There had been a separation be tween Squire Smith and his second wife and we understand that she had agreed to return to his home on con dition that he drove off his children. This he started to do, and while whip ping one of his daughters at the time stated, his son interfered, and draw iu<r a pistol, shot twice at his father, oue ball passing between, the arm and side of his sister, and the other taking effect in the head and fracturing the skull of his father. Dr. Cameron was sent for at once, and is attending the case. The son who committed this dread ful deed is some 23 years of age. lie left soon afterwards. The father is over 60. The above are briefly the facts of this sad affair as reported on the street. The result of the late election in Harris county proved that* the white people were determined to he free and untrammelled. *| i-♦- Tiie Eclui.se. — Don’t forget the eclipse of the moon to morrow night. It will be total, and well worth sec incr. It will commence about mid night, he total about half past one, and end about two o’clock. A Storm.— There was quite a storm here last Friday night. The rain fell in torrents, with some wind, thunder and lightning. We learn that the blacksmith shop at Nance's o i the N. & S. road, and some fences in that locality, were blown down. The wind was not strong enough here to do any damage. • —■ i Q— lyThe members of the Baptist church at this place will meet on Sat urday before thfl first Sunday in nex; month, to select a pastor to succeed the late Rev. M. J. Wellborn. Superior Court. —Court adjourned last Fiiday evening. Several cases were continued, owing to the illness of Judge Johnson on Friday. We are unable to notice, this week, any of the cases disposed of, as the party wh > promised us the report, is absent. Finis Cotton. — Mr. J. M. McCants sends us the top half of a cotton stalk, about three feet long, which has on it lifcy well developed bolls. It is of the “Cluster” variety, and is as heavily fruited as it well could be without breaking the stalk. Ed. Visitou.— We regret to pee, in your last issue, a card from Mr. 11. W. Pius, our present efficient County Treasurer, in which he states that he will not be a candidate for re-election to that office. We beg the gentleman to reconsider his determination. The country needs just such men to serve her; and we can assure him, if he will allow his name to be run, that it will be complying with the earnest desire of Many Voteus. Woods on Fire. —The woods on the mountains near town were on fire several days last week, until the rain put it out. The fire originated from the carelessness of ’possum hunters. Besides the trouble given our country friends iu “lighting lire” to keep their fences and otit-houses from being burnt, at this season of the Vear these fires burn up all the mast and what little grass there is, and make it that much harder on stock during the winter. We think the legis’ature should pass a bill making these hunters responsi ble for any damage that may result hom their carrying fire. Wool Cotton.—Several persons have seen the wool cotton sent to us last week by Mr. Pate, and say that J t looks just like wool. We have it here yet for inspection. It certainly is hard to tell from wool. NEW SHOES.
