FARM AND HOUSEHOLD.
From the Southern Farm and Home.
New V arieties of Seeds.
Mu Editor—l hid as willing as
any man to spend my money, vid
induce dims to spend it for any
thing now which is known to be an
improvement. Unt I have seen
manv a dollar wasted during the
last six years in buying nu»v things
which were nothing but humbugs,
put up expressly to swindle ns far.-
mors, because we do not know much
and wanted to get ahead a little
What money we spent for all the new
varietietics of cotton seed alone!
Five dollars a bushel and heavy
freight foi seed, which was not in
nine-tec n cases of a hundred one bit
better than what we bad at home. 1
know a planter who made as much
clear money one year out of his cot
ton; and not content with that,
bought up all the seed he could at
fifteen to seventeen cents a bushel,
and sold them, no doubt, to the pub
lic as the genuine “improved,” ‘ se
lected,” “prolific,” “shost jonted’
cotton seed. Wo were all crazy,
Nothing but being humbugged good
could cure us.
Then niauy of us went crazy on
Irish potatoes. We would read an
advertisement of some Yankee vari
ety that would mature six weeks ear
ner than anything out beforer “six
potatoes free by mail for $1 50,” and
the post offices could not issue orders
fast enough to remit our money for
these potatoes. If we had kept on we
would have found ourselves remit
ting otir money for iced potatoes
which were so much earlier than any
other that they iuafbred before
planting.
I think wo are pretty well cured;
but I see the swindles advertised
again: the selected, improved, pro
life cotton seeds, staple equal to Sea
Island, the early potatoes, the mam
moth corn, tfco. Let us not allow
ourselves to he fooled any mo r e.
Let us keep our money. We need
it badly. Let us touch none of these
fabulously prolific or early seeds.
Oxe Who avas Bit
From the Southern Cultivator.
Decayed Fruit.
What is the best preventive for
fruit rotting on the trees beforo it
ripens! asks Mr. Sampson Duffejr.
“ The apples and pears about here
are decaying after being gathered,
much more than usual, and the bit
ter rot and summer spotting are
becoming so jiievalent.t hat we got
no protii from our orchards. What
can be the causes* and is tliete a
remedy? A. S., both in January
Number.
Messrs. Ebitors, I ho not propose
to answer these questions; an affirm
ative answer would insure much
of this world s treasure, and immor
tal fame. Mv object "ill be to sug
gest to these gentlemen and to all
interested in horticulture, to erjeeri
merit closely. In my neighborhood,
some have arrested the spread of
the rot in the peaches, by care
fully picking from the trees, any
affected, and also gatliciing all fallen
fruit and carrying off, where no hogs
are kept in the orchards. The rot
in peaches, just before r’pening
caused heavy loas—occurring in July,
just after a “wet speli”—and was
doubtless caused bv fungi.
Some varieiiis suffered more than
others, and this is my suggestion, that
certain varieties lor certain localities
prove hardier, and more capable
of resisting attacks of disease and
by close observation, the same sea
sons, in different locations, truth may
be arrived at, not in any other way.
Of peaches, the Tillotsou and Ilales
Easly, and the Crawfords, fare worst
with us. Of apples, tlio Fed Astra
chan and Kawie's Januet this last
season.
Tell Mr. liebert Cleland, subsoil
ing the bill sides with us, is almost a
complete preventive from washing—
absorbing the water, instead of wash
ing the surface. E. 11., Jr.
The following receipt for making
soap is said to he a good one:
To make fifty pounds: Six gallons
of water, three pounds of opodeldoc
soap shared fine, one pound of sal
soda, four table spoonsful spirits of
turpentine, four table-spoonsful of the
spirits of hartshorn. Boil together
about ten minutes, or until all the
ingredients are dissolved. When
cool, the swap is ready for use. Hub
the clothes well with it. Let them
soak half an hour in warm water,
then wash them as with any other
kind of soap. The clothes need
uerer be boiled.
Old Maid’s Cake.—A pound of
flour, half a pound of sugar, a quar
ter of a pound of butter or lard, four
wine-glasses of bloom raisins, a quar
ter of a pound of currants, the same
of candied orange peel, a quarter of
nut meg, two teaspoons of ground
ginger, one of cinnamon, and one of
carbonate of soda. Mix well togeth
er and bake slowly for about two
hours.
German Muffin*. —Mix a quart
of wheal flour w ith a pint and a half
of milk, a little warn*; half teacup of
veast, two eggs well beaten, a tea
spoonful of salt, and two tablespoous
of melted butter. Set the batter in a
warm place to rise, and, when it has
risen, butter your muffin cups, aud
bake quickly.
Hen Manure, Aliiks, and Fai.t.
—John) Jones, in the Rural New

zer, and one in reach of every farmer,
especially adapted to garden culture,
ns well as for top diessiug and field
culture, is hen tnanuie, ashes, plaster,
and salt, mixed in equal quantities,
excepting the salt, of which one
fourth wid be sufficient. Mix in
timately, or broad-cast. It gives
good results upon all soils end crops.
I keep usually e.bont twenty-five bens;
these roost at a certain place the
year round Beneath the roost is a
light plank floor. The annual pro
duce of droppings is six barrels of the
pure thing 'Hits is mixed with the
of ashes and plaster, and gives eigb
tesn barrel*; the salt.brings it up to
twenty barrels of choice fertilizing
campost, equal to much of the super
phosphate of Commercial manure
firms, and worth far more than the
manure of two cows.
Cure for Earache.—l’ut a little
black pepper in some cotton, dip in
sweet oil and insert in the ear. This
is one of tb ? quickest reinidies known.
