At the end of that time, I got
transfered to the third United
States artillery of the regular ser
vice. Upon the expiration of tny
three years’sot vice I re-enhsted
in the Third artillery, serving in
all eight' en months in the artillery
At the end of that time I got a
furlough and came home to Hud
6 n, I was detained a couple of
Hays longer than my furlough raD
and was afraid to go back to the
army. Very sho.tly afterward—
although by no going back I be
came a deserter—l re-enlisted at
Syraeus in the 100th New York
volunteers. I was at that lime
about twenty one. I served nutil
the assault on Fort Gregg in tli,
Ueninsulsr Campaign in April 18-
65, in which 1 was shot through
the h ud and shoulder, and when
I got out of the ho-ipi id. I was in
no shape to re-eu ei the service.—
Since the war 1 have been living
at Hudsou and lonia, comin » to
De'roit about a year ago.”

“Yen. A wife and two >oung
children; my wife is a pastry cook
at the Sf-tndish House.”
“What was your idea in giving
yourself up to the military author
ities
“I wuD*ed to get my mine deal 1

honorably discharged from my
sec nd service, and didn’t like to

“Had no other means. I con

rounder, about what to do and he
told me to give myself up, and
said that he did nd believe 1
Could be punished in any way. but

to Sucre ary Lincoln and he said
nothing could be done for me
while 1 was a deserter at large.but
I didn’t expec. to be thrown in
the guard house aod treated this
way. Why, it’s a horrible place
to live, and it will ruin my health
if I have to stay there a very great
while. I never was in the guard
house bui once before in my life,
and that was for spilling soup on
an i fficmr, and it goes preity hard
with me.”
“Do you draw a pension ?"
“Yes, for my injuries in my sec
ond service.”
“I expect so hear from the War
Office in a few days in relation to
