of a paper read before tlio Agricul

In April taat. It will be found par-

The coat of manufacturing No. 20

may Iks remarked that the records of

profit* that may I* made by spinning
varus at Ute very time that the North

penaea. Tins arguments iu favor of
wpiuuing apply with equal force in
«hvor of weaving. A cotiou mill with
* capacity of 40*0 spindles, with find

We have no doubt It would l>e the

Such is the piessure for public office,
hardly a Government Office holder in
the laud, however snugly lie may be
cusconevd, is safe in assuring himself
that lie will retain hi* position long.
There are too many for the good of
themselves and the Government at
this time having claim* upon “Uncle
B—."
There it an indication that there
will lie many changes iu the Internal
Revenue service very soon. It •wins
that many of the OflU-u seeker*, much
to the discomfiture of many Office
holders, have at their respective homes
been making themselves useful durtug
the past few weeks in ferreting out
frauds practiced upon the Govern
ment.
OOLD EXCITEMENT.
The Gold Excitement iu New Vork
on Friday, created no little interest
Imre among all parties, and partieu
larlv among the small Gold Jobbers
great eonatvrnation prevailed. So in
tent wore some of tho banks here to
improve the golden opportunity to
dabble in gold, that one, thinking
gold would rise still higher, ventured
to pay os high as 1.55—8ut the policy
of Secretary B. was unknown here—
A few minutes after, from the effect
of the Secretary's order to sell four
millions of Gold the next day, as
announced by tin. 1 wire*, down it came
to 1.33. The Banker who hail Just
au hour !*fore paid 1 65 for Gold, 1
understand was heard to say, “I'm
served right, a man is a d—d fool to
*|Mu-ulale in Gold outaide of New
York.”
CLERK*.
The Clerks in the Treasury Depart"
ment are creating quite a seusatiou
over the recent stringent orders of
Assistant Secretary Richardson, eom
(telling them to work their hour* if
they expect to get paid for them—
The “Daily Morning News, lately
stalled,the “One Center,”seems lobe
their organ, through which they vent
their spite on their “Lord and Master
Richardson,” ‘a* they style him.''
They claim thal the same rule he
forces upon them, should be applied
to himself; and that since he h&affiuttc
to Massachusetts to attend
duties, he should I*- docked. No one
will deny the justice of their conch*
sioil. He is now drawiug two salaries,
one from our Government, and the
other from his State.
Ct'BA.
Whatever our Govern—nt under
the existing Neutrality laws may deem
proper to do in the Cuban affair, the
big scare attempted to be made by
Kngland ami France out of the pre
sumption that Sjiain will resent the
so-called indignities thrust at her by
us through Minister Sickles, does not
seem to disturb the authorities here
any more than it has the people gen
erally throughout the country. Our
Government assumes the position with
£pa:u, »r U always taken by the
Mastiff over the belligerent “Whiffit.”
aoi no home to vote.
Both IVuuxylvania and Ohio State
Associations, have been busy for the
past few days enrolling the name* of
the clerk* belonging respectively to
their States, who desire "to go home
to rote. The associations have made
arrangement* for half frge tickets.
The Secretary of the Ohio Associa
tion, informs me that two Hundred
and fifty from his -State have already
re|K>rted for a “home ticket,” and
some more nre expected to l*e heard
from. If it fie & fact that Ohio it
represented in the Departments by
that number, 1 fear that some of the
States arc left out in the cold.
THE general LAN!! OTTICE
has just received advices from the

townships in the eastern part of Col

of the I’latte, covering an aggregate
area of two hundred and twenty nine
thousand four hundred lugi. These
lands #re chiefly stfrk-nl
