Alligators vs. Sturgeons
The people of Kaston Pa., are having a
lively time just now, in training and driv
ing Sturgeons to pleasure Boats. Now,
tit is may lie anew and rare sport to the
Kastoniana, but llie use of Sturgeons for a
like pur|mse was carried to great jierfcc
tion here in Hawkinsvillc, many years ago,
by die lovers of aqueous s|iorts and pas
time. lam informed by an old and relia
ble citizen (Dr. F.) dial lie has seen as
many as three pairs of Sturgeons harness
ed to as many batlcaux, at our ferry land
ing, at one time ; and lias seen young men
witli their sweethearts taking pleasure
rides on the river witli them.
Dr. F. says that these “ttqiifoii* Stroll"
were easily tired, and soon became sullen ;
and after a few trials it was decided dial
die Sturgeon was more valuable os an
anchor for a boat than as a woUnc /metr.
But, as a Southern sport, Uiere is nr tiling
equal to a ride on our beautiful Octnuigec,
with a bevy of beautiful, laughing, romp
ing young girls, on an elegant Boat,
drawn by a pair of NobU Alligator *.
The Alligator lias bottom and speed
and being amphibious, when be returns
from an aqueous excursion, takes the
Boat and Cargo of love and beauty, out on
high and diy land. Yankees may drive
on their Sturgeons, but we prefer Alligators

The Killing of Cnpl. Lewis H.
Kenan.
As Capt. Kcftan tfnd his father, Col.
Augustus H. Kenan, were generally
known throughoutt Georgia, and as
many, no douht, desire to know the
particulars of the late tragedy result
ing In the death of Captain Kenan,
we give the following facts, wfdcfe we
believe are entirely reliable:
Capt. Kenan and Mr. Strother,
who had previously been friends, had
a difficulty of a purely private char
acter several months ago. About six
weeks ago, Capt. K., having heard
that Mr. Strother had threatened to
kill him, procured a double barrel
gun and shot at S. twice, neither
charge taking effect. Friends inter
fered, nnd Mr. Strother denying that
he hail ever made such a threat, both
parties were induced to sign an in
strument in writing, pledging them
selves not to renew the difficulty or
interfere with each other, except to
have their differences adjusted in
court.
Messrs. Strother and Kenan lived
within two huudred yards of each
other and on the outskirts of the
city. They were both seen aliout
sunset, Monday evening, 3d inst.,
going toward their homes. Strother
was on the side of the street on which
both lived. Kenan had two or three
buudles of goods ill his arms which
ho was carrying home. On the way
Strother stopjied at the inm.se of a
relativo, and got a rifle which he had
left there. When near the Executive
Mansion, Kenan took his usual patli
across the street to his house, nnd in
■doing so was approaching Strother,
and when within some fifteen or twen
ty feet, Strother leveled the gnu and
fired, the bill passing through Ken
an's chest, killing him almost instant
ly. He did not live more than fifteen
or twenty minutes. As lie fell he,
looking ut Strother, said, “John,
what did you do this for?”
If Kenan gave any other cause for
tlic shooting than is given above, we
lealn that it did not come out at
the coroner’s investigation. Strother
has not liccn arrested, ns lie cunnot
be found; but his friends say he will
appear for trial at lire proper time.

A few Words in ilic l.nd c*.
Mmy la lies, particularly mothers nurs
ing, complain of a lived, listless Iceling, or
complete exhaustion, on ari-ing in the
morning. On lire wife nnd mother de
volves the responsibility ol regulating the
duties of tlie household. Her cares are
numerous, nnd the mental as well ns the
physical powers nre frequently culled into
requisition. She often finds her slightest
occupation a weary task and existence a
burden, while at the same time sin: lias no
regular disease. Hostetler's Stomach Bit
ters, if resorted to at this period, will prove
an unfailing remedy for this annoying las
situde. The effects of tins potent agent
are soon seen in the rosy elicek and elas
tie step of the head of the family, as with
restored health and renewed spirits she
takes her accustomed place in the family
circle. If this friend in need be regularly
used, those depressing symloms will never
be complained of, nnd not only would las
situde not lie experienced, hut many dis
eases following its advent lie avoided. As
a medical agent it lias no equal, while its
pleasing flavor ami healthful effects have
made it a general favorite. It is free from
all properties calculated to Impair the sys
tem, and its operations are at once mild
soothing and efficient. All who have lined
the Bitters attest its virtues and commend
it to use.
