This remarkable spell of cool westber we had the past week, we thought the effects of a severe bail storm, near to ns ; but the telegraph tells us of a white frost in Virginia, ami a cor respondent from New Port, Long Island, com plains terribly of the cold, and wants to comp South to get warm ; says that fires and winter clothing were quite common. We apprehend this cool enap, and the ap proaching fodder pulling season, together, will put all the Doctors in molion, and cause quinine and all antidotes to the shaking complaint, to be in great demand. We had the disease once and have never been goodlouking since! so look out young-beaux aud be careful of-jyrur selves. - T RELIGIOUS. The Rev. Robert Flournoy, held a seriasof very interesting meetings, at Parker's Melh odist Church, on Saturday aud Sundiy last, which resulted in many conversions. He was assisted by the Rev. On Friday a meeting at D thart’s Baptist Church, will commence. Quite a number of lPviues will be present, among them that yood man, the Rev. Washington Kilpatrick, and we trust every oue who can, will attend this meet ing. God has remembered us with innoh mercy, blest us with fruitful seasons, preserved us in health, let us praise him for his wonderful works to the children of men. For Ihe Ntu’s Farmer. Messrs Edit’s: I have b emlnuk ing for some time, that 1 would write you of a little affair that we daily see, when we visit the churches, or any place, where ladies meet; it is such a perfect and general obedience in the golden rule, among the oppo-ite .- r 'X, that 1 think it deserves some mid e. Now we all know, that the gulden rule is “Do unto others, as ve would that all men should do unto von ” Now canyon gimss who 1 r<-ler to, asheingio accordance with this rule ? It is the fashionable practice of ladies kissing each other, on any, and every occasion; now, why in the name of all thiits good iiaruied, cant the swi el creatures let us mix a little of the masculine article along with dns le in rle ambrosia ? It seems to me ih.it it would improve the ffivor of both specimens ol 'he arlicle. 1 hope the ladies, especially the young ones, will take this matter under consider ation, and if any ofthem ire disposed toexoerimen' in the nr.nnipulaiiou of the commodity, as per above fin irnffa, will they he kind enough to use the columns of y our paper, to inform MOUSTACHE ? are loafers in our office like shade trees ? EMMA. Evergreen Cottage, Ga. A GOOD STEWARD. The Steward ol the church is not the least important among the officiary, and deserves es pecial attention. He L important for the fol lowing reasons; I. 1 he minister is to a large eateutcontrolled by him. as he is by the Church taw especially designated as the preacher’s ad viser. 2. The preacher is Bet fertile defense and support ot the Church, and the stewa'd is for the defense aud support of the preacher ; hence to a' great, degree the defense aud maintenance of the Church devolves on the .steward. 3. The preacher, his wife and children look absolutely to and depend alone tor their bread on the stew ard. Thus he is the custodian ot the life and happiness not only of the minister, but of his family. Ate these reasons true? Do they exist ? If so who can estimate the importance of the sU w- H'-d as a Church « ftieia! ? It the world must be converted by the preaching of the gospel, who ►hall hcl l up the luinds ot these tainting min isters, while ihey cast the sickle among the ripe and falling grain ? But suppose the steward to say, “I have bus iness engagements and cannot lose time to beg for the preacher,” what is the result? I answer, tho preacher is neglected. He feels it—his family feel it—but none others feel it for a time. For, pressed by his call, and the demands of h d)ing world, he yieldss.owly— reluctantly— tj the pressure of poverty ; and fora while noth ing unusual is observable in him save certain lines of sadness on his face. Next, he does not preach with so much zeal and force; next bis sermons are not so well prepared, becau-u now the terrible truth is gnawing ou his mind, a id undermining his good resolutions, that he is neglected and is left to suffer. Tho pastor’s work abates with bi.szea , an 1 Le locates—ihe pieacher Miff<*rs and the (. lunch sutfeis. r I h • writer once kuew a steward who seemed t y ft el the importance of his position. This cfcour.*.i took time, but the good man was willing tc sacrifice something, and thus be a good steward. He was on his bed—his only son stoid by him. “L e,” said the venerable stew ad to his son, “get a lawyer—l sha'l sjon he gone, aud there is some business \et to do.” Tiie lawyer bad completed the will, and all the secular bus ness is finished. “Now’ j.e , look in my dtawer and find my‘quarterage sack’ —the amount for this quarter is already colled! ed — ake it. to the quarterly conference tube held a ; pay it i to the board of stewards; and tetl the quarterly conference that your father is in heaven, and he desired >ou should be made steward in his place.” The old stew ard immediately so ded his hands on his bieast and w< nt home to God. The promptitude and sacrifice of that sainted *»fce.wa»d has made the heart of many apr her glad, and cleared bis way f»r usefulness.
