Th Cash System. —As we have to pay the
cash for everything we use about our house
and office, we are compelled to do a strictly
cash business. We will take wood or pro

scfiptions. Although anxious for patronage,
we prefer a limited cash business to an ex

Habeas Corpus Case,
The following case of habeas cor
pus was heard before Judge Wil
liams, on the 31st ult.:
Seaborn Prater, a person of color,
master of Fred. Evans, a colored
minor, sued out a writ of habeas cor
pus to return said minor to his pos
session and custody, against A. Hud
son, of this county.
Upon the hearing of the case, plain
tiff introduced evidence to prove the
death of the (mother,, and that she
died without ft,n estate the profits or
income of which were sufficient to
support said minor; also proved that
the father of said minor was not a
citizen of .this cojjijty, and that he
had no estate'the-profits or iffßome
of which were sufficient ‘to support
or maintain said minor.
Defendant introduced testimony to
rebut the above facts; and, after ar
gument beard, the Court rendered
the following decision: , •
That it appears to the Court, from
the evidence of plaintiff, that the
mother of said Fred Evans died in
this wmty without an estate, and
that the father is a non-resident of
this county. It is therefore ordered
and adjudged by the Court that the
Sheri# place the said Fred. Evans in
•the custody of the master.
L. L. Stanford for plaintiff.
Hines Dozier for defendant.
Very Wrong. The Columbus
Sun, of the 29th ult., says:
“ Tlie exercises of the College are
now suspended, with the exception
of that portion of the pupils who are
taught by that excellent lady, Miss
King, in the Baptist church. So re
ports the Visitor.’'
Don’t say anything more about the
njislakos made by country papers.
The Visitor stated very plainly, last
week, that ibe exercises .of the Col
lege were not, nor had they been sus
pended. Will the Sun please itmke t
the correction ?

How to Build up a Town.
The unthinking masses do not seem
to understand how towns prosper,
or to know how they are build up.
When they hear the announcement
that Mr. Shoddy, the rich capitalist,
is coining to town, they alLrejoice—
believing he will be a great acquisi
tion to the place, while JV{r, Blank,
the industrious mprphant or mechanic,
or enterprising editor, or competent
teacher, is scarcely noticed. Let us
see what are the practical results.
Mr. Shoddy loans his money at 10,
115 and 20 per cent to the industrious,
hard working citizens, and they soon
find that they are working for him
and that he receives all the benefit of
their labor. He , turpg out to be a
moth, eating up the substance of the
community. As he grows richer if
grows poorer, and thus it goes from
bad to worse. Suppose we take a
manufacturer, who furnishes employ
ment to the poor, creates a market
for old rags, or other comparatively
worthless articles, and after convert
ing the same into paper or other ar
ticles of value, sells the same in other
communities, and thus brings in
'money from abroad is disbursed by
the manufacturer aud his employees,
thereby adding largely to the aggre
gate income of the community in
stead of being a lax upon its indus
try. The same is true of the indus.-
trious mechanic, teacher or editor.
Take a newspaper, for example, It
gathers up small amounts, it is true,
but in aggregate they run up to two,
three, five or ten thousand dollars a
year. This money is drawn from a
vast area of country—here a little
and there a little—but, like our no
ble rivers, it is the aggregate of the
thousand rivulets which feed it, and
when gathered makes a resistless
flood. This amount is expended-in
the community, and every.iqan wom
an and child receives benefit'Yro* it,
either directly or indirectly. It will
be seen then, that whatever brings
money into a community arid pass
that money jn general cireidatiQn,
benefits and builds up that commu
nity. * Whatever will build up *tl\e
schools, or other educational inffc&ts
of a Sommunty, must necessarily
benefit everhody in that co^mpiilry.^
Appalling Suicide. —A most ex
traordinary case of
reported from Manchester, Engl/gicb
Three clerks employed in some large
lead mills in that city, were practic
ing blank firing in the chandelier
store-rcom, as was th'ei?
when one them, named Alfred llob-,
erts, passed his rifle to a fellow-clptf
named Thomas Walter,
to aim at his breast. It' appears,
however, that Roberts had, unper
ceived by his companions, loaded the
rifle with hall cartridge, Walter
took aim as desired, and to his horror
Roberts fell dead at his feet, the bul
let having passed through his breast.
In his band was found the following
letter: ‘'March 4, 1873, lam very
glad you have saved m,e the trouble of
shooting myself. I know you are
anxious to become a marksman in the
corps; perhaps I will be of service to
you by making a target of myself.
Wishing you success to your first
shot, I remain, yours respectfully,
Alfred Roberts. Mr. Tom, Walter.”
The reason for Walter complying so
readily with Robert’s request to ,ake
deliberate aim at his breast is repor
ted to he that it is customary among
English v,olunteers to point their ri
fles at each other for the purpose,of
acquiring .steadiness of aim. The
sooner, we should think, this custom
was abolished, the better.
Qualified. — A gentleman
who is rather given to story telling
relates the following: When I was a
youDg man I spent several years in
the South, residing for a while at
Port Gibson, on the Mississippi river.
A great deal of litigation was going
on about that time, and it was not
always an easy matter to obtain a ju
ry. One day I was summoned to
act in that capacity, and repaired to
court to get excused. Op iny name
being called, I Informed his -honor,
the judge, that I was not a free-hol
der, and therefore not qualified to
serve. “ I am stopping for the time
being at this place.’’
“ You board at the JiQtol, I pre
sume?’’
“ I take meals there, hut have rooms
in anoiher part of the town, where I
lodge.’’
“ So you keep bachelor’s hall ?”
“Yes, sir.”
“How,long have you lived in that
manner?”
“ About six months.” •
“I think you are qualkEed,”.gravely
remarked ,tbe judge, “for I have
never known apa an to .keep batehe
lor’s hall the length of time you name,
who had not dirt enough in his room
to make him a free-holder. The
court docs not excuse you.”
A little Little Rock girl died,
a few days ago, of what was supposed
to be cerebrospinal meningitis. Tbe
Gazette says: Dr. Quidor, doubting
,tbe cause of her death, obtained per r
mission,to make & pout mortem exam
ination. The examination disclosed
the fact that the little girls stomach
was loaded with boiled cabbage,
which had worked itself into one
bard solid mass, distending the stom
ach and causing death, the victim dy
ing in convulsions. The Doctor says
that many of tlie deaths credited to
this cerebrospinal disease have noth
ing to do with it, and are .entirely
diftinct from it.
