f ail tire ol'.l II Janies
The banking house of John 11.
Janies of Atlanta closed its d. ors
mst Thuisday evening. When
the news of the failures in New
Vork and other Eastern cities reach
ed Atlanta it produced a feeling
ol uueasioneas among depositors,
who had intrusted their money
to the custody of me bank for
safe keeping. There was a gener.
al disposition to withdraw the
money and as a consequence a
steady stream of depositors ap
peared at the counters of the bank
with their certificates. All de.
mands were promptly met on
Wednesday, but ihe run on James
bank had been so heavy that he
fell oe could not stand another
day and Thursday morning the
anxious depositors found his
doors closed and the announce
ment of his failure rapidly swept
along the streets and was curried
to the country by every departing
train.
When it was known that he
was embaressed, other banks offer
ed io assist him with money upon
good collaterals, but he declined
to accept these otlerbs until Le
could look into his affair and see
how much he would need.
On hriday he made an assign
uiem for the benefit of his credi
ors. In this asignnievd he propos
es to faier one class of creditors
to the exclusion of others. This
is the worst feature collected wiib
Lis failure. All of them were his
creditors and it is a little remark.
able that he should seek to give
one an advanage over another. To
prevent this a bill lias been tiled by
some of tho creditors, praying the
court to set aside his assigmtnt
and have theasset's diatribuced ac
cording to law.
Mr. James has uotseen proper
up to this time to make a staff
meut and wnea I e does it is to be
hoped for his on reputation that
tie will clear up this matter and at
least satisfy the public that he
did not seek to do the injustice
indicated above.
AV hile lie lias not made a slate
meat the Constitution of Saturday
furnishes the folowing points :
Mr. James' failure was caused
by unforuuaie speculation. He
now owns 2,4’’0 shears of Mem
phis A Charls'on stock which cost
him 70 cents aud is now compara
tively worthless. He has lost heav
ilv ic other stock specula nous.
//is assets consist of his
Bank block estimated to be worih
$200,000. residence SOO,OOO, and
other property ag great iug iu val
ue 340,000; nis liabilities will
ainouut to $14,0000 regular depiosi
tors and 300,00 citificaies deposi
tors.
Thus ii will be seen if this esti
mate is iu the neigborhotd of
correct that putting his property
at its liigest value lie will only be
able to pay out, but the probubilj
lies are that (he -ales will
fall below the estimate of value.
Mr. James failed about tan
years ago, but auccceucd iu repay
ing business and paid his debts at
par and then restored confidence,
if he pays up again, he may be
able to re-establish his business
but if he fades his credit is goue
and public tonfidence will go with
it.
