is a Good Fanner? -*#We differences of opinioo exist pn the question which heeds this article. In ibe estimation of a ma jority of men, however, he is consid ered the best farmer who farms the most land, raises the biggest crops, works the great • ■ u umber of l auds, rnns the moat plows, etc. In oar cotton-raising country he is beyond all doubt the best farmer in p pular esteem who raises the greatest num ber of bales, and largest number to the band. Mr A., who, with a self- j satisfied look, t.ells you, “I mode 1000 bags last year with 100 bands— ten bags to the hand ” —is set down at once as a “ fine farmer.” Mr. 8., who made 1,100 bags with 99 hands, throws A. into the shade, and is uni- versally spoken of as a “splendid farmer;” but when Messrs. C. Sc D. come along, who M run eight big places,’’ and made 3000 bags—“eleven bags to the fall hand ” —A. and B. aink into comparative insignificance, and the praises of C . Sb D.—“the most successful planters in the South” —“the biggest planters out”—are on every tongue, wherever their fame has reached. Nobody asks whether the “fine fanner,” the “ splendid fanners,” of the “ biggest planters out," have im proved their lands by draining, ditch es, subroiling and manuring; whether they have ascertained the character and elements of their lands, and cropped and manured them with ref erence to tbeir capacity aud require ment*; whether they have raised their own provision*, made their manure, kept accurate accounts of their farm ing operations, and have a practical knowledge of the science of farming. All that is asked is, bow many bagß of cotton have they raised ? Their plantations may be spotted all over with old fields, worn and tom to bar renness; their fields may be seamed with yawning gnllies; their bouses, bums and stables may be as tumbled down and yawning aa possible, with out a flower or a vegetable in the garden, and all the appliances of the farm may be as rude and unsightly as can be imagined. The big ootton crops blot out all other transgres sions. Thia id all wrong. The good far mer is he who raises big crops, and, at the same time, improves his land; who understands his business, attends to it, and does it; whoso stock are of the beet, and in the best condition; whose fenoes are always in good re pair ; whose farm buildings are com. modious and neat; whose dwelling has the appearance of the home of civilised people; whose manure heap is very large and increasing; whose corn-crib and smoke-house are over full of corn and meat raised by him self; who is surrounded by all the necessaries and comforts of life; who studies his profession, and strives to reach the perfection of farming econ omy, and knows at the end of the year exactly what he has made, what he has expended, and how he stands with the world. He may not raise more than ten bags of cotton, or even lees; he may bo only that des picable thing, a “patch farmer,” but in reality he is incalculably a better farmer than the “fine,” the “splen did,” and the “ biggest planters oat," and the time ia rapidly approaching wheu to follow bin improved system, emigrate or starve, will be the only alternative left to those who now des pise agrienharai improvement, boast of never reading an agricultural book or journal, and fancy that what they don’t know is not worth knowing, because they are doing exactly as “daddy done”—toting corn in one end and a rock in the other end of the sack, aa the most economical mode of balancing the load.— South, rrn Farm and Uoma. par Corns on horses’ feet sre tbs result of bad shoeing, or allowing the shoes to remain on the feet too long ■without being reset The only way to relieve corns on the feet of any animal is to remove the cause—pres sure. E^etable IR PlH S '^ The startling drawback on nearly all me dicinal agents has ever been that in tbelr process of pnrgation aud purification they have also debilitated the ryatem. To obviate this difficulty physicians have long sought for an agent that would purge, purifyaud strengthen at one and the same time. Their research has at last been rewarded by a dis oovery which fnlly realises the fondest desires of the medical faculty, and which is justly regarded ss the most Important triumph that Pharmacy baa ever achieved. This import ant desideratum is Dr. Tutt's Vegetable Liver Fills, which purify the blood and remove all corrupt humors and unhealthy accumulations from the body, and yet produce no weakness or lassitude whatever, but, on the contrary, tone the stomach and invigorate the body daring the progress of tbeir operation. They unite the heretofore irreconcilable qualities of a Strengthening purgative and a purifying tonic. Dr. Tutt's Pills are the moat active and searching medicine in existence. They at once attack the very root of disease, and their action is so prompt, that in an hour or two after they are taken the patient it aware of their good effects. They mar be taken at any time without restraint of diet or occupa tion; they produce neither-nausea, griping or debility, and as a family medicine they havu no rival. Price 26 cents a box. PATILLD, Admr.. GOOD NEWS AT LAST! HOW TO SAVE MONEY! STARTLING DISCLOSURES! Read Carefully. It will Astonish, Profit, and Gratify Yon. The intelligent world ha* believed for a long time that a first-class, reliable, strong, dura ble and light-running Hewing Machine could be manufactured and sold for a reasonable pnee. This lias been verified at last! 0,. 'I he Wilson Sewing Machine Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, is justly entitled to the honor of being characterized as a public benefactor, for placing upon the market a lirst-class Sew ing Machine in every respect, at a price within the reach of all, and at the same time finish ing it in artistic elegance, pleasing to the most fastidious and cultivated persons. Agent* and canvassers in the interest of other Machines represent that the Wilson Machine is of no account, or say it is too cheap, and will soon wear out. The reas.n they so falsely represent the Wilson Machine is because their success depends upon it; for wherever the Wil son is introduced, no intelligent person will buy any other. The cost of labor and material in the Wilson, and all other Machines that are first-class, is about the same, and will not vary one dollar either way. Therefore, if the Wilson Sewing Machine Company can afford to sell their Machines at $55, all other large Companies could do the same. .. , The Wilson 8c wing Machine Company is not *o mercenary and grasping as some. It refu se* to join any rings or combinations for the purpose of putting up or keeping up prices. Concerning the merits of tbe Wilson Sewing Machine we offer the Machine itself, and in vite the severest mechanical and expert criticism. It is made from the very best quality of *teel and iron. Every part that is liable to wear is thoroughly case-hardened, and the steel tempered. It makes the Lock stitch, alike on both sides, Hems, Fells, Stitches, Tucks, Gathers, Binds, Braids, Cords, Puffs, Ruffles, etc., etc., and sews with equal facility from the finest of fabric* to Leather* Before buying a Sewing Machine, examine every one in the market. Then carefully ex amine the Wilson New Underfeed. Try it; test it. Then compare it to the representations made regarding it by it* enemic*, and you will lie perfectly satisfied that the Wilson New Underfeed Sewing Machine is the best in the world! The old and true adage is: “The best is the cheapest.” It does not (bean to pay the highest price to get the beat. Call and examine for yourself, and see that what we aay is no idle talk.
