Manassas, his Wmatns have lain in
the soil of Vtrgitva, on which he
died, until a few days since, when
they were disintered and brought to
ibis place. Rev. Mr. Pope deliver
ed the funeral oration from the text,
“Render unto Ceasnr the things tint

do the subject the ju-tice it merited,
from the fact of not having had time
to prepare his di-course, still it was
impressive and interesting
War, sad devastating war, is o r
and past ; but still ever and anon,
we have our thoughts carried back to
the bloodstained scenes, S.id sweet
memories of the loved and lost, who
have laid down their lives in defence
of what they believed to be the
rtghtsof their dear Southern sunny
home, will hover oer us and give a
tinge of sadness to our most gleeful
hours. Many were the goo I and
great, who willingly faced their
country? foe, and gave up their lives
on the blood stained fi-ld of Manas
sas, in the two memorable battles
which bathed its hills and dales in
fratraridial plood, but ot all who
rendered up their lives on the alter
of freedom, none more brave, more
beloved, or more honored in the
humbled circle in which they ranr>
ed, than Lieut. Robert Jordan,
whose remains now repose in our
village cemetery, beneath the flag
whose stripes and stars he upheld
vvhith his strength, and defended
with his life, and a wreath of spot
less flowers placed over him by the
hands of those who best knew and
appreciated his worth.

The Overland Monthly.— The

teach' tl us, and again we must pio
noiince in its favor, this number
gain ug additional interest by an il

Clifford. The contents are exceed
ingly varied, and v idle carefully re
tabling its characteristic local lea
' nres. both of history and fiction, it
finds room to extend its researches
into foreign lands under appetizing
titles. We notice th n Joaquin Mil
ler, the “new California poet,” who
itas recently obtained such favorable
mention at th" hands of English crit
ics high in authority, contributes a
prose article entitled “On amt About
the Avon;” and Mrs Cooper is ex
lending her well-vvi iteirand instruc

into will-hood. Prentice Mulford
dso puts in an apaearjiice, in a so

[COMMUNICATED.I
Messes. Editors : As it is the
first tune in my life dial 1 ever com
municated with a news-paper, 1
hope you will pardon me this time
for taxing your time and space, with
ttie promise that it shall be the lust;
for I rega-d th.it class of of men
whose highest ambition is to see
their productions in news papers
as possessed of more brass than
brains. Feeling as I do, an inter'
est in every-thitig that appertains to
the interest of our town, I desire to
ask a few questions and make a few
suggestions, which I' hope will be
answered and acted upon, by those
who have better facilities for know
ing these tiling? than I have. In the
first place, I desire to know it we
have a Board ot Commissioners?
and if so, who are they, when and
where do they meet; or do they meet
at all? Have we a marshal! ?if so
who is he? Did the board we bod
at the beginingof this year, collect
any Town t.nx, beside tite whiskey
Tax, ? When dose the Fiscal year
for the town end ? are we not entitled
toil pub'ished statement of the con
dition of the finances belonging to
the town? Is not the old Board
compelled to act until anew one is
elected and installed ? All the above
questions I ask, Messrs. Editors,
simply for the sake af informalron.
Now a few suggestions to those who
have the most to say upon 9uch
matters, and 1 atn 'done, first! I
would suggest that the brick breast
ing in the mouth of the biggutler, be
taken entirely away, lor when i t
rams it is a source ol mtoU rabl: su
ooyartce to Mrs. M one ol our beat t
ana most quiet citizens; I make this
suggestion for the reason that when
it rain* very, very hard, there is but
one other way to get into her house
unless you have time to wait ten or
fifteen minutes utuill the water runs
off. It is to be hoped that no one
will clean out the Herring Pond
ditch, for it will greatly incoovenL
ence the herds of wild horses and
mules, that are stampeediug through
town every day, (greatly to the dis
comfiture of the females and chil
li en, who like to be seen out doors
sometimes) going there to get water,
I would also suggest that the covet
ing over the public well be take
down before it falls and kills some
body. I notice there is a great deal
of work needed on the cross streets
by the old Hotel, but I guess that
might b ■ dispensed with, tor the wu
ter spreading all over the street
keeps tlie weeds and g'a?? down.
Were I so inclined, 1 ti iglit make
other, a.? 1 them, timely suggestions,
but I will close by submitting only
the above. Enquiringly youis,
TAX PAYER.
