% /ntra anti Sararfwlb. mme-. , , =s= T* Ban Soil foe a Vikeyakd.— A correspondent of the Southern Fan* and Home says; “ Many in the Southern States would plant a vine yard and make a business of raising grapes for wiae, brandy, etc., but they are deterred from doing so by the failures they have heard of having been made by their friends and neigh bors, In uiue cases out of ten the cause of these failures has been the selection of a soil unsuited to the vine. The best soil I know—and I say so because in many years’ experi ence I never saw grape vines Ml on it—is a grayish loam with a red sub soil resting on a limestone substratum. Of course this should be well prepared by deep and thorough cultivation. Stiff, sticky lands will not do for vine yards. They may be improved slightly by mixing lime and ashes with them, but they can never be trusted to produce sound fruit. The aspect of a vineyard is more important than is supposed. A southern exposure is the best, next a western, next an eastern ; a northern is the worst. Preventive and Remedy for 1100 Cholera. —A correspondent of the Prairie Fanner, who has had large experience with swine, says the fol lowing are reliable: Preventive. —One peck wood ashes, four pounds salt, one pound each of black antimony, copperas and sul phur, quarter of a pound saltpetre. Pound, mix thoroughly and moisten enough to prevent waste; put in a trough in a dry place where the hogs can at all times eat as much as they please of it. I have strictly followed directions and had no cholora. Remedy. —lt is: Sulphur, two pounds; copperas, two pounds; mad der, two pounds; black antimony, half ponnd; arsonic two ounces. The quantity ia sufficient for one hundred bogs, and is mixed with slop enough for a few doses all round—a pint to each hog. Each time I tried this 1 had about fifty head, and not one died that was able to walk to the trough and drink. Swarming Bees. —A bee keeper give# the following plan to prevent a swarm of beta from getting away from the hi with the statement that after ten years’ experience be has never known it to fail ouoe: As soon as they show tho first symp toms of swarming stop up most of the outlets of the hive so as to force them to be a considerable time com mg out. The swarm being part made up in young bees, many of whom cannot fly well, and sb noth ing can be done by the swarm until all are out, they fly about in the air; by prolonging their exit the focble ones beoome tired, and finding their plans frustrated, they alight to re-ar range tbeir journey. If they can leave the old hive all at once, they care very little about alighting. Thrush. —l have successfully treated eases of thrush in the following man ner. Clean out the foot thoroughly; then take two'tablespoonfuls of salt, and saturate with creosote; then pack the open spaoes each side of the frog with the salt; cover with tar and fill with oakum to keep, the packing in plaoc; renew the dreseing in three days; keep the feet in a dry place. Thrash is breught on by allowing animals to stand in foul places.— Country Gentleman. Mr A correspondent of the Prairio Farmer writes that ticks may bo kept from sheep, snd even driven from them, by putting sulphur in thoir salt •wee a month. He keeps lies from hia cattle, horses and hogs by tho tame means. If lice trouble hogs, he puts sulphur in their food. If ohiok ens are troubled with them, he puts sulphur in the food, and sprinkles it lath* nest. The startling drawback on nearly all me dicinal agents has ever been that In their process of purgation and purification they have also debilitated the system. Toobviale (bis difficulty physicians have long sought for an agtnt that would purge, purifyand strengthen at one and the same time. Their research has at last been rewarded by a dis covery which fully realizes the fondest desires of the medical faculty, and which Is lastly regarded as the most important triumph that Pharmacy has ever achieved. This import ant desideratum is Dtr. Tutt’s Vegetable Liver Pills, which puriry the blood and remove all corrupt humors and unhealthy accumulations from the body, and yet produce no weakness or lassitude whatever, but, on the contrary, tone the stomach and invigorate the body during the progress of their operation. They unite the heretofore irreconcilable qualities of a strengthening purgative and a purifying lonic. Dr. Tutt’s Pills are the most active and searching medicine in existence. They at once attack the very root of disease, and their action is so prompt, that In an hour or two after they are taken the patient Is aware of their good effects. They may be taken at any time without restraint of diet or occupa tion; they produce neither nausea, griping or debility, and as a family medicine they have no rival. Price 25 cents a box.
