Hints on Stock Breeding.
Mr. Editor on i>r e perfectly
right in yotii remaiks in \our Febtu
ary number on tlie improvement of
stock in regard to die exclusion of
grade bulls, etc. To produce im
proved stock with certainty, the male
must be pure bred. But should have
gone one step further. You should
have recommended the use of heifers,
native if you will, in the commence
ment of the improvement. If cows
are used which have previously had
calves l»y grade or scrub bulls, even
though you employ a thoroughbred
bull, there is a strong probability
that the progeny will partake of the
characteiistics of the sires of the first
calves. There is abundant evidence
on record to prove this fact. The
phenomenon may not he satisfactorily
explained, but it exists beyond a
question, and,' therefore, should not
be disregarded in the inauguration
of an improvement from which we
expect to derive so much benefit, and
which is going to cost us much time,
money and attention.
I will cite from memory one of the
most noted instances that I have ob
served in proof of my position. An
almost pure-bred Arabian mare, be
longing to a Scotch nobleman, was
by accident covered by an African
wild ass, called a</ tagga l which in
its marks and color resembled a ze
bra. The colt was a hybrid, strongly
resembling the quagga in shape and
marks. Two years after, and in
each of two successive years, she had
foals by a pure bred Arabian, all of
which had unmistakable marks of
the quagga.
In the history of the English turf
there are several well-known cases
w here tho characteristics of the sire
of the first foal were ideally visible
in the loals of the same mare bv dif
ferent stallions.
The same is true of cattle and
sheep. Therefore, if we want to im
prove our stock and obtain all the
advantages of a tlioioughbred male,
wo must breed from females which
have not been tainted by breeding
from scrubs or grades. 11.

Cotton Seed.
This article is rapidly becoming
one of very great commercial impor
tance in this market. Within a few
years many factories have been star
ted in this vicinity to manufacture
the cotton seed oil, which is used for
a variety of purposes, such ns dres
sing hemp, adulterating sweet and
castor oils, and very largely in the
manufacture of soap of the finest
El—The business of manufactur
ing this oil has been very dull for
some time past, as the supply has
considerably exceeded the demand,
and many of the small factories in
this city have been oblige ! to close
and vva l for better times. The com
petition in the business is very great,
and some of the factories employ
buyers, who travel all through the
Southern States buying up all the
seed obtainable, and shipping it here.
After the oil is expressed from the
seed, the cake is used for feeding cat
Ue and swine, for which it is very
well adapted. Lately a new demand
has sprung up for the seed for export
to the Southern parts of Asia and
Europe. One shipment of forty-five
tons was made to Smyrna, intended
for planting, as the American seed
produces a much longer staple than
any growth in the East. The export
of cotton seed is not a new enterprise
—it was tiied some years ago by
sending a large quantity to India,
but the shipment did not amount to
anything, as the seed spoiled before
it arrived out. Now that a shorter
route has been opened, via the Suez
Canal, it may turn out better.— New
York Economist,
Farm Gates.
Gate posts should not be over four
and a half feet high above ground,
in my opinion, and at the same time
should bo plain, unless the place is
decorated to quite an extent. By
having the gate posts of the bight
above-mentioned, they will be found
more convenient to drive through
with a load of hay or unthrashed
grain. I would advise setting the
gate posts ten feet apart, ami also,
that the gate be as light as possible,
iu order not to have it sag or break
down. The following is a good
plan to make a strong gate at a
small expeuse of time and money :
Select six pieces of stuff, ten feet
long, lour inches w ide, and one inch
thick; these should he laid down on
a level on the ground, leaving the
first bottom space two and three
quarter inches wide, the next three
and a half inches wide; take the
saino kind of material and nail across
the ends, nail on a cross brace from
the upper to lower corner, so that it
will fit inside the end pieces. Then
turn the gate over, nail similar up
right pieces across the ends, even
with the ones on the opposite side;
and one upright piece midway be
tween the ends. A gate made in
this manner, looks well, is quickly
made, and, as far as my experience
goes, answers every purpose.— Ex.

Sugar Beets for Faitinino
Swine.— Jonathan Tafeott gives a
statement in the Boston Cultivator
of an experiment performed on a
Suffolk pig w here sugar beets were
largely employed for fattening. The
animal was about a year old, and the
feeding on boiled sugar beets, tops
and root, began on the 16lli of Au
gust, and wa3 continued three times
a day until the L-*t of October, after
which ground feed was given, consi-t
--ing of two parts of corn and one of
oats, three times a day until the ani
mal was slaughtered, the meal being
mixed with cold water. The result
was, on the ICtli of August, when
ihe sugar beet feeding was begun,
that the weight was 300 pounds;
September Ist, 300 pounds ; October
Ist 4f»o pounds; November Ist, 520
pounds. This is the substance of the
statement given, by which we per
ceive that the increase the last of
August, when fed on boiled sugar
beets, was at the rale of two pounds
per day ; the same rate of increase on
the same food continued through
September. When fed on ground
corn and oats, made into cold slop,
the gain for the next fifty days was
less than a pound and a half per day.

Look Oct fur Shit and Hi st. —
Our grain planters must be aware
that s<i heavy rains as have fallen
this year will so affect the soil, the
atmosphere and the germinating
grain, as to prepare the way for
rust and smut in grain to an unu
sual degree; and, therefore, all
the means in their power should be
used to ward off danger in due
season.
There are some lands that are
low, and standing water will re
main on them a long time, even af
ter the grain is up. All such stand
ing water should be drawn off,
if it. is possible; and where land
is about to be planted that is still
wet before planting, a dressing of
slacked lime will serve a grand
purpose: it will warm the soil,
help todiy it, and kill parasites.—

A New Cure for Rheumatism.—
An exchange prescribes the follow ing
cure for rheumatism:
“Boil a pot full of Irish potatoes,
and bathe the part affected with the
water in which the potatoes were
boiled as hot as can be applied, im
mediately before going to bed. The
pains will l>o removed, or at least
relieved, by the next morning. Some
of the most obstinate rheumatic
pains have lately been cured hy one
application of this novel and simple
remedy.
The Charlotte Bulletin says:
“This we can vouch for ourselves;
that a raw Irish potatoe, carried in
the pocket, will cure rheumatism.
We can point to over twenty indi
vidual cases; some in this city, laugh
as any one may.

Messrs. Pembreton, Taylor <£• Co.:
Gents. —Being desirous of celebra
ting. in some way, this memorable day. I
do not believe I can do a better deed
than to give you the following justly mer
ited, but unsolicited, certificate: For
eighteen years ny wife has been troubled
with a cough, so bad at times that she
has been compelled to spend the night in
a chair. This sping the cough was more
severe than usual, so much so that phy
sicians and the neighbors decided that she
was in the last stage of consumption. I
happened to notice your advertisement of
the Globe Flower Cough Syrup, pro
cured a bottle, my wife took it as di
rected, and to day we have the indescri
bable pleasure of saying that she is
entirely well, and that from the nse of
only one bottle. With my best wishes
for your success, and hoping that all
similar sufferers will give your Globe
Flower Cough Syrup a trial.
I am, very gratefully yours,
jan 3- B .N H arris.
