Our County flection
T’he election for Governor,
State H use officers and members
of the Lc lslature passed oft very
quietly la t Wednesday a the va
rious election precircts in the
Coumy There has been a, emark
able change in this respect in a
few years. We can well remem
ber when a general election hardly
ever passed wkhout tights at d
sometimes blood-shed, but better
judgement prevails these days
and men agree to disagree. Per
haps the law prohibiting the sale
of liquor on that day has had a
whoesouie nfluence
There was some drunkness cm
our stree s laie in the day but
not enough to ereaie arv disord
er.
As will V>e seen the vote was a
very small one, not half the legal
voters having exercised their rights
It is estimated that, the County
can upon a full vo.e pole thirty
eight hundred, and on counting
the list of votes returned it >/'jb
accertaioed that „nly 1685. vines
were cast.
M e hardly know how to account
for this small vo e. It is true that
there was no opposi ioti for the
most important offices, but the
race for the Legis'ature was hoily
contested and we supposed would
bring oir a 'olerabiy fair vote.
The ’ndifforence manifested prob
ably arose from the fact tb.it the
people are disheartened by the fi
nancial troubles of the country and
the shortness of crops, while ma
ny were detered upon the mistak
en idea that they were not en itled
to vote unless they had paid their
tax foi this year, and were afraid
of a proseen ion.
