FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
A itenii'dy for Cut-Worms
and Wire-Worms.
von versing with an old farmer
#i few years ago on this subject,
lie told me that he was in the
habit of soaking his seed corn in
strong brine—meat pickle would
answer—and that corn thus treat
cd was never injured by worms.
I think he said he soaked his seed
in the pickle about twenty-four
hours. 1 expressed some uppre
(tension that steeping corn in
brine would injure the germinat
ing piinctple, but he assured me
that stick was not the case, as it
all came up well. He said he
once farmed a place to the shares,
and intended pursuing this plan
with bis seed corn, but his land
lord objected, thinking it would
ruin the seed *, he, however, after
much persuasion, consented that a
portion of it should he thus treat
ed, and the result was the coin
from the pickled seed came up
well, and prow on undisturbed by
worms, while that from the dry
seed was almost totally destroyed
by them.
I remember of hearing my fa
ther tell once of come peach trees
he once had in his yard, and
which were badly injured by the
borer. I n order to destroy the
worms, he poured a quantity ot
fish pickle about the roots. The
trees boro a plentiful crop of
peaches, but the fruit was so
salty as to be unfit for use. It
would appear from this that the
saline particles were taken up in
the circulation of the tree, and
thus disseminated to the fruit, and
this may account for the efficacy
of the salting process in the case
\\ of seed corn, the saline matter
being taken into the plant, and
thus preventing the ravages of
worms— Cor. Practical Farmer.
Grf.en Fodder for Stock in
Wintek. —Very satisfactory testi
mony continues to be adduced to
the preservation of greet, fodder
for winter or spring consumption
by means of earthen trendies. In
the case of maize nothing is to bo
desired. Buried in November, it
is palatable in the following July.
The first point is to sele ct an un
exppsedsite. Open a trench seven
feet wide at the bottom and ten at
the top, having a depth of throe
feet. Throw the dirt on each side.
The length may be twelve feet,
according to the quantity of for
age. A succession of pits is bet
__£er than one of great length. As
the maize is cut, place it in the pit
longitudinally until the mass rises
to the height of six feel above the
surface, sloping in like a roof.
Add salt at the rate of seven to
eleven pounds per ton of maize,
strewing a little in the bottom of
the trench. Each day's cutting to
be closed in tho trench irrespec
tive of rain, filling up the fissures
every day as the heap settles down
with great care. Cattle relish this
preserved food, the salt sharpening
their appetites and facilitating
digestion. A new process of pre
serving the leaves and tops of
beets, is that of steeping them in
chloric aciii diluted in water —for
a bath sufficient to dip a ton ot
leave*—which are to be pluced in
a basket and then let into the
tank, thirty pounds of acid, cost
ing one sous per pound, are
enough. The drained mass is
then transferred to the pit. The
Belgians appear to favor this plan,
as the mixture tolls favorably on
ntilch cows.— California Fanner.
CiiAtm Hands. — Tho ea siest
ai d simplest remedy for .chapped
hands is found in eve ry store room.
Take common starch and grind it
with a knife until it is reduced to
common powder. Take a clean
tin box and fill it with starch thus
prepared, so as to have it continu
ally at hand for use. Then, every
time that the hands are washed,
rinse them thoroughly in clear
water, wipe them, and while they
are yet damp, rub a pinch of the
starch thoroughly over them, cov
ering the whole surface. The es
feet is magical. The rough smart
ing skin is cooled, soothed and
healed, bringing and insuring the
greatest degroe of comfort and
freedom from this by no means
insiguificaut trial.— index.
Scalloped Oyster*. —Scald the
oysters in their own liquor; take
them out with :i fork, lay in a deep
dish, sprinkling cracker crumbs,
pepper and salt; and small pieces
of butter : mix a little butter and
Hour together, and stir into the
liquor; then fill up the dish with
it and brown it in the oven.
'I his last is one of the best rec
ipes for cooking oysters, and
makes a delicious dish.
Dread Pronno.—Take two eggs,
two tablespoonsful of sugar, one
pint of milk, one pint of light
bread soaked in milk or water
until soft, beat the ingredients
thoroughly, and lake sufficiently
to turn the milk and eggs to
custard.
The wooi crop of Michigan for
