S ARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
The J£nrni and the Man.
It tn*v he important to consider
wVicli is first and most important,
the man or his farm. Its w certain
that the farm, aslatul and water, rock
And wood existed L-fore it did; hist
it mar not hare been » fartn till he ;
made it so. If he is the maker of
the farm, he is evidently tlie most
important—f«>r the thing made can
not well he superior to its maker.—
The maker must hold tlie fust rank. ;
But it strikes ns that there is a ,
mutual relationship between the man j
an ! his farm which should he recog
nized, and which makes each patty
dependent upon and partly the maker |
of the other. If a man makes his
farm as it ought to he made, it will
do much in return to make him—
that is, if he cultivates it intelligently,
thinks, reasons, experiments as
Incomes a rational heinjr; improves
his soil, his slock, liis grain, his fruit;
learns the nature and hahits of the
tilings lie cultivates; knows why lie
does everything—such attention to
his farm will remodel the man and
cultivate him as much as it does the
farm.
When a man studies law and prac
tises it intelligently, the profession
will give strength, culture, force, and
power of will to the man that i*,
iiis profession will make him—make
him a man of larger stamp than he
would have been without the study
and ck*rgy pm into it. 'Hie study
and practice of medicine makes the
divine. In each of the profens’ous
men are made hv thorn, because they
each roijuiyo study in their acquire
ment and intelligence in their prac
tice Our great men are chiefly fiom
the learned professions in* they are
called and it i.< so simply because
they iit’o .chi ht»d pi olr A-iOfiß, I lie?
require a great deal of mental labor
and research; they exercise the mind;
they stretch the muscles; tjicy harden
the sinewa ; tliev solidify the hones.
The professions do much toward mak-.
ing the great men that are found in
them.
So il should lie with the farming
profession. The Com should make
men—great men—as well as tlie bar
ami the desk; and it will if it is re
garded an 1 treated in the same wav.
Let our young farmers he intelligent-
Iv prepared for their duties. Let
then? study their profession; read the
authors on scientific farming, on ag
ricultural chemistry, on iLu earth,
the soil, stock, fruits, grains, vegeta
bles, and then on the practice of
farming; and when they are thus well
prepared, let them continue their re
searches in all their practical opera
tions, and the faim would soon turn
■ oirt more great men than any other
one place of liuiTThh eterlion. When
as much intelligence is excerc'sed on
the farm as in the other professions,
it will produce as many great men as
the same intelligence will, exercised
iu any other wav The lawyer, doc
tor and divine have each their libra
ry—where is the fanner’s? Those
farmers who have good agricultural
libraries are among our best mon.
Lot the farmer make Ids farm in tho
light of the best intelligence that
telates to (h* subject, and bis mrm
will make him a man of the tirst
stamp.
Ashes voa Sweet Potatoes. —A
