_____
LIFE.
O let the soul her sluuibsis break.
Let thought be (quickened, and awake ;
Awake to see
How soon this life is past and gone,
And death comes softly stealing on,
How silently!
j Swiftly our pleasure glide away,
; Our hearts recall the distant day
With many sighs;
The moments that are speeding fust
We heed not, hut the past.—the past,—
Moie highly prize.
Onward its course the present keeps,
Onward the constant current sweeps,
Tiil life is done;
And, did we judge of time aright,
The past aud future iu their night
Would lie as one.
Let no one fondly dream again,
That Hope and all her shadow;, train
Will not decay;
Fleeting as were the dreams of old,
Remembered like a tale that’s til,
They pass away.
Our lives arc livers, gliding free
To that unfat homed, boundless sea,
The silent grave !
Thither all earthly pomp and boast
Roll, to be swallowed up and lost
In one dark wave.
Thither the mighty torrents stray,
Thither the brook pursues its way,
And tinkling rill.
There all are ecjual. Sid-» by side
The poor man and the son of pride
Lie calm and still.
I will not here invoke the throng
Os orators and sous of song,
The deathless few;
Fiction entices and deceives.
And, sprinkled o’er her flagrant leaves,
Lies poisonous dew.
To One ah ii« # my thoughts arise,
The Eternal Truth. —the Good an Wise,—
To Him I cry,
Who shared on earth our comm m lot,
Hut the world comprehended net
His deity.
This w< rid is but the rugged road
Which leads us to the bright abode
Os peace above;
So let us choose that narrow way,
Which leads no traveller’s so it astray
From realms of love.
Our cradle is the starting place,
In life wo run tho onward r ice,
And reach the g. al;
When, in the mansions of the blest,
Death leaves to its eternal rest
The weary soul.
Did we but use it as we ought.,
This wosld would school each wondering
thought
To its high state.
Faith wiugs the soul beyond the sky,
Up to that better world on high,
For which we wait.
Yes,—the glad messenger of love,
To guide us to our home above,
The Saviour came;
Horn amid mortal cares and fears, -
"He suffered in this vale of tears
A death of shame.
Behold of what delusive worth
The bubbles we pursue on earth,
The shapes we chase,
Amid a world of treachery !
They vanish ere death shuts the eye,
Aud leave no trace.
Time steals them from us—chances stra ngr,
Disastrous accidents, and change,
That come to all;
Even in the most exalted state,
Relentless sweeps the stroke ol fate ;
The strongest fall.
Tell me,—the charms that lovers seek
In the clear eye and blushing cheek,
The hues that play
O’er rosy lip aud brow of snow,
When hoary age approaches slow
Ah, where are they ?
The cunning skill, the curious arts,
The glorious strength that youth imparts
In life’s first stage;
Thesejshall become a heavy weight,
When Time swings wide his outward gate
To weary age.
The noble blood ot Gothic name,
Heroes emblazoned high to fame,
In long array;
How, in the outward course of time,
The landmarks of that race sublime
Were swept away!
Some, the degrade slaves of Inst,
Prostrate and trampled iu the dust,
Shall rise no more ;
Others,by guilt and crime, maintain,
The scutcheon, that, without a stain,
Their fathers bore.
Wealth and the high estate of pride,
With what untimely speed they glide,
How soon depart!
Bid not the shadowy phantoms stay,
The vassals of a mistress they,
Os fickle heart
These gilts in Fortune's hands are found,
Her swift revolving wheel turns round,
And they are gone
No rest the inconstant goddess knows,
But changing, aud without repose,
Still hurries on.
Even could the'lmnd of avarice s.-.vo
Its gilded baubles, till the grave
Reclaimed its prey,
Let none on such poor hopes rely;
Life, like an empty dream, flits sy,
And where are they ?
Earthly desires and tensual Inst
Are passions springing from the dust—
They fade and die ;
But, in the life beyond the tomb,
They seal tho immortal spirit's doom
Eternally I
No. 35.
I The pleasures and delights, which maak

| What are they, all,
i Hut the fleet cooisers of the chase,

Wherein we fall t
No foe, no dangerous pass, we heed,
Brook no delay,— but onward speed
With loosened rein;
Ami, when the fatal snate is near.

But strive in vain.

And fashion with a canning art
The human face.

A Mice Little Story. —As plwuw
tid a story as was ever told is
ibis, regarding an Albany, (N. TANARUS.)
physician, by a correspondent of lbs
i’tiii Jellerson Independent Press,
•a i i:ing from New Haven:
“An aged widow in Massachu
sells received a telegram that her
only son was dying in Lawrence,
Kansas. Notwithstanding her ex
treme age and feeble health she must
sec her son. She undertook the
i itirncy. The train was delayed.
When it arrived at Utica she was
taken violently ill. A young physi
cian assisted iter to a hotel, and pro
vided even thing he could t or her
conduit. Her detention by sickness
and moderate means would not al
-1 >\v In r to pursue her journey, hat
lor the kindness ot the attending
stranger. He paid her hills, assist
ed In r to the cars, and accompanied
her lo Buffalo.
At parting she requested bis ad
dress. Two months later this stran
ger was sealed in his office at Alba
ny. A stranger entered, and, after
some conversation, presented the
doctor with a Government bond for
SSOO, as a reward for his kindness
to that old lady, saying: “Shewat
my mother, .She died 8 few days
after reaching tne and 1 recovered.
Had it not been for your kindness
she would have died on the road,
am her son who was sick. I am a
banker; but money can never repay
the debt 1 owe to you for your gen*
erous kindness to my dear, good
mother,. God bless you!’’
May God bless and the world ap
plaud such -noble acts ol benevo
lence as L>r. T. D. Crotheri, of Al
bany, bestowed on this occasion,
and which this old lady’s son M
richly rewarded.
Curious Custom. — The causes
for which a Mahometan woman may
demand a divorce are clearly and
broadly laid down in the Koran, and
her evidence is sufficient, because
the Mahometan law supposes that a
woman must be violently aggrieved
before the modesty of her sex will
allow het lo appear in public with
such application. So careful is this
law to spare her feelings, that aha if
not even required to recount ber in
juries, unless of her own free will;
all she has lo do is place ber slipper
reversed— dial is, with the sola up
ward—lnf ire the cadi, and tba case
is finished ; the divorce is granted
without further Inquiry.
Low Spirits. — Exercise for the
body, occupation for the mind, these
are the grand constituents ot health
and happiness, the cardinal points
upon which everything turns. Mo
tion seems to be a great preserving
principle of nature, to which even
inanimate things are subject; for the
winds, waves, the earth itself sre
restless, and the waving of trees,
shrubs and flowers is known to be
an essential part of their economy.
A fixed rule of taking several home*
exercise every' day, if possible, in
the open air, if not tinder cover, wilt
be almost certain to secure one as
emption from disease, as well as
from attach of low spirits, or «wmn>—
that monslet who is ever waylaying
the rich and indolent. Low spirits
cannot exist in the stmosphere of
bodily and mental activity.
Among the remarks Judge Kant
made at the recent term of Court at
Belfast, Me., he said lhal“tbf aboaa
inublc practice of wearing hair on
ihe upper lip, is reprehensible."
Whereupon the Belfast Journal Re
marks that “there are a great many
l adies who agree with the learned
•fudge, and set their faces against
them constantly."
