We call attention, in this issue of the Vrs.-roa, to the enterprise and liberality of tho business men of Co lumbus. No city, pei haps* of its m'V.o, can boost of more dv.ti -beaded and reliable merchants anil business men* A teffemtec to ortr advertising col umns will show that some of them, at leant, appreciate and desire to re tain the trade of old Harris. Columbus, owing, perhaps,as much to her enterprising population, ns to her natural advantages uf water-pow er, locution, etc., hat grown to bn eity of ns milch importance as any other of the same populattoti. Among the tunny recent impfovc tuenta which we tiave noticcl, is the new pavement introduced by Messrs. W..L, Salisbury and T. E. Blanchard —an improvement which the city has long needed. The buainoss men who appreciate the vnlnc of printer's ink art' num bered among her best and most suc cessful merchants. Mr. J. 11. Hamilton, corner Frank lin and Warren streets—ihim whom a more geotlema tly and reliable gro- cer would be hard to find— advertises a large and complete stock in his Hoc. We consider Hniinoccaaary, however, to say more of him, as he lias been known for twenty year* to the most of our ct.,lrons. Messrs. Mr. Watt was raised in thia county, and is well and favoiably known to almost every one of our citizens who trades In Colum bus. The junior, Mr. J. A. Walker, is one of the mort affable and clover ‘gentlemen we ever met. Of the dry-goods firms we take pleasure in calling attention to that of Crigler k Gordon, of tho Virginia Store. These energetic and eutei pri sing business men came to Columbus in IHttO; and by n liberal use of pi in-, tei’s ink, together with their honesty and energetic application to business, have succeeded in building up the largest and most extensive trade in their line in tho city. Mr. T. S. Spear, ut the Finger Sew ing Machine Depot, advertises large aud varisd slock of pure nml reliable gooda in bin lino. Hi* lino assort ment of, spectacle*, of which he makes a specially, will supply a want long fell in this seel ion. Tho se nior is by sotuu called “Old Reliable” —he having been in business since 1805, end never had a hill presented the second lime for payment —which fact be defies any man to disprove. AH in need of fresh ami reliable drugs, would do well to call at J, 1.. Jordan's. Mr. J. has recently moved to Colmnlms from Furnnmlina, Kin., and oomes well recommended. Col. ASadC.uk. —The Fillmore Gouniy (Minn.) Republican says: One of the most heai i rending cases of loss of life by freezing, ooouried lasi week, about four m'ries north west of Granger, in this county. It hap pened that an Tuesday, 1 ly: day the great storm began, Mr Evans, a Welch minister of the Gospel, was away from homo with his wife and two children. On his return in the evening, the storm overtook Imp, and, it appears, when within three quarters of a mile ol his own house, a snowdrift stopped further progress in that direction. From the indica tions, it is supposed ho took liis old est child out of the cutler and carried it home, after which, taking a couple of blankets, 1m uu tinted to the cm tor, wrapped his fnrd writs in the blankets, and carrying ltin babe, started for the house again, but never reached it. In the violent storm he lost, his way, and with his babe peilshed. Mean- I while, the child that he had carried I homo was waiting in the cold for 'll n return of its father; the anxious wife was waning in tee entte for hor husband. Who can describe her ag- ony ami the little ones suspense. It is ad left to conjecture. When the neighbors called at the house the Saturday following, it had but a soli tary little frozen occupant; the wife mother was toned a stiffened corpse; the horse had also succumbed to ihe raging storm. How or where the im'ortnnale husband and babe were tumid wc are not definitely in formed. A pumpkin pio ten feet in diameter and lour feet deep was the dost rl at icoeul California dinner. A llonr. m : Account.—A dis tressing aecilent look place at Loss's St.n‘on cu the Sou ill Carolina Rail road lately. ■ Four colored men who we c enga ged in turpentine distilling bad hasti ly put tip a rough shaffty, which they covered over with straw. On Wed nesday night they turned in ns usual, ’caving a lire burning in the middle [of the shanty. During the night tho ! ticki'ily concern fell with a c ash up |on tho slcepe 's. The straw roof in- I staiiilv caught fire, and before my j help could come to the men, or they ; could rear re themselves, they were ; burned to death. Krvu Srr.es.— A nnn had commit ted murder, was tried, tumid guilty, and condemned to bo banged, A few days before his execution he drew upon the walls of his prison a gallows with five steps leading up to it. On the first step he wrote, “ Diso bedience to parents.” On the second stop, “ Sabbath breaking.” On tlte third step, “Gambling and Drunkenness.” On the fourth, “ Murder.’’ On the fifth stop was the platform j on whirl) the gallows stood. This poor fellow doubtless wrote the history of many a wasted and ! kjst life. A maligned physie’nn in Memphis says: “I regard such foal slime ns beneath contempt, to lie ex ! pe<\ed only from persons lower in ; Ihe scale 01 humanity than any with j whom I am acquainted; poisons whose sou's could be blown through the hollow of a gnat’s bristle, and roam I or a eenturv within the cavity of a j tobacco seed without exploring ail its wonders.” t-i?" The McDonald boys found, the other day, that there wßi- a rooster on their farm that was useless. lie jnst loafed around and didn’t Lay any eggs, mid wouldn’t even help lake care of the horses. In f Act it tost i jnst fts-HVirli to keep that rooster as j it djd one that was earning its living. Charley and Jennings held a council of wA r , and concluded to slay the roosfe.-i They took a Smith and W c*- son revolver and an oyster can full of cartridges and penned the rooster up inside a high hoard fence, and at ] o’clock gave him notice to lay down his arms or they would move on his wor ks at once. ' The rooster nut his thunih to his nose and told them as plain as tie couhl that they would have to walk over hit dead body first. At this they became mad, mid the cannonading commenced. They shot at him about forty time®, to get the range, and then begin to shoot at hi3 vital parts. Tho rooster walk ed round the yard and watched tor angle worms, as though it were the least of his trouble what they were shooting at. The boys took turns killing the rooster until 2 o’clock, when the ammunition gave out, and they sent for another box of cartrid ges. At this point the attacking 1 party nhoved a bitle ma'-cr, and opened on the rooster. The rooster did nqt e.aro how near they got. There v.n-; nothing mean about him. Occasionally the rooster would see where a hall struck the fence, and lie would get opposite the hole, but even with that advantage they couldn’t hit hitn. r lhe beys shot at that rooster until about 4 o’c'ock, when the revolver got so hot they couldn’t tise it. The fence was as full of holes as one of those war vete rans, but tiie rooster? OI where was lie? He was taking his customary angle - worm with as good an appetite nr, lie ever had in his life. Exasper ated at last, Jemring* citt.pttip to the rooster and took a rest across the long feathers ol his tail and fired at Bis head. The rooster’s head drop ped on the ground, and it was all over —with the angle worm he was after, but the rooster was unhurt, Chin lie proposed to get an umbrella mid rittl it down the rooster’s throat, and spread it, and see if that would kill him, when the girl, who had been waiting all the afternoon to Cook the rooster caught him and rung his neck. The boys looked disgusted when they saw how easy a fowl mur der could ho committed by one who is a good marksman. The best way to kill roosters is to wait, for them to die. That rooster would have been as old as Methuselah if he had waited to be kil'ed by a ball from that revol ver. A. M. Ai.lji, P. Pules. A.
