Qawkinnville was visited, on Tues
day afternoon last, by a storm which
exceeded iu violence anything known
here for many years. It was not of
Jong iteration, but the lightning was
aery sharp, and the wind blew in tre
mendous gusts, while it lasted. Nu
merous fine old shade trees, which hail
withstood the blasts of years, were
leveled with the ground, and many
fences, with a few lightning-rods and
tops of chimneys, blown down. The
smoke-stack at the Factory fell witli
a crash, and a corner pillar of the old
hotel was blown out.
We learn that the lightning struck
the Factory, but without damage, as
rods had fortunately been put np there
* few weeks ago.
Iu the height of the storm, it was
reported that a house had been blown
the inmates. Several
of our citizens repaired to the scene,
and rescued from the ruins the only
two occupants at the time, Miss Ellen
Mitchell and Mrs. Glover—the former
slightly bruised, aud the latter seri
ously.
We are told that the house was oc
cupied by some ten or twelve em
ployes of the Factory, and had they
not been absent at work, the results
might have been much more serious.
The building was situated on Jack
sou street, near the depot, and is a
complete wreck. It is owned by Mr.
A. Y. Carroll, and is said to have
been miserably constructed —uot hav
ing a mortise about it.
We hear of no damage outside of
town, and believe it extended no dis
tance from here.
A collection has been taken up for
the injured, and a sullicicnt amount
raised to again start them in house
keeping—most of their little all hav
ing been destroyed by the falling of
the^kouse.
ruladil C*>uniy Bible Society.
TUe annual meeting of the Society
mas held at the Methodist Church, in
this town, last Sunday afternoon, at
4 o’clock.
Religious exercises by Ilcv. Mr.

W;u. M. Oliver, President, in the
chair.
The Secretary being absent, Denis
W. P. Roully was elected Secretary,
pro tern.
The report of the Treasurer and
Depositary was read and ado|>tcd. It
showed the amount on hand at the
first of the year to be $45 65; received
during the year for books sold S6B 75;

$45 65; expenses for the year, includ
ing freight, etc., sl4 15; value of books*
on hand at the beginning of the year,
$149 10; value of books sold during
the year, S6B 75; value of books do
nated, $1 75; value of books on hand
at the close of the year, S7B 60;
amount due to the parent society,
$99“ 99. Three destitute families were
found and supplied, and Sabbath and
other schools, two.
The following officers were then
elected by acclamation for the ensu
ing year: C. M. Bozeman, President;
W. M. Oliver, Vice President; F. H.
Bozeman, Corresponding Secretary;
