[COMMUNICATED]
The Efllaghuni Murder.
Edkn Ga.
January 15th1876
Mr. Editor:
Thinking a line from
our section would Ic acceptable
to your many we address
you this communication. Farm
ers are preparing for planting, and
if we are blessed with a good sea
son the harvest will certainly be
large. Wo are needing rain very
much, especially, for the Oat Crop.
Avery sad occurrence took
place near the 22 mile post on the
C. E. It. on yesterday. Mrs. Isa
bel Cochran and little daughter,
Myra, about eight years old were
brutally murdered by robbers,
lx iafc found dead at their resi
dence, In the house abou' 12 o’
clock, ' hey were each shot in the
head by a pistol ball. Never be
fore have I witnessed anything so
sad. Mr. Cochran is au overseer
on the C. It. I!, mid none were at
home but the mother and daugh
ter and .iii infant child, which was
found by the side of its deceased
sister, and no doubt if this little
infant could tell what it saw, the
murderers would certainly be cap
tured and punished, hut this was
the only living being who saw the
terrible tragedy committed. To
day an inquest was held, and the
jury brought in a verdict charg
ing one Frince Roberson, p. c.
and Paul Campbell, p. c. of hav
ing committed the murder. The
evidence is only circumstantial,
but Ihe parties are placed in pris
on, and I truly hope that the fu
ture will-bring forth new evidence,
lorthe perpetrators of this awful
deed,do richly deserve the pun
ishment of the law. The suspic
ion is strong against these two ne
groes, Jbufc I to en
sure Conviction. Tho citizens are
aroused to a sense of their duty,
and nothing will be spared to
convict the perpetrators. Indeed
this sad calamity is long to be re
membered by the inhabitants of
this community.
Itespoctfully

Georgia Legislature.
From our exchanges and from
private letters we have formed
tin opinion that this department
of our government is—wlnit can
not be said ot every Legislature*--
hard at'work. The amount of lo
cal bills already introduced will
give employment to these Solons
for the allotted forty days.
The bills of general interest
comprise principally the calling
of a convention, amending the
homestead laws, and taxing dogs.
Among the local bills affecting
this section, wo notice the follow
ing :
By Tootle of Tattnall—To create
a board of county commissioners
for Tattnall.
By DeLoach of Bryan—To re
lieve T.W. Davis, late Tax Col
lector of Bryan.
By Bacon (colored) of Liberty—
To create a court for the ratifica
tion of contracts for Liberty; to
make it a misdemeanor to plant a
crop in Liberty County without a
fence; and to establish free
•
schools for six months in the year.
The Senators and Represenla
lives honored the 10th by adjourn
ing, and each gave a half day’s
pay-to the Lee Memorial Firm.
Hon. Oincinnattus Peeples
was confirmed as Judge of the
Atlanta Circuit to supply the va
cancy occasioned by the resigna
tion of Judge Hopkins. Judge
A. Bate was reappointed to the
Ccoaei Circuit, and Thos. Eason
confirmed as Solicitor General.
Judge Richard H. plarke is to
presided over the Atlanta City
Court.
The indications are that the
convention bill will be passed by
large majority.

The bonded debt of the State of
the Slate of Georgia is $8,005,500.
The Tredegar Iron Works of
Richmond have suspended. Six

Savannah honored the 10th by
a grand military display.
It seems that Spain does not
intend to take every thing which
Mr. Grant has to say in the way
of insult, and that she will take
war rather than intervention in
her domestic affairs.
Blackshear is to have anew pa
per soon to be known as tiie
South East Georgian.
The latest thing in tho line of
frauds is “crooked” vinegar.
Gen. Gordon—and he is gener
ally found on the right side—is
heartily in favor of the Centen

Gen. Beauregard has, through
Gen. Gordon, applied for amnesty.
Anew paper, called the Farm

has been begun at Griffin by S. N.

first and fifteenth of each month;
subscription, $1.50 per annum.
L. Q. O. Lamar, the great M ss

the Senate.
Mr. Stephens’ condition is some

There are in the State of Geor

Virginia has declined to vote
ten thousand dollars to defray the
expenses of a commissioner to tlie
Centennial. Her action in this
matter is said to be attributable to
Blaine’s Amnesty speech.
The Woman’s Suffrage Conven

27th.
It seems that the Federal auth
orities at Savannah have been
opening the English mail bags
from Nassau, and the Nussau pa

According to a statistician, it
