At the time we go to press lb*
case of Pierce aduo’r, ys Hander*
sov. is on trial.
There lntt* been a very heavy
wheat crop put in this fall and it
is looking remarkably fine. Some
of our farmers are predicting a
failure in the crop. They say we
never saw a good prospect in the I
fall turn out well in the spring. A
great many people always look p*j
the dark side of the picture, and
are therefore prophets of woe. If
the sun shines t > day iheir pleas
ure is maned by tli6 fear that it
be oloudy to morrow.
The truth is that since eur peo
ple have caught the cotton craze,
thev have had no time to sow
whea' in the fall and it has gener- j
ally been put in between two
freezes and would uot hide a rab
bit before the first of March. And
the result has been th it it was so
late the rust generally harvested
the crop and saved the iarmers
that trouble. . I

Tie adjourned meeting of the
Convention of Stockholders of the
Lawrence villi r< ad which was »p
pointed to hi h*ld on the fitk.,
vas postp >ned on account of die
kite to s«,cnr - a quorum, subject
to the call of the President.
It is known that a majori'y of
stock is held by die Richmond A
Danville R R Co, and unless tha
company is represented it s im
possible to dispose i f any buii
ness, 'tyj byelaws requiring a ma
jority of ihe stock to constitute a
quorum.
From a report of die officers
which hud been prepared to he
submitted to the i.'oiivtiitioii die
following exhibit is made of the
business done by the road since
last report. There lias been ship
ped over the lute in pounds as fol
lo vs :
Gen‘l Merchandise 1688,388
Cotton 1732,960
Corn 119.769
Flour 290,000 |
Fer ilizere 1677.960 i
Lumber.... , 579.084
Wood 4.ii,106
Tobacco . 18691
'-alt ... 164.000
Grand total 6,705,720
With this amount of business,
and a very g>od income from pas
sengers die road has failed to cov
er its annual expenses
This is attributed to the fact that j
lhe rates of passengers fare and
f< eight tariff has been reduced by i
lie Commission be'ow what is
actually necessury io cover expen
ses.
It is folly to suppose that a road
ten miles long can he run on the
same schedule of rates that are
charged on a road 100 miles loDg.
The experience of every Railroad
man in die country is ihat the shor
ter the hue die higher rates are
required to cover expenses.
Our people get the benefit of
these cheap rates, and therefore
there is less room to grumble, bu 1
while the public is benetitted the
stockholders are compelled to
shoulder the loss.

In order to build up the sehcol

will require enterprise and ener

draw from but no man, no matter
what his qualifications or endorse
ment, who walks into die school
room and sets down with legs
crossed and arms folded waiting
for somebody -else to organize aed
bui p up the institution will mak
a success of it. There must be
inducements held out, beth by
the teacher and citizens, to bring
in schollars from a distance.
We have only one respectable
school building in the iown and

Co’ton is coming in pretty live
ly this week. Many of Jur farm
ers have held back part of their
crop under the hope that they j
would get better prices later in j
the season, but at 'ast pay day

We had hoped and believed that
ns the crop was short the price
would go upas soot as the rush
