How to Plant a Tree.
When planting, don’t dig a hole
like a bowl.cistern, hut dig it just as
deep os tho soil is, and no deeper;
make the bottom of it one-third larger
than the top, and loosen up the very
bottom. Then, as the tree is planted,
throw in first au iuoli of real good,
fresh, rich soil; set the tree, holding
It with one hand while on your knees
you spread its roots carefully with
the other; let tho assistant drop the
dirt in upon tho roots as ho would if
he hod a sieve, and, as it is dropped
in, do you who hold tho tree on your
bended knees, work every root care
fully out straight on a level lino with
the point or junction of it with the
main stems, use tho fingers outspread
in mingling the fine dirt with the
roots, and be careful that not an air
space is left at the bottoms, and also
that the earth on tho lower roots is
packed hardest or tightest of any.
As you reach tho upper roots only,
see that each root is surety surrounded
with earth, and then let the last four
inches of earth bo sprinkled on with
spado or shovel, without pressure of
foot or anything else—don’t oven flat
It with the shovel, and be sure to
keep your feet off, for every pressure
will disturb tho natural position of
tho roots below.
To Color Floors Walnut Tint.—
Apply with paint brush or piece of
rag raw linseed oil mixed with burnt
umbor. When dry, apply a coat of
boilod linseed oil without color. The
quantity of linseed oil depends on the
wood—some requiring much more
color to make a given tiut. A small
quantity of the mixture, well rubbed
in, has the best effect, and drios the
soonest.
To Wash Windows.— Spread a
Coating of water and whiting; when
dry, rub off with paper or old silk
rag. This method is especially con
venient whore splashing should be
avoided, and in cold weather. Silver
can bo polished in the same manner
with prepared ohalk.
0“ The Patrons of Husbandry in
the Southern Slates number over
2,500 granges, and are rapidly in
creasing. This'is about one-third of
all tho subordinate grangos in the
United Slates.
