FARM and household.
From r a Rural 1 urulir an.
Fowor of the Soil to Itetaiu
Manures.
Few cultivators of the »oil eeent
to be fully'aware of tit# wAwd.rful
power of even a loose an<l light soil
to retain plant food that has been
artificially npp iod. I fotind a strik
ing instance of it a few year? since.
, The place on which l settled some
thiily teats ago was new fresh land,
save some ten or twenty acres which
had heett pailiallv cleared and cutu
t a ted. lids l»v injudicious culture
had been neaily exhausfed, but as
the labor of clearing new land wa*
great to me then, I planted the oU
field. The soil was :i light Rami, and
hai IN' repaid for the planting and
culture. 1 notice there was about
half an acre oil a steep hill side which
prod nerd well. . 1 cultivated this land
for several years, and that bill-side
aiwais produced well. A stranger
passing one day stopped and inqttir.-
ed win* lived here, and remarked that
he settled this p’aee twenty jems
ago,but tint iosing his wife lie
became dis.-omaged and sold out.
As in l was about fearing, 1 asked him
what lie La I done, to that hill side
to make it produce so mueli better
than the other land when it looked
poon-r and more barren. fTe implied
that there he had his cow pen. it
had been fifteen years since his cattle
trod the land, and vet as poor as it
looked it produced well.
It is now thirty-two years since
that piece of land was cow pened and
it shows a marked diflfeerenco in its
products from the soil around it.
I am often asked is guanno any
benefit the second year? I answer
unhesitatingly that it is. Two yeais
ago 1 planted a j iece of land in
siigir eiuic and manured heavily with
guano in drill. I made a tine crop
of cane, and in the fall planted the
same piece of land in wheat without
marine. As the wheat grew, the
lows where the cane was p'anted
showed a marked difference over the
other portions of the field, and the
yield was double. Two years ago
1 planted a field in Norway oat#;
used Pacific, guano and bone-dust.
Last year 1 planted the snuc field in
cotton, using two hundred pounds
of I‘acifio guano tothem-re. From
some cause, which I cannot compre
hend, tbe crop was a comparative
'failure. This season l planted the
same field in my prolific, corn, w thout
manure of any kind, and the yield
has been such as to satisfy me that
the soil had letaincd a good portion
of th 5 plant food contained in the
guano, and that the corn got the
benefit of it. This field produced
on an average (hittv bushel’? to the
"acre. TlltlftHHjtL&tdds joining-inine
the same light land, with the same
culture, that hare not produced five
bushel's Ui the acie. There may be
something in the variety of corn, but
not all; on other fields that ha I not
been prevously guanoed, the yield
was not more than half.
Thus, it is very plain to see, that
manures judiciously applied are not
exhausted bv the first crop, nor do
the rains wash them away, or leach
them through. If tl.e lain washed
the fertilizing properties of the Roil
a wav, the earth would long ago have
been a barren waste. It is bad cul
ture that wastes the soil, not plants,
Thin 1 am satisfied of by many years
of practical experiment. I have been
tlrii tv-two years cultivating the ptney
woods land I live on, and it produces
better tb s year than the first year i
planted it. ' Cuts. A. Prabody.

To one gallon of lard, before it
