A Ponied Dutchman.
One who does not believe in im
mersion for baptism was holding a
protracted, meeting, and one night
preached ou the subject of baptism.
In the course of his remarks he said
some believe it necessary to go down
into the water and come up out of it,
to be baptised, but this he claimed
to be fallacy, for the preposition
“ into ’’ of the Scriptures should be
rendered dillerently, as it does not
mean into, at all times. “Moses,” he
said, we are told, “ went up into the
mountain, and the Saviour was taken
into a high mountain, Ac. Now, we
do not supjtose that either went into
the mountain, but upon it. So with
going down into the water; it means
simply going down close by or near
to the water, and being baptized in
the ordinary way by sprinkling.”
lie carried this idea out fully, and
in duo season ami stylo closed his
discourse, when an invitation was
given to any one who felt so disposed
to rise and express their thoughts.
Q ite a number of the brethren arose,
and said that they were glad that
they had been present on this occa
sion, that they were well pleased with
the sound sermon they had just heard
and felt their soul greatly blessed.
Finally a corpulent gentleman ol
Teutonic extraction, a stranger to all,
arose and broke the silence that was
painful, as follows:
“ Mister Breacher, I ieh so glad
I vash here to-night, for I lias had
explained to my mint some things
that I never belief before. Oh! I ish
so glad dat into does not mean in at
all, but shust close py or near to, for
now I can pelieve manish tings what
I could never pelieve pefore. We
reat, Mr. Breacher, that Taniel vas
cast into the ten of lions and came
out alife. Now I never could pelieve
that, for the wild beasts shust eat
him right avoy; but now it is clear
to my mint. He vas shust closo by
or near to, and did not go into de
ten at all, Oh! I ieh so glad I vas
here to-night!
“ Again we reat that the Hebrow
children was vast into the firish fur
nace, and that always lookt like a
peeg story, too, for they votild havo
been bnmt tip; put it ish all plait) to
my mint now, for they were shust
cost close py or near to the firish
furnish. Oh, I vas so glat I vas
here to-night 1
“ And den, Mr. Breacher, it is said
dat Jonah vas cast into do whalesh's
pelly. Now I never could belief dat.
It nlwnys seemed to me to boa peeg
feesh story, put it ish all plain to my
mint now; he vas not takeu into
whalesh pelly at all, put shust
shumped on to his pnek and road
ashore. Oh, I vas glat I vas hero
to-night!
“And now Mr. Breacher, if you
will explain two more bashogcß of
Boripture I shall pe, oh I so happy
dat I vas hero to-night. One of dem
ish vore it saish de vicked shall" bo
cast into a lake dat purns uiit fire
and prirostotio always. O, Misthor
Breacher, shall I pe cast into a lake
dat purns rnit fire and primßtonu al
ways? O, Misther Breacher, shall I
pe cast into dat lake if I am vickcd ?
or shust close by or near to—near
enough to be comforter? O, I hope
so. Tell me, I vill be so glad I vas
here to-night.
“Hie other bassage is dnt which
raish, * blessed are those who do these
c-imniaudraents, that they may have
Tight to the tree of life, and enter in
through the gates iuto the city.* O,
tell me I shall get into the city, and
not to near to, shust near enough to
see vat I have lose, and 1 shall pe so
glad 1 vas here to-night.”
He sat down with the impression
made on many minds present, that it
wonld not do to take the Bible for
ouly what it dearly says.
