Treatment of Kerosene Lampo.

“IW, no lamps should ever be
filled after dark by the light of a can
: die. Always do this work after the
breakfast dishes are. put away, and
1 tiien not only fill them, bat wash the
chimneys; for if they are dim and
smoky, yon cannot expect to have a
hnght light. Take the chimney in
one hand and breathe through it;
ahen draw a large wisp of paper up I
ana dowtt-itj and all the blur will be
re roved. If the chimney is black
ewdavith lamp smoke, turn warmish
water through the tube, and then
wipe out with paper in the same style
“If the lamps are glfl|B, and they
become clouded with a deposit from
the kerosene, take lime water that i
milky with the lime, and shake it up
in the bmp. Do this with two diff
erent washings, and ill die deposit

A liltleichloride of lime, dissolved
in warm Wijter, and left in a lamp or
can which j>aa held kerosene, will de-

“Lamps! must be filled every morn
ing. rbisjis an imperative duty for
everjj housekeeper to perform; for as
the oil burns down in a tamp there is
created a highly inflammable ga*,
whioli gathers imperceptibly over the
surface, and as fast aa the oil is con
sumad thtsgas increases, so that when
the <jil is nearly out of the lamp, the
slightest jar of tbo table will set the
gas-i>n fire! an explosion follows in
stantaneously, and a bombshell would
jiot be more destructive, for its touch
is deathly. But if the oil is burned
only half way down in your lamp, the
gus is not of sufficient power to do
any injury. Therefore let me beg of
you to never defer the operation of
lamp filling to another day, but seo
yourself that it is done.”
vn^u, —Di Werth
rtrnbor, of Munich, advocates the fol
lowing treatment ;
“ First, tlie use of a preparation of
ammonia for neutralizing in the stom
ach tho excess of acid formed by the
fermentation of undigested milk; seo
ond, tea, which acts beneficially on
eerebral activity, and surely against
the drowsiness, and which, besides,
abates the sickness and diarrhoea.”
Dr. Wertheimber’s favorite pres
cription is: Decoction of root of sa
lcp, four grains; two ounoes water;
liquor ammonia with spirits of ani
seed, ten to twelve drops; syrup, one
draohm; tincture of opium, two to
three drops. One or two teaspoon
fuls every hour, acoordiug to the age
of the child. The quantity of tinc
ture of opium may be increased if
there are no symptoms.
The Dootor considers the disease
to be an advanced degree of previous
acute giistro enteritis.
To Tan a Sheep-skin.— “ One who
bae tried it, writes as follows:
‘ll any farmer wants a cheap
and convenient cushion to ride on,
let him take a sheep-skin as soon as
it is off the sheep, and scrape the
tU'j-h off, then lay it on a smooth place.
1 ulveme one pound of alum and one
of salt, cover with it the flesh Bide of
the skin, let it lie a week or two, and
k will be well tanned. They make
the best seat for the reaper, raker,
corn planter, and to throw on a horse
to ride from the field to the barn; and
if one should be oanght in a sudden
shower, they would answer for a pro
tection.”
ES?"* Clover has the singular prop
erty of being able to extract from the
atmosphere, without the aid of man
ure or stimulants, nitrogen sufficient
for its own proper growth and nour
ishment. The straw and roots of clo
ver oontain a large amount of nitro
gen, and these, when plowed down,
are therefore aa valuable to the next
crop sown as a copious supply of
guano.
Sobk Trboat.—To cure sore throat,
take the whites of two eggs and beat
’them in with two spoonfuls of white

MODE OF DRAWING.
There will he upon the stage two glass
wheels, the contents of which can be seen by
all the spectators. A committee of two citi
zens, in no way connected with the manage
ment, and of undoubted integrity, having
first counted and examined, will place in the
larger wheel 12,600 tickets, exactly alike,
and having printed numbers from 1 to 12,600,
corresponding to all the tickets sold. A sim
ilar committee, having first counted and ex
amined, will place in tubes precisely alike
the prizes, which are placed in the smaller
wheel. Roth wheels will then he turned un
til their contents are thoroughly mixed. A
boy under fifteen years, blindfolded, will then
draw from the larger wheel one of the 12,600
tickets, and holding it np in full view of the
spectators and auditors, its number will be
called by the crier appointed for this purpose,
so that all present may hear. The number
will then be passed to the committee of citi
zens, who will say whether the number has
been rightly called. It will then be passed
to a register, who will file it, and record it
upon a bock prepared for that purpose. A
boy of similar sge will then draw from the
smaller wheel one of the tubes containing a
prize, which will be opened and held up to
the view of the spectators and auditors. The
value of the real estate prize will then be
cried and passed to the committee, who, after
inspection, will give it to another register to
file and record. The prize thus drawn will
belong to the ticket bearing the number
drawn immediately before it. Thus this pro
cess Fill continue,' drawing first from the
large wheel containing the tickets, and then
from the small or prize wheel, until all the
tubes containing the prises are drawn. An
accurate record of the above will be kept oft
file, certified to by the committee of disinter
ested citizens officiating.
The prise* below three hundred dollars In
value are approximations, and will be deter
mined and paid as follows: The numbers of
all the tickets sold being considered in a cir
cle, numerically formed, and having the
highest number, 12,600, and the lowest, 1,
brought together, then whatever number in
thla circle may be by lot determined to be
entitled to the capital prise of $25,000. will
be taken ass centre, on each side of which
the next three hundred numbers in numeri
cal order will be counted for the ten dollar
pTiaen, thus making on the two sides of the
capital the six hundred nearest numbers,
each of which will be entitled to a real estate
prixe of ten dollars. All the tickets drawing
larger priaes wU( l>e excluded, and the circle
extended to include nix hundred on both aides
of the capital—being three hundred on each
ride—it.being the purpose of the management
not to duplicate prises.
Mokiy— All money received from sales of
tickets will be deposited in bank immediate! v
