Cjjr /arm aafc Hsßifjiifo. To Clean Blanket*. The Boston Jwurnal of CheHMutiy gives the feUowmg iwethwl of clean ing blankets: Put two large tea spoonfuls of borax and a pint bowl of soft soap into a tab of eoUi waiter. When dissolved, pat in a pair of blankets, and let them remain over night. Next day rub oat, rinse thor oughly in two waters, and hang them to dry. Do net wring them, list this is not the only domestic ose to which borax may be pat. Borax is the best cockroach exterminator yet discovered. This insect has a pecu liar aversion to it. As the salt is perfectly harmless to human beings, it is much preferred for this purpose to the poisononsirebetance commonly used. Borax is valuable for the laun dry ; use one pound to about tea gal lons boiling water, and you need only one half the usual allowance of soap. For laces, cambrics, etc., use an or dinary quantity of this powder. It will not injure the texture of cloth in the learft. For cleansing the hair, nothing is better than a solution ol borax-water. Wash afterwards with pure water, or it leaves the hair too stiff. Borax dissolved in water is an excellent dentrifice, or tooth-wasb. A Pointed Hint. —A story is told of a couple of farmers who lived not a very great distance apart, one of w hom was noted for being very pen urious. One day his neighbor eslled upon him while he was esting dinner, but instead of asking him to sit down to the table with him, be kept on eating and talking, just as though the visitor bad not a mouth in bis head. “Well, what is the news, neighbor Brown f *’ “Nothing much.’* “No news up your way, eli?” he still helping himself to his good dinner while Ids neighbor looked on with anxiety and appetite. “Well, yes, now that I think on’t, there is just a grain of news: Mr. Jones’ cow lias got five calves,” re plied the visitor. “ Five calves t I never heard of such a thing. Why, what the dickens does the fifth one do while the other four are sucking P ” “ Why, he stands and looks on like a dumb fool, just as I am doing now.” “ Oh, ah! Hannah, put on another plate.” To Cleanse the Scalp.— ln a piut buttle put a spoonful of olivo oil and add two ounces of beHt spirits of am monia or hartshorn; shake. Then mix with three ounces of alcohol, and, when thoroughly mixed, fill the bottle with sell water. Remember to put in the ingredients in the order named, •or you will have “stuff” and no chemical union at all. To apply, take a spoonful or two with a little •warm water; dip a sponge or rag in and wet tlve scalp thoroughly ; now Tinse off in plenty of wairn water, and you will be surprised at the amount of dirt, though you may have thought your head perfectly clean. For the heads < f young infants it is just the thing, as it instantly rcmovi s the dirty scurf without pain or trou b'e. It should be rather weaker for a babo than for an adult. To Kill Flier.— l am told by one who lifts tried it that strong tea of quassia, sweetened with molasses, will kill flirt, and has tho advati tng of not being a deadly poison. It is said, too, that horses washed with a tea made of quassia will not be tormented by flies. It can be bought at any drug store, and it is worth trying, if it will abate the fly nuisance any. To Bake Ham.—Most people boil han. It ie much better baked, it baklift* right. Soak for an hour in clean water, and wipe dry. Next epread ifc all over with thin butter, aud then put it in a deep dish with under It to keep it out of the gravy. When it is fully dono, take off the skin and matters crusted on the flesh side and set it away t> cool. iy Chignon is dead. The great deity of the feminine toilet ie no more. Paris has given it up for the sake of economy. It was very costly. Every year there were lakeu into Paris 110,000 pounds of human h: ir in a “raw” or unworked state— worth fOBO.OOO, and to be made into chignons. Now all that money ran be sp> nt in some other nonsense. tfT" Major Bindford, Secretary of the order, informs the Galveston News that there are 630 Granges in Texas with a membership of 21,420 mem bers, about one-fifth of whom arc ladies. !iT Why is a baby like a sheaf of w heat ?
