Caution to Planters.
It seems that planters can sell to
bacco to their employees without
making themselves liable for a deals
Special tax, but it is discretiona
ry with the local revenue collector
to decide if the planter sells manti
factored tobacco to his employees
“with a view to gain or profit' to
himself.” Should the Luter be
proven the tax will be collected as
usual.
Over Five Thousand Bales.
From the first of September last,
to the first of the present month
Over five thousand bales of cotton
hive been sold in the Louisville
market. This is in excess of about
two thousand bales more than was
sold here fast S' ason, and three years
ago Louisville did not buy any cot
ton at all that was nut already bar
fained for by previous contract.—

era have paid prices ranging within
or.e cent of the Savannah market,
making it much "more profiiable to
all who sold their cotton here rather
than ship it to t reign markets.

OBITUARY.
Nicholas B. Gary was born March 11th,
1797, and died at bis residence in Jeffe.son
county, Ga , May 31st, 1874. Yesterday loving
hands laid his body down in a spot chosen by
himself- For twenty-five years he had been a
member of the M. E. Church South. He died
as had lived—in peace with God and man. He
had prayed for an easy, quiet, painless death,,
aad God, in mercy, heard. He closed his eyes
and fell as|eep without a straggle or a groan.
“ Mark the perfect man, and behold the up*
right: for the end of that man is'peace.”

Happy are the faithful dead !
In the Lord who sweetly die,
They from all their toils are freed.

The Tax Bo iks of Jefferson County are now open, and in order that ev
ery Tax Payer may know my regulur rounds for receiving the Taxes of
Jefferson County, I publish them all together, so that theie can be no
excuse that the public are not duly and well informed as to my appoint
menis, and none need have excuses for not making their return promptly.
In addition 10 the regular Returns made, each Tax pater is required to
.nake a statement on oath of the number ot acres, as near as practicable,
he or she has planted in each of the farm crops. Also the number ot
Horses, Mules, Cows, Hogs, Sheep, and Dogs.
