Monroe’s Rotary Harrow.
Eds. Southern Cultivator :—I
lihv# gained much valuable informa
tion from the eorrespeudr nt* of your
journal, in relation to the new and
improver! implements being inttodu
oßd„itnd I fs#l that I shou.d be dori
led in my duty to mv tallow farmers,
diil 1 not puLludy appro
bation of Mouroe’s Rotary Ilairow.—
I saw this implement on exhibition
at the Siato Fair at Manon two years
ago, and I uaa under the iinpreaaioo
that it would dog in very grass
lands. This fall, being about to put
iu a field of rye for winter grazing. I
wanted something bettor to cover the
seed and level the ground than the
scooter or turn shovel plow. !u look
ing around I found one of these bar
low*, and determined to try it, clog
or tin dog. I had broken up a field
of very rongh gras* land with a turn
pbovv, and whon I got the new imp!*
nient h"ine, I sowed it down in rye,
hitched two mule* to the harrow, and
stinted on the outside edge of the
field, and went round and round un
til I came to the centre.
I have ever found it a hard matter
to get mv workmen to try to use an
implored implement. They invaria
bly pronounce against thuw before
living. In this case, my man Bob
swore tilde was “no use in putting
that crap looking tiling among
all them slumps and grata roota—it
would take him ull the time to dean
it, and he would break it poasing
against a stump the first lick.” I
said to him, “Never mind Bob, hitch
on your mules, take the outside track,
go round and round, go as Bear the
stumps as you can without snagging,
an ! lot us see bow it will do.” The
team start, I follow in the rear, one,
two, three furrows mound—not a
word spoken. The fourth furrow
was quite stumpy. Bob steered dote
to the stump, 1 thought iu Lope* to
break the harrow, but the levolviug
motion threw it oil, and went round
liko a top. Tlio grass roota were ta
ken up, torn iu pieces, whirled around
and scattered. Th# ground over
which the implement had passed,
was left as smooth as a house lloor.
I called to > V to stop —“Well, what
do you think of the harrow.” “Think
of it ? Wh v 1 am “if this aint the
first naw fangled machine I ever seed
I believed iu.” lie went ahead and
finished the field of six acres before
night, leaving w smoother and in
better order than any field I ever
. planted, with four time* the labor.—
The rye is now up, and is as even as
a grass meadow. The harrow is nev
er turned in going round corners or
at the ends of rows, as '.lie shaft
turns on a pivot in the centre, and
the harrow can bo pulled any way.
The manner in which it revolves it
perfectly aiuiple, and if the manufact
urer of this implement (who is a
troorgian) would advertise in the ag
riculturnl papers, he would surely sell
many of them. I would not, could I
not procure another, take five hundred
dollars for mine.
