By an arrangement with the Trustees of the b'2d Disl., the Academy enters upon the ne.w role of a “free school.” Parents and all othets having chil dren in charge, should bear this fact in mind. The Academy building is largp apd well arrange ; recently the Tiustefishavi; made necessary repairs! although there is not a com plete outfit of sellout furniture ami apparatus, yet there is a, sufficiency for comfort and immediate want. Here the departed sleep in peace freed from the toils and vexations of life! The winds may blow aud the birds sing, but they will know no more 6f earth ’till Gabriel’s trump shatl bid them rise, leave the tombs and mount the skies. onward to the summit of a low ridge, 1 unexpectedly came upon ope ol Eine-lueky's great curiosities, the king of the pine lorest, or to be more explicit, a huge Gopher. Tins o'd resident had reached the verge of the road just in front of me, when discovering Capt- Sprawls he con cluded'to halt and throw himself en "t-irely. upon rdy mercy. I baited aleo, and we eyed each other en tpnidngly for sometime, but few woftAs passed between us. I thought to mysbll, 1 have often heard of the flfard-gheMs’* in this locality, won ifef if this is one of them! I had al so a great curiosity la know to what part of the United States—so-called —he was. emigrating; and the reas ons that induced him to bid farewell To his dative hill and try his fortune in parts unknown. But 1 soon dis covered that we did not speak the same language, and therefore, I could not ascertain whether he was cunning away fom the Ku Klux, or afiiad government managed by rad icals," the father of them, or from poor land, or if he was actuated sim ply l>y n wild spirit of adventure. Bui j>ne thing is true the sight of him' arnused many slumbering thoughts, that a few minutes before, were sleeping profoundly in memo ry’s great tjtadle. I thought of the tinfe when I was a little boy, and was wpnt to ride this wild horse of the sancT hills, ] thought of the time, years gone by, when 1 lived way down Souths in the vicinity of a re gion noted tot gophers. In that sec ; tion.they were esteemed a great del iceey, and to capture one, waste capture a prise. I was credibly in formed that a man might walk en tirety around some premises in the neighborhood upon their shells, with out once selling his foot upon “terra firma.” * 1 well remember that on a beau tiful Sabbath day, I once passed through this gopher reigionlo till an afternoon appointment, having been specially invited to make a speech in advocacy ut Sabblh scools at a cer tain place. The very first house I passed, my attention was arrested by two liugh g iphers who had drove up to the proprietor’s gate snd were trying to get through. They seemed to possess a volun tary spirit of self-sacrifice and were obliging inough to call in lime lor dinner! The next thing that arres ted rny attention in passing thiough this wire-grass region, was a large church built ol hewn lugs, wi li a pulpit reaching up nearly to the tool; just above the sounding hoard 1 discovered the head of a Divine, having the e\e of a binck-siiake, on ly of larger diiuenlions. He was a man of strung Intel.ecl hut very weak inr rals. Just the night pre ceding, 1 e was in his grocery, who I ing, twisting aud winding among his barrels, dealing out ruui to drunk en sots till midnight, who had fe.lt ragged children weeping wives, einptv eiitis and Wive lied morals behind them ! CAPT. SPRAWLS. Advertising.— -There is a class of persons who imagine they are doing judiciously by apyeriising through the medium of circulars. They scatter a lew thousand through the city annomjcing their business, and await the result, fiilty convinc ed that in sn doing they have taken all necessary preliminaries to suc cess. Various circulars are almost daily lo be found on the door steps and entry ways of respectable hous es. Their fate is generally, that they are either thrown into tin streets by the indignant servant girl who answers the bell, or summarily pitched aside by The man of the house who finds them when he re turns, and who desires no suggestions of new methods of lightening his purse. The use of circulars may, in certain limited cases, answer every purpose; but the vast majority of those who have made money by ad vertising have found that the col umns ol a newspaper are the best and surest, and in the end ihe cheap est, medium of cnm.hunicaiion be, tween the business world and the public.
