
ol Umno, and 1 Just plowed up Ike stalk*
mid plowed fn the oats without putting
any fertiliser of any kind on them
I propose to supply as mauy as wish
them with wed, or a* many a* I can, St
low ilnlLum pur pushel, and If a man will
iow them In the Inll on ordinary land Slid
not make any I will supply him with seed
again Ires of charge.
