farm and household.
Sheep on u Poor Farm.
Rome farmers of our acquaint
ance. feel an antipathy to sheep
for the reason that they‘"bite close.
We consider this their chief re
commendation. They can only
bite close where the pasture is
short, and the pasture is short
only on a poor fann. A poor farm
will necessarily be encumbered
with briers, weeds and brush in
the fence corners Under such
condition, we would say to a farm
er who has S2O or upwards in cash
(or credit for it, and then let him
borrow the amount if he has to
pay one per cent a month for the
use of it,) invest it in ewes, not
older than three years, as you can
pvt for that money, l’ut them
this summer in such a field as wo
have described and give them in
addition to what they can pick
np, a pint of wheat bran and oat.
meal daily, with free access to
water and salt. They will first
“go for” the briers and clean them j
out; every portion of that field
will be trodden over and over
again, and the weeds will have* no
chance. Fold them on that field
during winter, and carry to them
feed sufficient to keep them thriv
ing. Get the use of a good buck
in season—South Down would be
preferable—and in the spring if
you have luck (that means if you
give them proper attention and
feed regularly) you will raise more
lambs than you have ewes. The
money will he more than doubled,
and the wool and money will pay
iiy their feed and interest. In the
spring you may put that field in
corn, with the certainty of getting
fifty per cent increase of crop.—
Maine Farmer.
Si.kf.p. —A sufficient amount of
{food refreshing sleep is just as
necessary to the health of the
body, as proper food and sunlight.
No one can do without it; indeed,
he cannot do at all, for one looses
his sleep, he loses his strength and
power of endurance with it. It is
sleep that strengthens our bodies
and repairs the waste of our tis
sues. Every movement we make
during the day-—every thought,
every action —is attended with a
loss of substance. Like a mill
running by steam or by water
every hour's work uses up a cer
tain amount of motive power.
Timing the night, while we sleep,
this is all replaced, and we awake
feeling lefreshed and now, and
ready for action again. No mat
ter how hard a person works, if
he only gets a sufficient amount
of sleep, lie will thrive and do
well, if he does not get sleep
enough, no matter how little he
works, he will always feel tired
and uncomfortable. Sleep is the
great restorer, the great invigora
tor. It is poor economy to steal
an hour from refreshing sleep,
with the expectation of making a
paying thing of it.
The Woolen Factors Enter
frisk. — A substantial citizen of
McMinn, who lives a few miles
from town, called at the printing
office last week to inquire about
ihe precise status of the projected
Woolen Factory enterprise at this
place, to which we have inciden
tally referred once or twice before,
lie talked about it like a man of
sense, and said if those who have
the matter in charge mean business
lie will take a liberal amount of
stock. Wc are confident from the
expressions we have heard on the
subject, that the stock necessary
to place the enterprise on a suc
cessful basis can be raised with
very little effort, which will be
demonstiated as soon as some
thing real and tangible in regard
to it is made manifest.— Athens

Croup. —This is the season for
croup—a disease that requires im
mediate relief, and one that often
proves fatal where miles have to
be traveled for a physician, as in
the country. The following very
simple recipe is recommended by
the Philideiphia Star, and in local
ities where physicians are not at
hand-it wold be well to bear it in
mind :
Take the white of an egg, stir
it thoroughly in a s uall quantity
of sweetened water, and give it
in repeated doses until a cure is
effected. If one egg is not sufli
eient, a second, or even a third
one should be used.
To Keep Flies off Horses. —
Peter Gilbert writes to the Rural
New Yorker:
Flies have been so bad on my
horses that I found it almost im
possible to work them. 1 took
smart weed and soaked it in wa
ter, and in the morning applied it
to the horse with a sponge, all
over them, and found the horse to
work along without any further
trouble, llies not annoying them in
the least.
-
Plantation Johnny Cake —To
one pint of corn meal add half a
enp of sugar, three eggs, a table
spoonful <»f butter, a tablespoon
ful of baking powder, and enough
milk to make a stiff batter. Grease
your pan well, and pour the bat
ter into it. Bake thoroughly.
