It Mas been one month since we
have had sufficient rain to lay the

on ashbank.
Ihe result of the continued
drouth with a scorching sun, has
been to materially injure the coi

are wilting and half grown boles
are dropping off for want of suffi

OUR I’AX
ihe Board of county commis
sioners, met last Thursday to con
solidate the vote of the eleciion
held on Wednesday, for and a
gainst issuing bonds to pay for
the new Court House.
As wi t be seen from the adver
tisement in this issue announcing
the result the people of the coun
ty. at least a large majority of vo
ting, were opposed to issuing
bonds and prefeutd lo be 'axed
to meet the paxm.nts.
T/ie Board there fore proceeded
to levy Ihe tax for this year. As
will be seen the tax for county
purposes will be titiy seven cents
or the hundred dollars. If the
state tax luid remained the same
it was last year, 25 cents on the
4100 the entire tax would have
been 82 cents, but Gov. McDaniel,
by a recent older levied live mills
more, which makts the , state tax
thirty vents. The entire tax will
'litre fore amount to eighty cents
outlie hundred.
Two years ago Lawreiiceville
received the first bale of cotton on
the 20th of August. Not a bale
lias been up to 'bis time
this fall. The farmers are busy
picking however, and the gin men
are getting ready for work.
The colot ed people held a camp
meeting in town last Saturday and
Sunday. There was a general out
pouring from the surrounding
country to attend > Lis meeting.—
There was no disturbance of any

The fence or stock law, as i 1
now stands, leaves the qnes'ion
of fence or no fence where it prop
oily belongs; that is to the people
of the distirct, or of the county at
large,. It is right, democratic and
in harmony with the spirit of free
government, that the majority
shou'd rule upon all question of

tands however needs amendment
in one important par icular and
if elected I shall endeavet to have

In reference to .he retail of

the fence law. the question of n -

In answer to your request of

know that I voted for the local

stock law is a sta ute law, iu be

at the ballot box, xvbic h I tin ok is
a good and fair place to decide
such quesiions. As to the liquor

also at the ballot box. I know of
no fairer way, of deciding all such
questions, which may arise among
the people, than to eosult .hem
