FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
From ‘.he Southern farm and Home.
Green M amirs.
Mn. Editor —The Southern plan
ters cannot afford to buy the artificial
manures for their land in sufficient
quantity to do them any peimanent
good. They may be able to apply
enough per acre to tickle the land into
producing an increased yield of cot
ton, and if they could be share of
receiving from twenty to twenty five
cents per pound for cotton, might
find a little temporary profit in the
oppeialion. But as to renovating the
land, restoring its fertility,giving back
the land what the crop lakes tioin it,
the fertilisers do not do this. In
deed, I am satisfied in my own mind
that if land which has been slimnh*
ted yeai after year by the application
of Peruvian guano, and which by
the use of this stimulant has produced
good crops, were planted now with
out the application of any fertilizer,
it would be found lobe less fertile
than when the guano was first ap
rlied. Therefore, if lam tight—and
think I am—we must look else
wheie for an efficient renovator of
our worn lands. Fertilizers will not
doit. In the quantities which we
can afford to apply, they ate but a
temporary expedient, leaving the last
state of the land worse than the
first. If we could afford to put from
1000 to 1500 lbs. of pure ground
taw bone upon every acre of our cul
tivated law! we could benefit it
permanently. But we cannot spend
from S3O to S4O per acre for manure.
Neither can we, so long as cotton
continues to be our main crop, keep
and feed a sufficient number of stock
on our places to supply a sufficient
quantity of our stable manure to im
prove our laud materially in the sense
of renovating it. We may do a
great deal more than we do, but do
our best and we cannot do enough.
There is no way open to ns which
is within bur means and compatible
with our productions which will per
manently improve our farms hut
green manuring. This is within our
Beach. It cost but little and it is
effectual. Indeed I am fully per
suaded is better than any artificial
manure. The growing plants bring
up from tho subsoil so far as their
roots have penetrated substances
which promote their growth, and
they hold these sub-tune,es in their
steins and leaves. When they are
plowed under in a green state they
give to the surface tho supplies
of plant food thus brought up from
below, and in addition, they give to
it all the elements which they have
drawn from tho atmosphere, making
it richer in organic matter than
it was before, and thus, of course, in
creasing its fertility. Blowing under
vegetable grow th in its green state is
preferable to the application of stable
manure, because all the organic and
inorganic matter is saved—nothing
is lost by decay from exposure to the
air. There is no perceptible limit to
the enriching power of green manur
ing if continually repeated, and the
process is especially suited to our
worn lands, the vegetable matter of
which lias been entirely exhausted
by the barbarous skinning which has
been pi noticed for many years, and
has been called cultivation. Vegeta
Lie matter is what they lack most,
aad this is exactly what manuring
gives them. Of all green manures
clover is tho best, because it not on.
ly enriches the soil by contributing
to it what its roots have drawn from
beneath and its leaves have drawn
above, but it acts mechanically as a
subsoiler, loosening and aerating the
soil. The next best in my judge
ment, is the common cow-pea, sown
broad east and very thickly—about
two bushels to the acre.
Instead of pasturing our grain
fields after the grain is cut, which is
direct injury to the land by tramp
ing and robbing it of all protec
tion against the broiling sun, and
which therefore, execrable farm
ing, let us immediately after the crop
is cut, sow peas broadcast and plow
them in with tho stubble. In this
iway the land is shaded during
the summer and in the fall a large
supply of tire best mauuie is turned
under, ready for the use of another
grain crop or for a crop of corn or
cotton in the following spring.

What 11 as Been Accomplished. —
Such of our readers as have lived
fifty years may be glad to know
what they accomplished in that time.
According to a French statistician,
the average man has, at that age,
slept 6,000 days, worked 6,500 days,
walked 800 days, amused himself
4,000 days, 6penl 1,500 iu eating, aud
been sick 500 days, lie has eaten
17,000 pounds of bread, 16,000 pounds
of meat, 4,6U0 pounds of vegetables,
fish, etc., and drank 7,000 gallons of
liquids. There are 18,250 days in
half a century, and from the above
statement it would seem that a man
slept just one-third of the time.
To Destroy Insects on Plants.—
Very weak phosphoric acid, say one
ounce of the acid of commerce dis
solved in thirty gallons of water, is
a strong poison for all kinds of insects,
and yet helps plants, by adding to
the soluble phosphates in the soil,
and can do no harm.
To Kemov* I’koib Flesh.— Pul
verise loaf sugar very tine, and apply
it to the part afflicted. This is a new
and easy remotlj, and is said to re
mote it entirely without pain.
To the Girls. —We have lately
seen it stated that in one town, four
girls were married at the same hour,
about eighteen 'months ago. Two of
them have separated from their hus
bands, and the other two are trying
for divorces. Such things ought to
wake up the girls to a sense of their
danger. Girls talk and laugh about
marriage as though it was a jubilee,
gladsome thing, a rose without a
thorn. And so it is, if it ia all right,
if they go about it like rational be
ings, instead of merry making chil
dren. It is a serious thing to marry.
It is a life business and that of heart
and happiness. Therefore never do
it in haste; never run away to get
married; never marry for wealth, or
standing, or fine person, or manners;
but only for character, for the quali
ties of mind and heart which make
an honorable man. l ake time, think
long and well before you accept any
proposal. Consult your parents, then
your own judgment. Learn all it is
possible for you to learn of your pro
posed husband ; when all doubts are
removed, and not till then, accept him.
Another young English lord has
gone into bankruptcy, owing more
than four millions of dollars.
