The Governor has authorized Dr. Flewellen, the receiver, to bid a mil lion and a half for the State, at the sale of the Macon and Brunswick road. Two men in Newton county killed 36 partridges the other day. A Covington boy recently caught seven ’coons in one tree. West Point has received 1,810 bales of cotton since Ist September. Rockmart is boasting off"a corn cob shaped like a human hand. Brimberry, white, is now the only Radical in the senate. Ten new stores have been built in West Point in the last year. A negro near Lawtonville recently committed suicide by hanging him self to a tree. His wife had deserted him a few hours previously. The gin-house of Mr. T. B. Law son, of Stewart connty, containing six bales of cotton, was recently burnt by an incendiary. Greene and Decatur counties went democratic at the late election, for the first time since the war. The gin-house of Mr. 11. Markham, of Talbot county, containing eight bales of cotton, together with a grist and saw mill, were recently burnt. It is rumored that Gen. Bethune is running as the Radical candidate for Congress front the 4th district. Romo claims a negro girl who weighs only ninety pounds, but wears a No. 13 shoe, A Hancock county negro is run ning for Congress in the Bth district in opposition to Hon. A. 11. Stephens Dalton has two colored schools, each having 100 scholars. Judge Weems, of the Macon city court, recently lined a man SSO and anal a for whipping his w ife. A rbjhl-- oous verdict. lion, A. 11. Ste[>hens is a remarka ble Democrat. In a recent speech at Augusta he said Grant had done his duty, and saw no reason why he should not be elected for a third term. In Thomas county several of the leading colored men worked nobly for the democratic cause, and 150 voted that ticket. Judge Erskine lately sent three men to jail at Rome, aud lined them $2,000, for illicit distilling. In Meriwether county, the other day, Jimmie Almau, aged 12, picked 270 pounds of cotton, and, the same day, S. S. McLendon picked 381 pounds, and Coolie Flemister, colored, 438 pounds. The Columbus hospital, for the first time since the war, is without a pa'i.nt. The gin-house of A. J. Rowe, in Meriwether county, containing eight hales of cotton, was recently burnt by an incendiary. Loss SI,OOO. Mrs. It. T. Simons, of Columbus, lately slipped and fell while cooking dinner, and displaced the bones of one of her shoulders. A little son of J. W. Burdett re cently died very suddenly in West Point of croup, 110 eat supper as usual, aud died before 12 o’clock. The Cutbbert Appeal says that out of the 1,093 votes received by Air. Tuinlin, “ independent ” candidate for Representative in Randolph county, nearly 900 were given by negroes. The gin-house of Dr. W. A. , Strother, of Mitchell county, was burned recently, together with seven bales of cotton. The Georgia Grange claims that its direct trade union will have shipped 100,000 bales of cotton from Savan nah to Liverpool by November. The State University commenced the fall term with 172 students, of whom nearly one half are new. A negro boy, sixteen years old, picked 350 pounds of cotton upon a plantation near Covington in one day. The Savannah Advertiser says that the Grangers have sent about one hundred bales of cotton to that port to be sent to Liverpool. A Berrien county man has a sow which sports five legs. A cowardly Sparta man named John J. Berrjpsbot a negro twice the other day without provocation. The Democratic mnjoiity in Geor gia is estimated at 75,000. Matters in General. A mackerel has been caught at Halifax, N. S, which was nine feet long and weighed over 500 pounds. As the rafters of a house in Char lotte, N. C, wi re being braced, on the 14th, one of them fell on N. G. Allison, a carpenter, ind threw him to the ground, a distance of fifty feet. Ilis neck and skull were bro ken, and he died instantly. Mr. Ross, whose child was kid napped some time ago, is confined to his bed, and is bereft of reason. A freight train on the and Eufaula railroad lately went through a trestle fifteen feet high. The engine passed over safely, but seven cars were demolished. A train hand was killed and the engineer slightly injured. A defalcation of SI,OOO is repot ted fn the custom-house at Havana. 11. Emanuel & Cos., the largest cigar importers in Canada, have failed. Liabilities $400,000. Gaza way B. Lamar, who died re cently in New York, bequeathed one hundred thousand dollars for the erection at Savannah of a home for the aged and infirm negroes. A San Francisco paper notes the destruction by fire of a large number of flour mills in that State during the past few weeks. The latest novelty in fashion that comes to us relates to visiting cards. When the upper right hand corner is turned down it signifies that you have called in person; when the lower right hand, that you have merely sent your card with compli ments ; when the upper left hand, that your call is congratulatory; when the lower left hand, consolatory. The Pennsylvania railroad claims the largest locomotive in the.country. It has twelve driving wheels and weighs seventy-five tons. Miss Carrie Ballard, of Avoca, lowa, while on her way to school in Cincinnati was frightened by some men on the railroad train trying to flirt with her to such an extent that she locked herself in the w'ater-closet and would not come out. When the train reached Peoria the door was forced open and the young lady found to be insane. The other Jay when a man at Paris, Ky., discovered a lire and yelled “ vvhoop l” thirty or f rty citi zens pulled out revolvers, “ whooped ” at him, and began dodging behind hitching-posts to get the first shot in on him. A bov iu Hudson, N. Y., while digging for fish-worms, a day or two ago, unearthed his grandfather’s jack knife, which had lain iu the ground over sixty years. Asa result of the recent eruptions of Etna a fissure three miles long has been opened on the northern side of the mountain, in the course of which several minor craters arc formed. Cotton picking is new in full blast in Fresno county, California. In most instances Chinese laborers are pressed into the service, that being the only species of help obtainable. The crops are turning out fully as well as antic ipated. Few even among the thriftiest Scotchmen have made a penny go further than a firm of brass and cop pei; wire manufacturers, who recently drew a copper coin into 2,700 feet— more than half a mile—of wire. Railroad cars are henceforth to be supplied with Bibles by the Ameri can Bible Society. Mrs. Barclay, a widow of Presi dent Van Buren, died suddenly at Newport, a few days ago. A Paris retail dry goods and no tion store employs a force of 1,300 clerks and 215 porters, and its trade requires, for proper transaction, the use of 35 wagons and 83 horses. All the employes dine at the establish ment, and a number of them are lodged there also. About twenty-four thousand peo ple are entirely destitute in Angora, and will require maintenance through out the winter. They have found at Herculaneum the bust of a woman in solid silver. It weighs fifty-eight pounds. American sewing machines are ex tensively used in Jerusalem, Damas cus, Aleppo and other cities of the Orient. Mark Twain has refused thirty thousand dollars for fifty lectures. A gentleman living near La Grange has a negro woman on his place, who has bad nine children in tiie past 5 years—four pairs of twins and a single one. H.
