Jn tliis issue will'be found the ad
vertisement of Mr. G. H. Harrell,
who is prepared to do all kinds of
wood work, man it future and repair
Buggies, Wagons &c. He is making
new additions to his facilities for dis
patching work, and guarantees every
thing turned out of his shop to be
done in the neatest and most durable
m inner. Being alive to the iterest
of the dairy man, he has secured the
right to manufacture and sell, in this
county, the celebrated “Morehouse
Churn,” which is truly a great and
valuable invention. It will make
huttei in from four to ten minutes,
and every body who has churning to
do should have one of these churns.
It, has been tried by some of the la
dies of the town and we believe it
gives perfect, satisfaction. Read his
twlverUs-unent.
Fisu.—We noticed in town on
Tuesday last, quite a large quantity
of fish; suckers, trout, red horse
and perch, caught .by Mess.j Shivers,
Coleman and Peel. We are inform
ed that these three gentlemen caught,
in three days fishing, over seven hun
dred pounds of fish, nearly an aver
age of two hundred and fifty pounds
per day. Their fishing grounds are
at, and near Simons’ mill—better
known as “old town”—about nine
miles below Louisville. This puts us
in a humor for fishing, and we would
suggest that by way of having a lit
tle pleasure for ourselves, in catch
ing, we make up a party and give
the “scaley tribe ’ a round or two.
Nothing would please us better than
to 1m; one of a party of this kind, and
we think there are others in the
same fix.

Our Bethany correspondent reports
all quiet in that section save occa
sional skirmishing, produced by ex
cessive iutimaey with the sharp
shooters from Col. Brandy’s head
quarters. Cupid has been manoevre
ing in that direction and some of the
fair battlers in love report the loss
of one of the most vital and passion
ate members of the body. We
should suppose that in this instance
the loss on botli sides be equal, and
an exchange of prisoners would be
unpleasant to both parties. The
Lodge of Good Tenjplers is flourish
ing, and they have applications at
every meeting for membership. They
have our best wishes, and we trust
that ere long they may succeed in
bringing into their order and protec
tion the few present strivers with
rum in that locality, and let them
once enjoy the pleasure there is in
drinking the pure and sparkling wa
ter alone.
The Board of commissioners met
in regular monthly meeting on Mon
day, night last. Present, Chairman,
J. <j. Cain, Commissioners, Denny,

Committee in place of Com’r Polliill,
temporarily appointed to fill vacancy
of Coin’r Wilkins resigned.
The Street Committee received in
structions to close up the present
outlet tor water from the public
street, and run a ditch beyond the
News & Farmer office to the reserv
ed section for that purpose. This is
a work much needed, and we are
glad to see the Board- taking action
in the matter. Tlw? question of sew
ering the street was brought before
the meeting and discussed, and it was
agreed that letters of inquiry - be made
to ascertain the actual cost of the
work am! material for same.
This would be another great addi
tion to the. improvement of our streets;
■ and we should feel no, less gratified to
know that the funds in the treasury
were sufficient to authorize the com
mencement and completion of the
work at an early date. The consid
ering of the General Tax Ordinance
was re-postponed to a call meeting of
the Chairman.’ Committee on Spec
ial Tax Ordinance being unable to
'make a report were granted further
time. Report of the Treasurer for
the month of March was received and
accepted. Board adjourned.
A remarkable story comes from
Bombay,which suggests the proprie
ty of employing monkeys as police
detectives. A Madras man making
a journey took with him some money
and 1 jewels, and apH monkey. He
was waylaid, robbed,, murdered and
buried by a parry of assassins. The
monkey witnessed the whole affair
from a tree top, and as soon as the
villians had departed lie went to the
nearest police officer’s station, attract
ed his attention by his sighs and
groans, and finally led him to the
grave of hat master. lie then ena
bled the officer to recover the stolen
property from the place where it had
been concealed, and then went to
I the bazaar and picked out the mur
derers one by one, holding theta last
by the leg until secured. They have
confessed the crime, and are held for
trial.
A Student m the Edinburg Uni
versity, who was fined a guinea for
disturbing his class-,,last week, paid
the greater part of it in halfpence,
about a quarter of a hour being
occupied in counting over the amount.
This singular mode of “serving out”
the professor who iuJlictcd the fine
was carried’out amidst the laughter
of the class, by whom the amount
had been subscribed.
A good instance of'sharp practice
is that of a man in Ohio, who was
acquitted of murder on a plea of in
sanity. He had secured ids lawyers
by giving them a mortgage on his
farm, but now repudiates the mort
gage, on the ground that he was;in
sane when lie made it according to
the showing.of these same lawyers.

A clergyman once preached a ve

“Thou art weighed in the balance

After the congregation had listen

“That is right, gentlemen, as fast

No one else passed out.
